Peshtigo Whips Wausaukee, Takes Perfect Mark Into Break

The one-two punch of juniors Jordan Berth and Zack Neumann continue to shine on the M-O Conference hardwood courts in leading Peshtigo (8-0, 5-0) to a 62-47 win over Wausaukee Friday. All the pair of talented cagers did was combine for 43 points as the Bulldogs recorded their 41st league win.

Elsewhere in league play, second place Suring leveled Lena 72-35, Niagara held off STAA 64-60 and Gillett kept Coleman winless 48-39.

The 9-team circuit will have off until Thursday, January 3 as leader Peshtigo entertains STAA and Suring will welcome Crivitz.

-Friday’s Results-

Bulldogs Slip

Past Rangers

In a pre-Christmas battle in Wausaukee, the Bulldogs rallied from a first quarter 16-11 deficit to post a 62-47 win. Berth netted a game high 23 points, Neumann 20 with 19 of those coming in the second quarter, Matt Borkovec 8 and AJ Woller 5.

Peshtigo struggled out of the gate as the upset minded Rangers rolled to a 16-11 first quarter lead. Aaron Schlies lit up the Peshtigo defense for 7 points and Cole Lewandowski 5 as both shooters fired in threes. Borkovec canned a pair of jumpers for Peshtigo, Berth 4 points including a trey while Woller chipped in with 3 points.

Period two is where things turned in Peshtigo’s favor and they can thank their defense and point guard Neumann. The sharp shooting backcourt ace singlehandedly carried the offense with 19 of his 20 points in the frame. Neumann found the mark for five 3’s while adding on a pair of two point buckets as Peshtigo unloaded a 28-10 surge.

Berth added plenty of inside presence with 7 points while Borkovec hit for a bucket.

The best Wausaukee could answer with were 3 point shots from Zach Orlando and Ryan Nystrom as the offense sputtered.

Taking a 39-26 lead into the third quarter, Peshtigo maintained the upper hand with a 14-12 edge. Berth hit for a trio of shots and added two free throws while Borkovec and Logan Noffke collected baskets. Beau DeLaet tallied 7 of Wausaukee’s 12 points in the period.

Over the final 8 minutes both teams scored 9 points as Peshtigo prevailed 62-47. Berth capped his big night with two more baskets.

Suring Starts Fast

To Top Lena 72-35

Racing to a commanding 20-6 first quarter lead, Suring had no trouble improving to 5-1 with a 72-35 rout of Lena. The Eagles were up 31-18 by intermission before pulling away with a 41-17 second half charge.

Still trying to get his shooting touch back following a broken wrist, Cody Christensen sparked the Eagles with 16 points. Christensen scored 6 in the first and third quarters while adding 4 in the fourth.

Blake Strehlow added 12 points, Anthony Jazwiecki 11, Jay Tienor 10 and Dan Sweda 8 points. Tienor dropped in a trio of buckets in the opening frame and Sweda hit for a pair of 3’s, Jazwiecki scored 9 points in the second frame and Strehlow erupted for 10 points in the third quarter.

Roy O’Harrow and Justin Heimke netted 10 points each for Lena while Matt Marquardt chipped in with 7.

Niagara Nudges

Cavaliers 64-60

In a closely contested conference clash at Marinette, Niagara claimed a thrilling 64-60 win.

The Badgers unloaded a 27-20 second quarter surge to pry open a 36-29 lead. Niagara enjoyed leads of 30-20 in the second quarter and 51-40 in period three before the Cavaliers stormed back.

On the strength of three point shots from Jameson Bardowski and Mike Schmidt, STAA closed within 51-48 and the score remained tight the rest of the way. A layup by Zach Walker and two charity tosses from Joey Swanson gave Niagara some breathing room at 61-54.

The upper hand didn’t last long as Kiefer Powers, who finished with a game high 29 points, shook free for a pair of buckets and a 61-60 deficit with just a half minute to play. Free throws by Colin Anderson eventually sealed the win for the Badgers.

Walker popped in 20 points to key Niagara, Swanson added 13, Anderson 10 and Zychowski 9.

Following the big performance by Powers was Jameson Bardowski with 21 points.

In the jayvee game, Niagara posted a 42-33 win.

Gillett Holds

Off Coleman

Taking advantage of their inside tandem of Clint Long (22 points) and Shane Anderson (15), Gillett knocked off host Coleman 48-39.

The Tigers owned a 26-12 lead at intermission before getting outscored 27-22 over the final two frames.

The 6’4 Long tossed in 8 points in the first half before adding 9 more in the fourth quarter. His paint partner Anderson, also standing at 6’4, added 10 points in the opening half.

Austin Malecki canned a trio of three point shots and finished with 16 points while Zach Zeitler and Jon Salewski added 5 points each.
