Goodman-Pembine Claims Top Honors

Sparked by a MVP performance from Trent Heath, the Goodman-Pembine Patriots claimed the team title at the 34th annual Lena Holiday Tournament with a 77-62 win over defending champion Oshkosh Valley Christian Friday night.

This was the first title for the Patriots at the holiday tournament while host Lena and NEW Lutheran have won the event 6 times each.

The Patriots (6-3) opened the 4-team hardwood classic with a 68-62 victory over Lincoln Hills Thursday before knocking off Valley Christian Friday. Lincoln Hills captured third place with a 57-44 win over host Lena.

In being voted the tournament MVP, Heath fired in 40 points during the two-game performance and proved to be a vital cog for coach Paul Whitt’s crew.

Joining Heath on the all-tournament team were Tyler and Ryan VanMaanen of Valley Christian, Justin Heimke of Lena, Goodman-Pembine’s Alex Whitt and Deondre of Lincoln Hills.

Whitt, Heath Lead

Patriots To 68-62

Tournament Win

Alex Whitt and Trent Heath combined for 40 points in leading Goodman-Pembine past Lincoln Hills in the semifinals at the Lena Tournament Thursday 68-62. The Patriots trailed 36-33 at intermission and 50-47 after three frames before mounting a late comeback.

Over the final 8 minutes, Whitt fired in 6 points, Heath 5 and Randall Bose 4 to key a 22-17 rally.

Whitt sailed through for a layup to open the fourth quarter while Heath fired in a 10-footer and added a tip-in to put the Patriots on top 53-52 (6:11). Moments later 6’7 Brennan Pierquet grabbed an offensive rebound and scored followed by a steal and layup from Heath for a 57-52 edge (5:24).

Lincoln Hills scored the next 6 points to go up 58-57 before Bose drilled a baseline jumper and a free throw giving the Patriots the lead for good at 60-58 (3:42). A twisting layup from Whitt and the front end of a two shot foul by Pierquet put the Patriots up 64-60 with 1:45 remaining.

Bose took a nifty feed from Pierquet for a tip-in while Roman Grebin drilled two free throws with 0:11 left for that 68-62 final score.

Both teams netted 19 points in the first quarter before Lincoln Hills pried open a 33-30 halftime lead. The Patriots faced a 47-42 deficit with 1:40 remaining in the third frame before Heath scored on an inbounds play and Whitt beat the buzzer with a three pointer to get within 50-47.

Lena Starts Fast, Fades

In 62-55 Semifinal Loss

Putting together their best first half of the season, Lena opened up a 34-26 lead before faltering over the final two frames in suffering a 62-55 setback to Oshkosh Valley Christian.

Still in search of that elusive first win, the Wildcats rode a trio of three point shots each from freshman Matt Marquardt and senior Justin Heimke to that 8 point cushion. Along the way Lena built up a 34-21 edge with 1:21 left in the half following a trey from the hot shooting Heimke.

Taking on the defending tourney champs, Lena trailed 19-15 at the first break despite getting 5 points each from Heimke and freshman Nash Haney along with a three point shot by Marquardt. Lena fell behind 19-10 before Heimke connected on a jumper (1:18) and Marquardt twirled the twine with 18 seconds left.

Lena kept up the charge in period two, running off a 19-7 spurt to pry open the halftime lead. Coach Jeff Heimke saw his cagers open the period on a 15-0 run, including a pair of threes by Marquardt (4:38 and 3:52) along with 7 points from Heimke.

The scoring outburst by Heimke featured a three just 26 ticks into the frame along with a of layups and that 30-19 lead at the 3:08 mark. Oshkosh closed out the half on a 7-4 run as Ryan VanMaanen fired in 5 points, keyed by a layup with 0:34 left for a 34-26 score.

Finding success inside the Lena zone defense, Oshkosh watched 6’3 Tyler VanMaanen toss in 10 of his game high 24 points in period three while brother Ryan added 7 points to grab the upper hand at 45-39. Lena managed just 5 points in the third quarter...3 by Roy O’Harrow and two free throws from Heimke.

Needing a big rally to pull off the win, Lena never got it and was outscored 17-16 in the fourth quarter. O’Harrow netted 7 points for Lena, Heimke 5 and Jacob Ellman 4.

The VanMaanen boys combined for 9 points, including 5 by Ryan.

Heimke was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 23 points, O’Harrow added 14 and Marquardt 9.

-Finals Results-

Lena Comes Up

Short For Third

Despite Justin Heimke finding the mark for 4 treys and a game high 23 points, Lena came out on the short end of a 57-44 third place battle against Lincoln Hills.

The Wildcats owned a 16-11 edge at the first break as Heimke netted 6 points and Marquardt 5 before falling behind 31-27 by intermission. Over the final two frames, Lena came out on the short end of a 26-17 blitzing.

Heimke connected on three point shots in the first and second frames while adding a pair in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Marquardt did all of his scoring in the first half with 8 points while Roy O’Harrow added 5.

Balanced Attack

Sparks Patriots

To Title 77-62

With five players making their way into double digit scoring, the Patriots knocked off Valley Christian 77-62 in the title game. Heath fired in 21 points for Goodman-Pembine, Pierquet 18, Grebin 16, Whitt 12 and Bose 10.

The Patriots cruised to a 37-27 halftime lead as Grebin drilled a trio of treys and the 6’7 Pierquet added 15 points, including 11 in a 24-17 second quarter surge.

Oshkosh Valley Christian mounted a rally in period three (21-19) behind 11 points from Tyler VanMaanen to close within 56-48.

Down the stretch the Patriots used a 7-13 free throw mark as Heath went 4-4 to hang on. Whitt connected on 8 points in the final frame on two buckets, a trey and 1-2 free throws.

Ryan VanMaanen topped Valley Christian with 27 points, 18 in the first half while brother Tyler added 21.
