Dr. John A. Thanos

Dr. John Andrew Thanos, 96, of Marinette passed away on Friday, Jan. 4 at Rennes Health Center-West in Peshtigo.

Born April 28, 1916 in Milwaukee to Andrew John and Anthie (Shane) Thanos, he spent his early life in Milwaukee and was a graduate of West Division High School. He went on to earn degrees from Marquette University in Milwaukee and the Marquette University School of Dentistry. While in Milwaukee, he married the former Geraldine Elizabeth McKittrick on Feb. 14, 1943. During World War II he served in the United States Navy, stationed in San Diego, Calif.

Dr. Thanos moved to Marinette in 1945 and established a dental practice there, retiring in 1988. Outside of his practice he enjoyed fishing, boating, playing cribbage with his sons and bridge, as well as spending time with family and going to camp. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a 68 year member of the Marinette American Legion Post 39. He had also been a member of Marinette Masonic Lodge 182, Marinette Commandery No. 26 and the Beja Shrine of Green Bay. Dr. Thanos was a life member of the American Dental Association, Wisconsin Dental Association and the Marinette-Oconto Dental Society.

He is survived by his children, Karen S. Farr of Green Bay, Andrew John Thanos, D.D.S. (Mary Anne) and Jared J. Thanos, both of Marinette, Kandace T. Higley (William) and Jeffrey C. Thanos (Tina), both of Menominee and Joel K. Thanos (Patty Fuelle) of Waunakee; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by siblings, Frances Kosalos of Wauwatosa, Charles Thanos (Marilyn) of Milwaukee, Helen Haefer of New Berlin and Mary Sutton (Robert) of Lakewood Ranch, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Joyce Kroll of Peshtigo and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Geraldine, on June 1, 2007 and siblings, Esther, Charlie, Nick, James and Aphrodite.

A private service will be held at Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home in Marinette with Rev. William L. Bippus officiating. Interment will be made in the Columbarium of St. Paul’s Church at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested for the M&M Area Community Foundation, P.O. Box 846, Menominee, MI 49858, or the charity of one’s choice.
