Following A Recount, Bulldogs Bag Team Title At Trocat Meet

Following a recount of the final score, the Peshtigo Bulldogs were crowned champions of the Green Bay West/Southwest Trocat scramble Saturday afternoon.

Originally host West/Southwest was awarded the title with a score of 246 while Peshtigo totaled 244.5 at the 7-team meet. During a recount, Peshtigo finished with a 239.5 point total to edge West/Southwest at 238.

Coach Warren Howard’s grapplers notched a pair of individual titles as Austin Maye was first in the 113 pound field while Andy Johnston ruled the 285 bracket.

The title for Maye (13-3) included a trio of byes along with a 15 second pin over Nick Taylor of Southwest/West and a thrilling 2-1 decision over Dalton Parson of Shawano.

After opening with a pair of pins, Johnston (11-2) was awarded two byes before blanking Kodiak Mahkimehtas of Shawano in the finals 6-0.

Second place finishes for Peshtigo included Bryan Shevy (120), DJ Messenger (132) Steven Strojny (138) and Derrik Maye (160).

Third place bronze medals were awarded to Brock Kangas (126), Shane Marquardt (145), Josh Jansen (195), Maverick Williquette (220) and Drake Koenigs (285).

“We won a total of 12 medals and first place as a team. We are still a young team but are showing a lot of improvement,” Howard said. “One of the good matches was Andy Johnston avenging an early season loss to the Shawano wrestler where he dominated the match with a 6-0 decision.”

Oconto Falls Second

At Home Invitational

The annual Brawl in the Falls was won by BayPort with score of 290.5 followed by Oconto Falls 236.5 and Bonduel 152.

Lena-STAA came in 9th place at the 14-team meet with 54 points, Gillett-Suring 13th 28 and Marinette last at 22.

The host Panthers had five champions crowned in Gunnar Leisner 113 pounds, Brett Ash 126, Dewey Krueger 132, Mitch Friedman 138 and Jacob Morrissey 170.

Friedman (21-0) was voted the outstanding wrestler of the meet after recording a pair of pins to go along with a 15-4 major decision over Jason Ipsarides of Cedarburg in the finals. Morrissey (21-0) registered a trio of pins to claim the 170 crown with victories coming at 0:28, 0:56 and 1:24.

Sam Beschta paced Lena-STAA with a first place effort at 220 pounds and improving to 19-3 on the season. Beschta recorded a 1:01 pin in the first round, beat BayPort’s Joe Kitslaar 5-3 before tipping Joey Tauchen of Bonduel 5-2 in the finals.

Mikey Kallies notched a third place finish for Lena-STAA at heavyweight while Dom Ramirez was 4th at 152 pounds.

Marinette’s best performance was turned in by Jaden Boivin with a third place medal at 160 pounds. Boivin began his day with a 3:33 pin over Jacob Berth of New Holstein, fell 6-2 to Alexander Wall of BayPort and beat Elliott Ebert of Reedsville for third place.

Gillett-Suring was sparked by Hunter Egge with a fourth place finish at 106.
