Peshtigo's Winning Streak Reaches 43

With their M-O Conference winning streak reaching 43 in a row, the Peshtigo Bulldogs improved to 7-0 in league play and 11-1 overall following lopsided wins over STAA 63-26 and Coleman 60-26.

Owning a game lead over second place Suring (6-1), Peshtigo continues to close in on the all-time conference winning streak record of 45 straight games set by the Wausaukee Rangers from 1965-1968.

Under the direction of Tom Wilkins, Wausaukee put together three straight 12-0 seasons and 45 victories before getting upended by Niagara on December 17, 1968 in overtime 75-72. Niagara went on to win the conference that year with a 12-2 readout behind the efforts of MVP Doug Waitrovich and coach Dave Quick.

In their latest conference routs, Peshtigo rode the scoring of talented juniors Jordan Berth and Zack Neumann. Berth burned STAA for 17 points and 13 rebounds then came back with a 18 point and 6 rebound performance against Coleman. Neumann was just as effective, totaling 36 points in the twin win.

Playing just once this week, second place Suring rode a balanced scoring attack to clobber Crivitz 81-48, Niagara improved to 6-2 with victories over Coleman 72-21 and Gillett 55-44 while up and down Wausaukee moved above the .500 mark after topping Lena 78-50 and rival Crivitz 68-54.

League leading Peshtigo will host Gillett Friday before starting the second half of league play with a trip to Niagara on Tuesday. In other key clashes, Suring entertains Wausaukee then heads to STAA on January 15.

Defense Shines As

Peshtigo Rolls 63-26

After allowing 13 points in the opening quarter, Peshtigo gave up just 13 more the rest of the game in clobbering STAA 63-26. The key for Peshtigo was a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap that forced STAA into 29 turnovers and stymied their offense.

In notching the win over STAA, the Bulldogs owned a 32-15 halftime lead before wrapping up the win with a 31-11 second half spurt. A total of 10 Peshtigo players made their way into the scoring column.

"We had another slow start, were up 8-1 and switched to a 2-3 zone which is something we want to use throughout the year. STAA exploited it and tied the score at 13-13 at the end of the first quarter. The offense kept things going and we went to a 1-3-1 zone, which forced a lot of turnovers and led to easy baskets and a 19-2 run,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said.

Berth had another huge performance for Peshtigo with a “double-double” on 17 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Neumann added 16 points and 5 rebounds while Matt Borkovec, Gunner Kinney and Dakota Keller chipped in with 5 points each.

“Jordan and Zack had nice games for us. We didn't shoot the ball very well from the perimeter, but managed to get the ball inside,” Spaulding added.

The Bulldogs connected on 26-63 shots (41%) and owned a 36-16 rebounding edge, 21 of those boards coming on the offensive end.

Jameson Bardowski was the lone Cavalier in double figure scoring with 13 points and 4 rebounds, while the conference’s leading scorer Kiefer Powers was limited to 6 points. Powers came into the contest averaging 23.2 points per game.

The Cavaliers struggled to a 36% shooting mark (10-28).

In the jayvee game, Peshtigo posted a 44-20 win behind 15 points from Deepack Daroach.

Balanced Scoring

Keys Suring Romp

With 4 players scoring 13 points or more, Suring blasted visiting Crivitz 81-48. The high flying Eagles soared to a 26-15 lead at the first break and owned a commanding 42-23 edge by intermission.

Topping the Suring scoring was Cody Christensen with 23 points, 9 in the first quarter and 10 in the third. Dan Sweda tallied 21 points, 9 in the first half, Blake Strehlow 15 and Jay Tienor 13 points.

“Overall we had a nice team effort and some great balanced scoring. Cody is continuing to come back from that wrist injury and nearing the level of play he was at towards the end of last season. This was his best game to date,” Suring coach Gary Regal said.

With Sweda and Christensen tossing in 9 points each, Suring started strong and never looked back. Strehlow fired in 5 points in period two and Tienor the lone trey of the game.

Christensen continued to make a strong return with 10 points in the third frame to key a 20-11 surge. Over the final 8 minutes, Sweda connected on a trio of shots for 6 points, Tienor two buckets and a pair of free throws while Strehlow added 4 points.

Crivitz was paced by AJ Garcia with 15 points, including a trio of treys, Ben Fischer 10 and Colton Lange 9.

In the jayvee game Crivitz posted a 40-37 win.

Niagara Routs

Coleman 72-21

Owning the upper hand in every quarter, Niagara rolled to a lopsided 72-21 win over visiting Coleman. The Badgers were up 32-9 at intermission before capping the big win with a 40-12 second half charge.

Jordan Zawada paced Niagara with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Joey Swanson added 16 points, Colin Anderson 10 points and 7 assists while Zach Walker netted 9.

Niagara made 31 of 54 shots (57%) and held a 36-20 rebounding edge.

“Our halfcourt man defense was very good all night. Everyone played extremely well on defense,” Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said.

Miquel Fodoua netted 5 points for Coleman, which made just 9 of 36 shots (25%).

Wausaukee Whips

Wildcats 78-50

Ryan Nystrom fired in 19 points, James Kramer 18 and Aaron Schlies 14 as Wausaukee powered past host Lena 78-50. The Rangers rolled to a 34-19 halftime cushion before adding on a 44-31 second half scoring edge.

Nystrom scored 10 points in the first half and 7 more in period three while Kramer tallied 10 over the final two frames.

Justin Heimke was a one man show for Lena with a game high 33 points. The long range bombing Wildcat found the mark for 7 two-pointers, 4 treys and went 7-13 on free throws. Heimke battered the Rangers for 13 points in the first half, 11 in period three and 9 more in the fourth quarter.

Roy O'Harrow was the number two scorer for Lena with 9 while freshman Matt Marquardt added 6 points.

In the jayvee game, Wausaukee claimed a 62-8 victory.

Bulldogs Blast

Coleman 60-26

With Neumann and Berth combining for 38 points, Peshtigo cruised to its 43rd straight conference win 60-26 over host Coleman. The Bulldogs took control early and owned a 36-8 halftime cushion.

Neumann got his mates off and running by tossing in 11 points in the first quarter to key a 21-2 spurt. Berth added 6 points in period two while Neumann canned a pair of shots for that 28 point spread.

With reserves seeing plenty of playing time over the final two frames, Peshtigo wrapped up the lopsided win with a 24-18 scoring edge.

Freshman Logan Noffke was the number three scorer for Peshtigo with 5 points while Levi Sanborn, Gunner Kinney and AJ Woller netted 4 points each.

The Bulldogs made 24 of 51 shots (47%) and held a 29-19 rebounding edge. Peshtigo forced 28 turnovers, had 21 steals and scored 34 points in the paint.

Dominick Hansen fired in 12 points to lead Coleman while Zack Zeitler added 9.

Having trouble locating the hoop, Coleman connected on 9-34 field goals (27%) and only 5-17 on threes.

In the jayvee game, Peshtigo registered a 48-16 victory behind 12 points from Marcus Sharkey.

Niagara Puts 4 In

Double Figures To

Top Gillett 55-44

With 4 cagers producing double digit scoring, the Badgers improved to 6-2 with a 55-44 road win over Gillett. Niagara held a slim 27-26 halftime lead, before using a 17-4 surge in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Jordan Zawada topped Niagara with 15 points, Zack Walker added 12 while Joey Swanson and Colin Anderson scored 10 points each. Walker did most of his damage in the fourth quarter with 9 points while Zawada fired in 10 in the first half.

Clint Long topped Gillett with 14 points and Shane Anderson added 10.

Schlies, Orlando Key

68-54 Wausaukee Win

Aaron Schlies tossed in a game high 20 points and Zach Orlando connected 5 times from behind the arc as Wausaukee knocked off visiting Crivitz 68-54.

The Rangers struggled early, falling behind 26-22 before getting back into the game with a 46-28 second half charge.

Schlies scored 9 points in the first quarter and 13 in the half while Orlando tallied all 17 of his points over the final two frames. The sharp shooting Ranger dialed in on a trio of treys in the third frame then added two more bombs and a two-pointer. Ryan Nystrom was the number three scorer for Wausaukee with 13 points, 11 in the second half while James Kramer added 10.

Ben Fischer topped Crivitz with 15 points, Colton Lange added 14 and AJ Garcia 12.

Powers Nets 26 As

STAA Rolls To Win

Kiefer Powers fired in 26 points as the Cavaliers had no trouble with visiting Lena 66-23. Powers finished with five 2’s, five 3’s to go along along with a 1-2 effort from the free throw stripe.

Jameson Bardowski added plenty of scoring punch with 14 points as 10 Cavaliers made their way into the scorebook.

After falling behind 5-0, STAA scored the final 9 points of the opening frame then took control with a 14-3 effort in period two. The second half continued to go the green and gold way by a 43-15 edge.

Justin Heimke topped Lena with 10 points and Jacob Ellman added 6.

In the jayvee game, STAA registered a 29-11 win.

Wausaukee Holds

Off Stephenson

In a Saturday afternoon hardwood clash, the Rangers put 7 cagers in the scoring column to knock off visiting Stephenson 61-53. James Kramer keyed the Wausaukee attack with 21 points, Beau DeLaet added 11, Zach Orlando 9 and Aaron Schlies 7.

Wausaukee owned a 30-22 halftime lead before both teams netted 31 second half points.

Orlando fired in a trio of 3’s in the opening quarter, DeLaet tallied 7 in period three and Kramer capped his big night with 10 points in the final frame.

Casey Wilson scored 12 points for Stephenson, Austin Grinsteiner 11 and Kyle Raboin 10.

Coleman Clobbered

By Gibraltar 79-23

Coleman fell behind 42-15 at halftime and never recovered in dropping a 79-23 contest to host Gibraltar Saturday.

Zack Zeitler scored 9 points to lead Coleman while Blake Margis added 5.

Matt Hecht and Austin Bauldry fired in a dozen points each for Gibraltar.
