Losing Week For Marinette

It was a tough week for the Marinette Marines boys on the Bay Conference hardwood planks, suffering a pair of losses and falling to 6-6 on the season, 3-4 in league play.

Marinette’s losing ways began with a Thursday home trouncing at the hands of Luxemburg-Casco 59-40 following by a Tuesday thrashing at Hortonville 75-48.

The Marines will get back on the Bay basketball court Friday with a home clash against New London before hitting the road Tuesday with a trip to Shawano.

Marines Stifled By

L-C’s Zone Defense

Going up against a 1-2-2 zone defense, which is designed to shutdown outside shooting, the Marines struggled offensively in suffering a 59-40 Bay loss to visiting Luxemburg-Casco Thursday.

The Marinette offense, and in particular senior scoring ace Derek Klegin, never got untracked or had open looks. Averaging nearly 25 points per game, Klegin netted 19 against the Spartans with 14 of those coming in the second half.

Marinette held the upper hand twice in the game...3-2 on a Klegin trey along with 5-2 following a baseline jumper by Austin Wright.

L-C closed out the first quarter on a 12-4 run and controlled things the rest of the way. Relying on a patient offensive attack along with some long range shooting, the Spartans connected on 9 treys in the game to go along with 14 two-pointers.

Three straight shots from behind the arc by Carson Falk, Depree Stevenson and Cole Kirchman put L-C in front 11-5 before Marinette used layups by Ty Bebo along with a press breaking bucket by Brian Klumb to cut the deficit to 12-9 with 1:40 remaining in the period.

Marinette would not score the rest of the frame as turnovers against fullcourt pressure and forced shots failed to find the basket. In fact the scoring drought lasted until the 3:30 mark of period two when Klegin connected on two free throws after being fouled on a layup following a steal.

By that time Marinette trailed 19-11 and sat 18 points in arrears by intermission 30-12.

How bad was the Marine offense in period two? Try 3 points worth as Wright hit the front end of a bonus shot with 1.7 ticks left for the final point.

In between L-C struck 3 more times on treys, including a pair by freshman Jake Zeitler in a span of 24 seconds that pushed the lead to 27-11 (2:44 and 2:20).

Both offenses came to life in a 17-17 third quarter standoff as Klegin hit for 6 points, Klumb two buckets and Wright a trey. The sharp shooting Zeitler countered with a pair of threes for L-C while Levi Dax added another long bomb.

Taking a 47-29 edge into the fourth quarter, L-C closed out the win on a 12-11 run. Klegin and Wright tallied the Marinette points with 8 and 3 respectively, including three 3’s.

Marinette connected on 16-44 shots (36%) compared to 23-41 for the winners (56%).

In the jayvee game, Marinette fell 50-37 while also coming up short in the freshman outing 45-43.

Marines Hammered

By Hortonville 75-48

In a game that was over early, the Marines fell behind 20-10 at the first break and 37-17 by halftime in suffering a 75-48 defeat.

Derek Klegin fired in 22 points to lead the Marines, Brian Klumb added 11, Marcus Maguire 8 and Austin Wright 5.

Jake Bamke topped Hortonville with 27 points.

Marinette lost the jayvee game 51-35 as well as the frosh outing 44-37.
