Coleman Stays In Control

Sparked by a pair of hardwood routs, the Coleman Cougars continue to sit atop the 9-team M-O Conference race with a perfect 9-0 readout. Coleman barely broke a sweat while knocking off Wausaukee 62-27 and STAA 59-12 to stay ahead of second place Peshtigo (8-2).

The Bulldogs remained within striking distance following close wins over Lena 43-38 and Crivitz 42-41 in overtime. Both games went down to the wire and in fact, coach Bob Kuchta’s cagers needed some last second heroics to pull out the victories.

Gillett moved into a tie for third place with Suring after pursing two wins. Now 6-3, the Tigers slammed Oconto County rival Suring 41-21 then dismantled Wausaukee 55-17.

Lena is the only other conference team with a winning record at 5-3 and sits in fifth place.

League outings will continue Thursday with a full round of games along with a make-up affair Saturday as first place Coleman travels to Crivitz for a 3:30pm tip-off.

Coleman Uses Fast

Start To Top Rangers

The Cougars rode a 22-3 first quarter surge all the way to a lopsided 62-27 victory over the Rangers. The Cougars got some big performances in their 8th M-O win of the season, keeping its unblemished record intact.

Makenzie Sadowski, the conference’s leading scorer with an average of 15.9 a game heading into the Wausaukee match up, poured in 17 to lead all scorers, including nine in the runaway first quarter for Coleman.

Backing Makenzie up were 11-point efforts from both Hope Process and Abby Bieber.

Wausaukee was led by seven points from Crysta Clark, coming off of a pair of three pointers and a free throw while Sara Wickman, Charleen Fick and Stevie Oldenberg each chipped in six.

Bulldogs Hold Off Late

Lena Rally In 43-38 Win

Owning a 38-23 lead with 2:56 remaining in the game, Peshtigo nearly stumbled down the stretch run before holding off a late Lena rally in claiming a 43-38 win.

The Bulldogs were outscored 21-15 over the final 4 minutes, including 15-3 in the final minutes before prevailing.

  “We started fast and had great ball pressure all game. Handled their 2-1-2 half court trap well...game of runs for both teams. I like how we kept our composure as they made their runs and we extended the lead to 15 with 3:30 to go,” Peshtigo coach Bob Kuchta said. “We need to finish better, (hit ft’s better) take better shots when we have a lead late. Nicole Motkowski had her best game of the year shooting 5-8 and lead us in scoring (11) along with 5 blocks, rebounds (4) and shooting percentage.”

This game was filled with fouls (42) and free throws (47) as Peshtigo made 13 of 26 charity shots while Lena went 8-21 (38%).

Leading Peshtigo to the win were Shannen Ganter and Nicole Motkowski with 11 points each, Amanda Majewski added 9 and Addison Cogswell 5.

Just a freshman, Majewski was clutch in the stretch run with 7 points, including a nifty left hand layup and 3 free throws in the final 0:18 to preserve the win.

The Bulldogs were off and running with the opening tip off, soaring to a 9-0 lead before Lena finally got on the board when Melissa Bushmaker canned a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left. Prior to the Bushmaker charity tosses, the Bulldogs saw Ganter twirl the twine for a trey while Motkowski canned a pair of 8-footers.

Both teams struggled for points in the second frame as a rash of turnovers and fouls kept the offenses under wraps. Five straight points by Ganter, including a trey, propelled the Bulldogs to a 15-3 lead with 5:35 left in the half.

The score didn’t stay that way as Kayla Vanlanen dropped in a pair of jumpers and Marlena Wagner the first of her three point shots as Lena rallied within 16-13 at the 1:49 mark. A free throw from Cogswell (0:22) along with one by Carly Dietrich at the buzzer put Peshtigo up 18-13.

Motkowski connected twice to give the Bulldogs breathing room at 23-17 in period three (4:55) while Brittany Marquardt drilled a trey and Cogswell a 10-footer to go up 28-19. Lena did manage to close the gap to 20-17 on a jumper by the talented Wagner, before Peshtigo closed out the frame on an 8-2 run.

Patience and good ball movement enabled the Bulldogs to steadily increase the lead to 38-23 as Dietrich, Motkowski and Majewski tallied buckets.

But the Bulldogs couldn’t maintain the success. With Lena turning up the defensive pressure, Peshtigo started to force passes and take ill-advised shots. The end result spelled trouble for the Bulldogs as Lena went on a 15-5 closing run. Wagner took over the game and scored 9 straight points on a pair of three point shots along with a three point play to get the Cats within 38-33 (1:13).

Majewski gave her mates some breathing room with a layup, while also drawing a foul on Emily Ellman. Majewski missed the free throw then watched Ellman connect on a trey with 0:43 left for a 40-36 score.

Peshtigo’s next trip down the floor saw Ganter draw the fifth foul on Bushmaker, but couldn’t make either shot giving the ball back to Lena. Again the Cats couldn’t convert, missing a shot with Majewski rebounding and quickly getting fouled. She made the first shot for a 41-36 lead before adding on two more tosses with :08 ticks left for the final margin of victory.

Wagner took home game high scoring honors with 14 points, 9 coming in the fourth quarter while Vanlanen and Bushmaker added 6 points each.

Wolverines Improving

But Fall To Badgers

Niagara posted a 52-30 win over the Wolverines behind 14 points from Brooklyn Wolosyn while Jenna Carlton chipped in nine.

The Badgers shot 30% (19-64) from the field in this one and led in the rebounding category with 33 total boards to 24 for the Wolverines.

“It was a great night for the whole team,” said Niagara coach Laura Gunderson. “My girls did a nice job offensively against the 2-3 defense. In practice, we’ve really been working on finding the open shots and tonight the girls showed me they can do it.”

Meanwhile, Crivitz continues to improve. Jennifer Kempka poured in 10 points to pace the Wolverines while Victoria Neuman added eight on a 22% (11-51) shooting night.

Gillett Claims Oconto

County Cage Battle

Limiting Suring to single digit scoring in each of the opening 3 quarters, Gillett reigned in a clash of Oconto County teams with a 41-21 win.

The Tigers owned a 17-6 lead at intermission and upped the margin to 30-10 after three frames.

Cougars Clobber STAA

Coleman routed the host Cavalettes of STAA on Monday and picked up their ninth-straight M-O win by a final score of 59-12.

The Cougars outscored the STAA girls 12-2 in the first quarter and then 24-8 in the second to run away with it. Makenzie Sadowski and Abby Bieber each had 12 points to lead the way for Coleman while Lindsey Kerr had nine and Ashley Teteak eight.

STAA’s scoring came off a five-point performance from Riley Schultz, four from Taylor Wilson and three from Alyssa Hornick.

Bulldogs Get Past

Wolverines In OT

The Bulldogs needed an extra frame of play to barely get past the up-and-coming Wolverines of Crivitz Monday night in a 42-41 win that could have gone the other way.

“The girls played really well,” said Crivitz head coach Joe Eastman. “The game should not have gone into overtime as we missed three bunny shots and four free throws in the final 20 seconds. It was one of our better games of the year. We put in a new offense over the weekend and it really helped. We also changed defenses at halftime after Peshtigo killed us with 3’s in the first half.”

After being outscored by the Bulldogs 18-9 in the opening quarter, the Wolverines bounced back for a 10-10 second frame, turned in a 6-5 third and then went on a 14-6 run in the final eight minutes of regulation to force an overtime period. The extra session saw Peshtigo tally three points compared to just two by Crivitz for the win.

Britany Gorman led all scorers with 12 for Crivitz. Also contributing for the Wolverines were Theresa Orlando with seven points as well as Victoria Neuman, Jennifer Kempka and Crystarra Batten with six each.

Peshtigo got a well rounded and unselfish game scoring-wise as nine players found the bucket. Amanda Majewski and Nicole Motkowski each had eight; Brittany Marquardt and Amanda Emmes turned in six apiece while Shannen Ganter scored five.

Gillett Races Past

Wausaukee 55-17

Gillett took it to the Rangers in Wausaukee Monday evening, claiming a 55-17 victory after holding the home team to under 10 points in each of the game’s four quarters.

KC Reed led all scorers with 14 points for the victorious Tigers while Wausaukee was led by five from Sara Wickman. Crysta Clark and Stevie Oldenburg each had three for Wausaukee in defeat.

Suring Stops Niagara

Kelsey School and Erin Fisher each scored 13 points as Suring got past the visiting Badgers of Niagara 54-25.

Brooke Gauthier was right behind with 12 points for the winners while Callie VanBellinger rounded out the Eagles’ double-digit scorers with an even 10.

The Badgers were led by seven from Kaitlyn Lundin, six from Brooklyn Wolosyn and four apiece from Kayla Evans and Jenna Carlton.

Lena Roughed Up

By NEW Lutheran

Falling behind 27-16 at halftime proved to be too much for Lena in suffering a 56-41 road loss to NEW Lutheran Monday. Over the final two frames, the Wildcats tried to rally but saw the host team own a 29-25 edge.

Jaci Mielke paced NEW (5-6) with 24 points while Lena was lead by Marlena Wagner and Melissa Bushmaker with 11 and 9 points.

Sevastopol Stumps STAA

Only two nights prior to hosting STAA Thursday, the Lady Pioneers of Sevastopol got clobbered 54-6 by Oconto in a game where they were held scoreless in the first half.

It stands to reason that a loss like that might provide more than a little motivation for a team in its next contest.

And it was the Cavalettes who got to play the role of punching bag, falling to Sevastopol by 34 with a final score of 56-22.

Lucy Bley was the game’s high scorer with 24 for the winners, followed closely by teammate Megan LaPlant with 22.

STAA was led by Alley Schultz and her eight points while Taylor Wilson and Breeana Armburst added four apiece.
