Stephen J. Kakuk, Jr.

Stephen Joseph Kakuk, jr., 79, of Stephenson, Mi. passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at home.

Born on Aug. 7, 1933 in Manitowoc to the late Stephen Joseph, sr. and Dorothy Julia (Tadych) Kakuk, he was a graduate of Stephenson High School Class of 1952.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Era and on Sept. 10, 1955 married the former Janice Marjorie Hornik in Alaska. He worked for Kakuk Construction, was a dairy farmer and self employed logger. He enjoyed gardening and was known for his garlic. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and further enjoyed bowling and watching the Green Bay Packers. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, American Legion Post #43 where he was past treasurer for six years, served 20 years on the Upper Michigan Draft board and also served as president, secretary and treasurer for the Menominee County Timberman's Association.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; five children, Stephen J. III (Jean) of Iron Mountain, Mi., Kathy (Raymond LaPointe) Chaltry of Ingalls, Mi., William (Lynn) of Menominee, Mark (Christina) of Daggett, Mi. and Barbara Kakuk of Peshtigo; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters, Karen Polakowski, Lois (Dale) Brower, Sharon (Jan) Thoney, Margie (Tom) Kakuk and Patricia (Larry) Barker; six brothers, Dr. Thomas (Martha), Ronald (Jeannine), Anthony (Reeny), Donald (Carol), John (Marie) and Kieth (Vicki); a sister-in-law, Mary Kakuk and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy (Paul) Svinicki and Mary Kakuk; a brother, Francis and a brother-in-law, Gary Polakowski.

Family and friends called at Anderson Diehm Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 4 after 4 p.m. until time of military rites at 7 p.m., followed by a parish prayer service. Visitation continued at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 9 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Precious Blood Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Fr. Michael Ocran officiating. Burial was in Stephenson Township Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in his name for American Legion Post #43 of Stephenson.
