Bulldogs Extend Streak, Lead The Peshtigo Bulldogs took a huge step towards a third straight M-O Conference basketball title with wins over Suring 31-30 and Wausaukee 57-32.
The double win week improves Peshtigos hardwood readout to 13-0 in league play and gives coach Ryan Spauldings troops a 1 1/2 game lead with 3 contests left.
The Bulldogs, 18-1 overall, also stretched their conference win streak to 49 straight games, which should continue the rest of the season.
Peshtigos winning ways began Thursday in a thrilling 31-30 road win over second place Suring. This game had everything a basketball fan wanted..huge crowd, two good teams and a last second win. The Bulldogs survived thanks to a late three point shot by Jordan Berth and some missed attempts by Suring.
Things were a little easier on Tuesday as Peshtigo allowed 7 second half points in turning back Wausaukee 57-32.
Elsewhere in M-O play, Suring bounced back with a 70-27 rout of Lena while Niagara earned a split to move to 9-5. The Badgers got bumped by Wausaukee Thursday 58-47 before knocking off STAA Tuesday 58-40.
Heading down the homestretch of conference action, M-O teams will play a pair of games. League leading Peshtigo travels to STAA Friday and hosts Coleman Tuesday while Suring heads to Crivitz before getting a bye.
Peshtigo Pulls Out
Thrilling Victory Over
Suring In Showdown
M-O Conference match ups between the Suring Eagles and the Peshtigo Bulldogs are rarely lacking for drama these days and Thursdays installment was no exception. The Bulldogs overcame a late deficit with fundamental play and some hard-nose scoring from a usual suspect to secure a 31-30 win in Suring and stay undefeated in the M-O.
Tonight, we had a lot to overcome, said Peshtigo head coach Ryan Spaulding. But give Suring a lot of credit. We needed to work harder on offense to get open against them. But we still found the win. It might not have been the prettiest but we found a way to win it.
It was all defense early on as each squad made it more than a little difficult for the others offense. The scoreboard barely moved and read 4-2 for Peshtigo at the end of the games first eight minutes of play. The opening quarters lone highlight came late when Peshtigos Matt Borkovec got his own rebound after a miss shot because of tight Suring defense and went back up for the bucket and points three and four for Peshtigo.
The games pace quickened in the second after Surings Jay Tienor tied things up at four with a pair of free throws made. But the Peshtigo cagers got going in earnest on its next trip down the floor as Dakota Keller drove to the hoop for two, followed up by some fierce defense from Borkovec that forced a Suring turnover.
Later in the second quarter, the Bulldogs took an 11-6 lead as Borkovec inbounded to Zach Neumann, who sailed it up court to Jordan Berth despite serious pressure from an Eagle defender. Berth took the Neumann pass and promptly fired a dime down low for A.J. Woller, who also dodged a defender on his way to the basket to cap the pretty play.
With the noise level inside the gym ratcheting upward by the second, Suring responded on a nice shot by Dillon Kempen, good for three, to cut Peshtigos lead to just two at 11-9.
But Borkovec answered at the other end with a Peshtigo three pointer before Berth closed the quarter with an inside bucket for a 16-9 lead.
But as recent Peshtigo/Suring hoops history shows, the Eagles dont go quietly against the Bulldogs. And, while the Peshtigo squad was playing to keep its M-O record unblemished, the Eagles were also playing with extra fire in their eyes as this matchup with the rival Bulldogs marked the last time retiring head coach Gary Regal will roam his home court sideline in a regular season game.
The Eagles came out firing after the break and found a crack in the Peshtigo defense that they were able to exploit for a quick 10-0 run in the third that saw them take a 19-16 lead, much to the roaring delight of the hometown fans.
Tienor got the run going with a bomb from three-point territory, followed by another trey not long after from teammate Dan Sweda, making it 18-16 Suring.
Neumann managed to break up the Suring surge with a drive, cutting the Eagles lead to 21-20. Kempen answered with a drive of his own before closing out the quarter with another one after the Eagles made the most of some good passing for a 25-20 lead with the third quarter in the books.
Staring at a scoreboard reading 27-20 in favor of Suring early in the final frame, Peshtigos Berth decided enough was enough and drove to the basket for two, pulling his team back to within five. A stop by the Bulldogs on defense and a basket by Neumann made it 27-24 after Berth collected an offensive board and got him the ball.
With 3:10 left on the clock, it was Berth again putting his head down and driving right through a pair of defenders on his way to a bucket that cut Surings lead down to 28-26.
The Peshtigo big man wasnt done there though. After Surings Sweda nearly blew the roof off of the gym with a bucket that gave the home squad a 30-26 advantage, Berth found himself at the foul line in a pressure cooker of a situation with 2:27 remaining and his team trailing by two.
He hit them both, of course.
Free throws are very important. Theyre important the entire game but theyre magnified at the end when things are close like that, said Spaulding. Both teams missed a few but I thought those two free throws by Jordan late in the game, those were the big ones.
The Eagles went into protect mode from there, looking to burn the clock down to nothing in an effort to preserve their slim lead. But they ran into trouble hitting free throws and left Peshtigo with an opportunity late in the game, down by just one.
It was opportunity the Bulldogs would make the most out of.
As time on the clock slipped under the one-minute mark, the Peshtigo cagers began to work the ball around the top of the arc with crisp passes until Berth received the ball and very calmly sank a three-pointer to turn the game around and saddle Suring with a must-score situation as time ran out.
Cody Christensen, who finished the game with seven points for the Eagles and did a masterful job of defending Berth for the most part on the evening, found himself at the line for a pair of free throw shots with less than two seconds left on the clock. With the game on the line, he was unable to hit on either and Peshtigo made its way out of town with the narrow victory.
Its been 27, 28 years for me now and its time, said Surings Regal after the game and after bidding Suring basketball farewell with a heartfelt speech in front of the capacity crowd. What a group to go out with. Im very proud of these guys, how much theyve grown on and off the court. Weve been 41-3 at home since their freshman year. Thats pretty good. Unfortunately, those losses have all come against Peshtigo. Tonight, it came down to free throws in the fourth quarter. We were three of nine in the fourth. It was a great defensive game though, people got their moneys worth, I think.
Wausaukee Holds
Off Niagara 58-47
In an evenly matched conference tussle from the opening tip to the final buzzer, Wausaukee used a 21-9 fourth quarter surge to pull away from visiting Niagara 58-47.
In a 10-10 opening quarter deadlock, the Rangers got 4 points from Austin Guarniere along with a three from high scoring Aaron Schlies. Niagara countered with 4 points from Colin Anderson and three point shots by Joey Swanson and Zach Zychowski.
Schlies got more involved in the scoring act in period two with 8 points on a trio of buckets and two free throws while James Kramer provided some inside help with 4 counters. Zack Walker fired in a trey for 5 points while Swanson added the second of his three shots from behind the arc for a 26-24 deficit.
Coming out of halftime, Niagara saw Swanson toss in 5 points while Walker and Jordan Zawada added 4 each to key a 14-11 run and a slim 38-37 lead.
Down to the final 8 minutes, the Rangers used a trey by Beau DeLaet to go up for good at 40-38 while Ryan Nystrom struck from behind the arc for a 47-40 lead. Schlies was clutch down the stretch with a 4-4 free throw mark as Wausaukee used the free throw line to seal the win.
Zawada tried keeping Niagara close with a NBA-like three point shot but Ranger coach John Ranallo watched his troops connect on 8-14 charity tosses to seal the win. DeLaet popped in 6 points in the fourth quarter, Guarniere 5 while Zach Orlando and Nystrom added treys.
Schlies finished with a game high 19 points, including 8-8 free throws, Guarniere added 11, DeLaet and Nystrom 8 each and Orlando 7.
Swanson totaled 11 points for Niagara,Walker 10, Anderson and Zawada 9 each.
Wausaukee made it a clean sweep with a 40-29 jayvee win.
Crivitz Recovers From
Slow Start To Knock
Off Lena Cagers 57-44
Trailing for the entire first half, Crivitz used an 11-0 third quarter run to finally take the lead at 24-18 and turn back upset-minded Lena 57-44. The loss was the 47th in a row for the Wildcats.
The Wolverines had their hands full in the opening 16 minutes as Lena owned an 11-7 lead at the first break and 18-13 by intermission. Justin Heimke sparked the early surge with 8 points on a pair of treys while Matt Marquardt and Joe Jagiello added 4 points each. Lenas biggest lead in the first half was 16-7.
After a halftime chat with coach Jeff Baumann, Crivitz looked like a different team in the third quarter and opened with an 11-0 run. Jake Wiedemeier got the Wolverines rolling with a trio of buckets, Colton Lange added 7 points (trey), AJ Garcia 5 points (three) and Dominic Basso 4. When the third quarter ended, Crivitz owned a 35-29 edge and never looked back.
Over the final 8 minutes, the Wolverines continued to hold the upper hand (22-15) to win going away. Lange and Wiedemeier netted 6 points each while Basso added 4 more.
Heimke singlehandedly tried keeping Lena close with 10 points, including a trio of 3s.
Lange finished with 15 points, Wiedemeier 12 and Basso 10. The Wolverines played without the services of junior forward Ben Fischer, who was nursing a hamstring injury suffered in a loss to Gibraltar.
Heimke paced Lena with 21 points and Marquardt added 10.
We came out sluggish and Lena outhustled us for every ball..they were aggressive and shot the ball extremely well, Crivitz coach Jeff Baumann said. In the second half, we continued to press, forced some turnovers and got easy baskets. Overall, I was disappointed with our intensity and we were just flat.
Schmidt Shines In
46-21 STAA Victory
Striking five times from behind the three point line, Mike Schmidt twirled the twine for 20 points to lead the Cavaliers to a 46-41 home win over Gillett.
Jameson Bardowski was the number two scorer for STAA with 11 points, Brennan Bardowski added 6 and Kiefer Powers 4.
Gilletts top scorers were its 64 inside duo of Clint Long and Shane Anderson with 18 and 11 points. Long converted 6-7 free throws and Anderson 7-8.
Down 20-14 at halftime, the Cavaliers ran off a 32-21 second half surge to claim the win.
Casey Boyle drilled a three pointer for STAA while Jameson Bardowski went 5-7 from the free throw line.
In the jayvee game, STAA registered a 35-20 victory.

Blast Wausaukee
After giving up 25 first half points, Peshtigo tightened things up on the defensive end over the final two frames and allowed just 7 in knocking off Wausaukee 57-32.
Coming off that huge emotional win over Suring, the Bulldogs owned a 27-25 halftime lead before regrouping and dominating the second half by a 30-7 margin.
The Bulldogs connected on 33% of their shots (17-52), including 4-12 on threes. On the defensive end, Peshtigo forced the Rangers into 23 turnovers and 11 steals while holding a 28-23 rebounding edge.
Berth posted a double-double to lead the Bulldogs with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Borkovec added 14 points, Gunner Kinney 8 points, 4 boards and 3 steals while Neumann had 6 points and 9 rebounds.
The top scorer for Wausaukee was Nystrom with 13 points and 4 boards, DeLaet added 6 points and 4 rebounds while Kramer scored 5 points.
In the first half, the Bulldogs had their work cut out as Wausaukee rode 11 points from Nystrom to stay close. An 11-11 first quarter deadlock turned into a 27-25 Peshtigo halftime lead when Kinney drilled a late trey to put his mates ahead.
The second half proved to be a different story, especially on the defensive end. Peshtigo ran off a 17-2 surge in period three, highlighted by three point shots from Kinney and Borkovec, then capped the win with a 13-7 run over the final 8 minutes.
Suring Routs
Lena 70-27
The Eagles took their frustrations out on host Lena Tuesday to claim a lopsided 70-27 win. This game was over by halftime as Suring owned a 32-6 lead and was never threatened.
Cody Christensen paced Suring with 21 points while Blake Strehlow and Jay Tienor added 12 points each.
Justin Heimke fired in 19 points to lead Lena.
Niagara Turns
Back Cavvies
Putting the defensive clamps on STAAs high scoring Kiefer Powers and Jameson Bardowski, Niagara got back on the winning track with a 58-40 home win.
Balanced scoring proved key for the Badgers as Zach Walker netted 19 points, Zach Zychowski 16 and Jordan Zawada 10.
The Badgers also made a big effort to limit the scoring by STAA guards Powers and Bardowski. And they did. The duo combined for 19 points, including 16 by Powers.
We held Powers and Bardowski to combined 19 points with 11 coming in garbage time. Last game they combined for 50 of 64 points, Niagara coach Jim Hooglund said.
Niagara doubled up the Cavaliers in the first frame 18-9 as Walker fired in 5 points and Zawada 4. Mike Schmidt supplied most of the offense for STAA with 5 points, including a 3.
After building up a 28-15 halftime lead, Niagara unloaded a 19-6 third quarter surge to gain control at 47-21. Walker fired in 9 points in the run on 3 baskets and a trey while Zychowski added a pair of three pointers.
Over the final 8 minutes, STAA tried to rally with a 19-11 surge but to no avail.

Sam Koss fired in 14 for Algoma, Travis Kostichka 13, Jake Wiese and Devon Kostichka 10 each.
Gillett No Match
For Oconto 59-35
Struggling from start to finish, Gillett came out on the short end of a 59-35 loss to Oconto Saturday night. The Gillett guards had all sorts of problems with fullcourt pressure, resulting in numerous turnovers and steals.
The Tigers saw the red-hot Blue Devils open the game on a 17-0 run and were up 24-4 at the first break. Gillett managed to close the gap to 28-14 by halftime before getting outscored 31-21 over the final two frames.
Clint Long and Shane Anderson netted 12 and 10 points for Gillett.
Ocontos top scorers were Trent Mehlberg with 14 points each.
