8 Cougars Make State One of the finest mat powerhouses in the state, Coleman, continued its winning ways by capturing the Division 3 sectional title at Shawano and qualifying 8 grapplers for the 2013 WIAA state individual tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
The three-time defending state team champion Cougars saw Jensyn Schaal (120), Mason Mergener (152) and Dexter Karban (160) bring home sectional gold medals while runner-up finishes were recorded by Jackson Margis (126), Trevor Seewald (145), Isaac Nowak (195) and heavyweight CJ Pillath.
Colemans final state qualifier is sophomore Marc Lansin, who finished third in the 132 pound bracket.
What an unbelievable day! Our kids are just wrestling great at the right time of the year....have to keep it going for two more weeks. Usually at the sectional level with all the talent that was there, it never goes quite the way you would like it to go, but it was actually better than expected. To get eight wrestlers to state nobody would of predicted that, Coleman coach Kevin Casper said.
The sectional success enabled Coleman to capture the team title with 142 points followed by Edgar 86, Stratford 77 and Bonduel 62.
Sitting at 37-4 on the year, Schaal was the first Cougar to punch his ticket to state, using a trio of decisions to top the 120 pound field. Schaal opened with a 10-2 major decision over Shawn Paulson of Florence (28-9), topped Phil Sersch of Stratford (35-9) in the semifinals 7-3 before nipping Weston Cracraft of Mishicot (36-11) for the title 4-3.
Jensyn had a great day coming home with a first place finish to set himself up nicely for a first round bye at state. He wrestled very smart throughout the day, Casper said.
The next two titles came from the strength of the team...the middle weights.
Mergener improved to 41-3 on the season at 152 pounds with some impressive victories...8-0 over Dan Trimner of Athens (36-9) and then a 3:08 pin of Garrett Gunderson of Shiocton in the semis (29-11). The championship bout saw Mergener overpower Grant Wedepohl of Reedsville (39-6) in a 13-3 major decision.
Karban (30-8) duplicated Mergeners feat for top honors at 160. Karban pinned Joey Johnson of Elcho (33-8) in 5:29, beat Mason Gomm of Shiocton (30-14) in a 6-2 decision before pinning Cole Dollar of Florence (35-4) for the title in 4:39.
Mason is on a mission and simply dominated the field. Mason has a great draw at state and has an awesome opportunity ahead of him to achieve his goal of being a state champ. The finals could be a possible match up of him and Flock from Cashton who beat his brother Mike in state finals last year, Casper explained. Dexter wrestled an awesome tournament beating some top kids in the state. Dexter came in with an attitude that he wasnt going to be denied and pinned Cole Dollar from Florence who has been one of the top ranked kids in the state in the finals.
Heading the list of second place finishers for Coleman was Margis (34-11) at 120 pounds. Margis pinned Kyle Winker of Menominee Indian 4:39 but lost his semifinal bout to Devin Lemanski of Edgar (42-0) by an 8-0 major decision. Forced into a wrestleback, Margis pinned Andy Kelley of Florence, beat Alex Heiden of Stratford 9-4 before topping Luke Finnel of Mishicot 4-2 in the second place match.
After winning his opening bout, Seewald (40-6) dropped a 9-2 decision to Hayden Krueger of Crandon (42-2). Battling his way back, Seewald used a 8-4 win, a quick 0:31 pin of Trevor Potratz of Weyauwega-Fremont before pinning Wyatt Weller of Auburndale in 5:51 for second place.
Defending state champion Nowak (34-8) began his sectional performance with a 0:26 pin of Kyle Merschdorf of Wabeno-Laona (26-19) and followed that with a 5-3 decision over Dom Gunderson of Shiocton (37-8).
Nowaks lone downfall came in the first place match, getting pinned by Dondrick Tackes of Stratford (34-1) in 5:52. Nowak used a forfeit over Bill Browning of Brillion for second place.
Jackson had a fantastic day coming all the way back to take second and avenged a loss to Finnel of Mishicot who beat him twice this year, in one tough weight class. In what was one of the toughest brackets of the day, Seewald came all the way back to a second place finish. Wrestled with lot of heart throughout the day when he wasnt 100%. Isaac had a very good day, and lost in finals to a very physical boy form Stratford. As it turned out I think it is actually better that he lost because at state he is on what I consider the better side of the bracket, Casper commented.
The last Coleman wrestler to capture a silver medal was sophomore heavyweight CJ Pillath (27-17). Tipping the scales at around 210 pounds, Pillath went up against bigger opponents and still managed to finish second.
He won in the ultimate tiebreaker 4-3 over Kyle Andreae of Spencer (44-2) in round one, then pinned Emerson Hegeman of Three Lakes (40-6) in 5:24.
In the first place match, Pillath dropped a 9-7 decision to Silas Petrie of Brillion (43-1).
The kid just never ceases to amaze us. Nobody thought CJ was coming out of this sectional but nobody obviously told CJ that. He beat a kid 42-1 his first match in sudden death OT with an escape in the final 10 seconds and then turns around and pins the boy from Three Lakes who had 40 wins and been ranked 3rd at state, Casper said. In the finals CJ lost a very close match and if he doesnt get caught in a 5 point roll he would of won that one as well. Just an incredible performance.
Marc Lansin (32-10) turned some heads and picked up 11 team points with a third place finish at 132 pounds and 3 wins on the day.
Lansin beat Paul Willfahrt of Auburndale (30-13) by a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals, lost 4-1 to Austin Riehl of Shiocton (41-3) then posted a 13-2 major decision over Dalton Tietsort of Three Lakes to stay alive. Lansin followed up that win with a 8-1 decision over Boone Young of Mishicot in the third place match before getting pinned by Carter Shampo of Crandon (40-6) in 2:23.
Marc wrestled very good taking third and now has a great opportunity to place down at state, Casper concluded.
Beschta Notches Third
Place Finish, State Berth
The only other M-O grappler to earn a state berth is Lena-STAA 220 pounder Sam Beschta.
Sporting an impressive 34-6 readout, Beschta pinned Dan Erickson of Shiocton (25-5) in 3:30, lost to Hunter Kauffman 6-3 before posting a major decision 10-2 win over Grant Murray of Crandon (30-14).
In the third place match, Beschta pinned Keenan Richmond of Menominee 4:43.
Sectional Problems For
Five Crivitz Wrestlers
The Crivitz Wolverines sent five wrestlers to the sectional and none advanced.
Joe Rodriguez (29-8) had the best showing with a quarterfinal pin of James Lassa of Pittsville 1:40 before falling to eventual champion Joey Tauchen (43-2) in a 5:01 semifinal pin. In the consolation semifinals, Rodriguez got pinned by Richmond of Menominee Indians 5:14.
Tim Sotka lost twice at 120 pounds to finish 14-16 on the season, Jake Dobesh dropped his opening match at 152 for a 20-15 mark, Dan Tomaszewski dropped a pair of bouts for a 25-9 mark while heavyweight Zach Timblin (23-14) got pinned in 0:30 by Don Tourtillott of Menominee Indians in the opener.
Oconto Freshman Earns
State Trip At 106 Pounds
Going 2-2 at the sectional meet, Oconto Blue Devil freshman Elton Kelsey claimed third place to earn a state trip.
After an opening round bye, Kelsey (33-5) lost to eventual champion Dylan Willemssen of Athens (45-4) by a 4-3 decision but recovered with two wins. Kelsey topped Danny Jones of Florence (31-8) 3-0 and Austin Siolka of Bonduel (40-8) in a 7-1 decision.
In the battle for second place, Kelsey was pinned by Anthony Gliniecki of Stratford in 4:57.
