No Surprises In Opening Round

There were no surprises as the opening round of the WIAA boys basketball tournament tipped off Tuesday night across the state.

The Marinette Marines (8-15) saw their first season under coach Nick Semenas come to an end in a 82-47 road loss to Menasha in Division 2 play.

Five M-O Conference teams will compete in the regional semifinals Friday, highlighted by league champion Peshtigo (21-1) entertaining Winneconne, a 54-32 winner over Wittenberg-Birnamwood in Division 3 action.

The D-4 results saw Crivitz slip past Gillett 50-43 and will now travel to top seed Crandon, Oconto knocked off Menominee Indian 76-61 and Coleman dropped a 57-53 contest to Laona-Wabeno.

Four area teams will continue their seasons in D-5 as top seeded Wausaukee (17-6) rolled past White Lake 73-42 and will host Goodman-Pembine, a 61-51 victor over Elcho. The number two seed in the upper portion of the sectional, Niagara, had no trouble with Elcho 48-21 and entertains Three Lakes Friday.

The bottom half of the D-5 sectional saw second seed Suring (19-3) race past Sevastopol 59-35, STAA fell to Gresham 78-65 while Lena got leveled by NEW Lutheran 76-19.

-Division 2 Results-

Marinette No Match

For Menasha 82-47

In an opening round mismatch, the Marinette Marines fell behind 43-13 at halftime and never recovered in suffering an 82-47 loss to host Menasha (4-19).

The Marines had all sorts of trouble getting their offense untracked in the first half, netting 11 points in the first quarter and just two in the second.

Marinette’s lone lead came on a Derek Klegin three point shot (3-2) before Menasha took control. Using fullcourt pressure to frustrate Marinette, the Bluejays opened up a 22-11 first quarter spread then put the game away with a 21-2 run over the next 8 minutes.

In the second half, Menasha ran off a 39-34 scoring edge.

Klegin fired in 21 points to lead the Marines, 11 coming in the opening half. Austin Wright added 11 points and Nate Kallestad 6.

The Marines connected on 17 of 34 shots (50%) but turned the ball over 22 times.

Menasha was paced by sophomore Tyler Johnson with 23 points, 12 coming in the critical second quarter.

-Division 3 Results-

Oconto Falls Routed

By Freedom 83-34

The Oconto Falls Panthers saw another winless season go into the books following an 83-34 tournament loss to host Freedom.

The Panthers fell behind 23-10 at the first buzzer and were in arrears 39-11 in the second half.

Brett Schommer topped Freedom with 14 points while Alex Young fired in 11 for Oconto Falls.

-Division 4 Results-

Fischer Fuels Crivitz Win

The Crivitz Wolverines got a big night from Ben Fischer to defeat the visiting Tigers of Gillett 50-43.

Fischer led all scorers with 21 points while teammate Jake Wiedemeier turned in 10.

Gillett got 10 from Shane Anderson and another eight from Kyle Kershek in the loss.

Mehlberg Nets 24 As

Oconto Wins 76-61

Trent Mehlberg fired in a game high 24 points to lead Oconto to a 76-61 tournament win over visiting Menominee Indian.

The Blue Devils held the scoring edge in every quarter, claiming a 32-21 halftime lead. Mehlberg was red hot in the second frame scoring 10 points.

In a high scoring second half, Oconto ran off a 44-40 scoring edge.

Brady Erieau netted 13 points, Corey Herbert and Kyle Krueger 12 each while Conner Moe chipped in with 10.

Coleman Comes Up

Short Against L-W

The Cougars tried pulling off an opening upset but came up short in a 57-53 road loss to Laona-Wabeno.

Finishing the season at 2-21, the Cougars trailed 36-29 at intermission before running off a 20-12 fourth quarter surge to make things interesting.

Dominick Hansen connected for 13 points to lead Coleman while Austin Malecki and Brandon Pagel added 11 each.

-Division 5 Results-

Suring Hammers

Sevastopol 59-35

The Suring Eagles were dominant early on against Sevastopol in opening-round action, working their way to a 34-19 lead at halftime before going on to win it convincingly, 59-35.

The Eagles had several players dialed in offensively for this game. Cody Christensen paced the winning squad with 15 points, Jay Tienor 12, Dan Sweda 10 and Blake Strehlow nine.

A game-high 16 points was tallied by Sevastopol’s Bryce Birmingham.

Wausaukee Whips

White Lake 73-42

With five players in double-figure scoring territory, the Wausaukee boys put on a bit of an offensive clinic against the visiting Lakers of White Lake in regional action, notching a lopsided 73-42 victory.

A 24-10 opening frame set the table for a runaway victory and the Rangers pressed their advantage. Wausaukee got 12 points from both Austin Guarniere and Zach Orlando; Ryan Nystrom added 11 while James Kramer and Aaron Schlies scored 10 for the winners.

White Lake was led by a game-high 18 from Kris Gallagher.

Niagara Starts Fast

To Rout Phelps 48-21

A 16-0 first quarter surge was all that Niagara needed in running past visiting Phelps 48-21. The Badgers stretched the upper hand to 29-5 at intermission before running off a 19-16 second half surge.

Jordan Zawada sparked the Badgers with 16 points, Joey Swanson added 9 and Zach Zychowski 7. Zawada was at his best in the second quarter tallying 9 points, including a trey.

“Our fullcourt trapping defense lead to many turnovers and our decisive first quarter,” Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said.

Niagara connected 5 times from behind the arc, 2 by Zawada along with one each from Swanson, Zychowski and Adam Parent.

Ryan Cirese had 15 points for Phelps.

Balanced Scoring Keys

Patriots Win Over Elcho

The one-two punch of Trent Heath and Alex Whitt combined for 43 points as Goodman-Pembine eliminated Elcho from post-season play with a 61-51 win.

Heath, who surpassed the 1000 point mark earlier, riddled the Elcho defense for 23 points while Whitt added 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The Patriots overcame an 18-16 first quarter deficit to pry open a 39-33 halftime lead. Over the final two frames, Goodman-Pembine tacked on a 22-18 scoring edge.

Cavaliers Clipped

By Gresham 78-65

In a high scoring affair, host Gresham (18-5) controlled the boards to claim a 78-65 win over STAA (9-14). The Cavaliers trailed 44-32 at intermission before getting outscored 34-33 in the second half.

Kiefer Powers, the leading scorer in the M-O circuit, fired in a game high 23 points, Jameson Bardowski added 21 and Mike Schmidt 9.

Gresham, which connected on 19 of 29 free throws in the fourth quarter, was paced by Brady Hoffman with 18 points.

Lena Gets Leveled

By NEW Lutheran

Going up against top seeded NEW Lutheran (23-0), the winless Lena Wildcats were never in the game while suffering a 76-19 loss. Lena trailed 42-9 at halftime and was outscored 34-10 in the second half.

Justin Heimke paced Lena with 9 points while Joe Jagiello added 4.

NEW Lutheran saw Dakota Zinser fire in 19 points while Nathan Toenjes and Tyler Schaut added 11 each.
