Mary Chatlosh

Mary Lillian Veazey Chatlosh, 90, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17 following a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 4, 1922 to Joseph Benoit (Ben) and Margaret Noelie (Broussard) Veazey, originally of Pecan Island, La., she started life and grew up on a houseboat on the Sabine River in Orange, Tex. in the 1920's and 30's with her parents, brother and sister.

She attended Curtis Elementary, St. Mary School and Orange High School and dreamed of becoming a writer. She met the love of her life, Alfred Nicholas Chatlosh of Stephenson, Mi. and they were married on Feb. 15, 1942. While raising five children she was a correspondent for The Orange Leader from the late 1950’s through the early 1980’s covering local, school, church and social news at various times for West Orange, Pinehurst, Little Cypress and the Deweyville area. A prolific feature writer, she was well-known for her many published articles about Orange-area people and their talents.

She was also the Orange area correspondent for The Texas Catholic Herald / East Texas Catholic newspaper. She loved the Lord and was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a supporter of St. Mary School and the Legion of Mary. She was an avid organic gardener, loved craft work, drawing and oil painting and spent years gathering genealogical information and stories on both the Veazey and Chatlosh families. She enjoyed regular family visits to the Chatlosh side of the family (Chatloshes, Wangerins, Uptons, Marciniaks, and Schaefers) in the U.P. She lived her final years with a son in Beaumont, but West Orange was home.

Surviving are two sons, Tommy Chatlosh of Beaumont and Clifford (Denise) Chatlosh of Orange; a daughter, Angela Svetlik of Spring; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Chatlosh of Orangefield; 10 grandchildren; great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; eldest son, Alan Chatlosh; a sister, Verna Mae Shinnick and a brother, Joseph Ben Veazey, jr.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange, Tex. with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at St. Mary Catholic Church with interment at St. Mary Cemetery in Orange. Monsignor William Manger of St. Anne Catholic Church in Beaumont officiated. Memorial donations may be made to Southeast Texas Hospice, 912 Cherry Avenue, Orange, TX 77630.
