Arold Thomas Murphy Tom Murphy, 77, died at his home in Denver, Colo. on March 5. He was born in Marinette on July 12, 1935, to the late Grace (Utke) and Judge Arold Murphy.
Murphy was a wise teacher and born storyteller, always taking his own time. He made his mark through oration that never failed to challenge the lucky listeners be they his loved ones, friends, or colleagues. He encouraged people to do their very best in their life. He spent his early years in Marinette, under the loving eyes of his elder sisters, Jane, Pat, and Mary, and brother, Jim. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1953, and received a degree from Michigan State University in 1957. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity. He loved ideas and words. For more than half a century, SAE pledges have recited "The True Gentleman," which represented their ideals, and Murphy's. He passed these values on to his children and grandchildren.
He married Marcia Foley of Menominee in June of 1957. They had many wonderful years together and five children: John (Amy), Sheila (Ara Darakjian), Tim, Jane (Dale Lamphere) and Matt (Monica). The Murphy family lived in Milwaukee and St. Paul, Minn., where he worked at Honeywell, before being transferred to Chicago, Ill. In 1972, the family moved to Denver, Colo., where he was a principal at the former Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company, now KPMG. He enjoyed his career as a management consultant and business advisor. He loved living in Denver.
In 1983, he married Connie Nehls of Denver who with her daughter, Yvonne, son-in-law, Don Goldtrap, and children, Dylan and Desi, were a loving part of his family. He loved to laugh, to celebrate with music, and enjoyed many wonderful times during his life. He grew up singing around the piano with his family, and he and his three sons frequently sang as a barbershop quartet during family events. He played the piano, respectably, by ear. Known to lead parades around his home involving patriotic music by John Philip Sousa and homemade instruments, he loved to help his grandchildren with homework.
Survivors include by his wife, Connie; her daughter, Yvonne (Don) and her children, Dylan and Desirae. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Kamps of Marinette; his five children and two grandchildren, Aidan and Kathleen; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jane Ryan and Patricia Corry; a brother, James; and an infant brother, Robert.
On St. Patrick’s Day, 2013, an Irish wake will be held at the home of his daughter, Sheila and her husband, Ara Darakjian, in Denver.
