Oconto Falls Girls Dominate Invite

Sparked by double winner Leah Kasten in the 200 meter dash and pole vault, the Oconto Falls girls turned 6 gold medals along with a pair of seconds and 4 thirds into 156 points and the team title at their own 11-team invitational Thursday. Hilbert was second at 96 and Kewaunee third with 80 points. A pair of M-O Conference teams competed with Peshtigo sixth at 58 points and Coleman tied for 9th at 36 while Oconto was last with 14.

Kasten, a senior sprinter, won the 200 in 28.90 then added a height of 9-feet for pole vault honors. Other first place marks for the talented Panthers were freshman Bailey Wolf in the 3200 (12:03.62), Vanessa VanDenElzen 17.11 in the 100 hurdles, Carly Lemke 5’2 high jump, Jenny Spang 14’10 long jump and the 400 relay team.

Oconto Falls had a 2-3 finish in the triple jump with Spang second (30’7) and freshman Emily Kilmer third at 30’. Wolf added a third place time of 5:44.04 in the 1600 and freshman Liza Leja third in the 100 at 14.17.

Peshtigo’s lone gold medal came in the 3200 meter relay where the foursome of freshman Saige Ruleau along with sophomores Taylor Sodini, Samantha Rauch and Anna Madsen put together a 10:31.69 clocking. Second place went to Oconto Falls at 11:04.20 and included Anna Rabe, Elizabeth Donart, Wolf and Kalie Erickson.

Junior Amanda Emmes was second in the shot put with a throw of 35’0.75 and third in the discus at 99’3, Nicole Motkowski second in the high jump at 5’0, while Rauch finished third in the 800 at 2:37.19.

For the first time being outside, the girls really ran well, Peshtigo coach Rick Neumann said.

Coleman’s best effort was turned in by junior Hope Process with runner-up times in the 100 hurdles (17.47) and 300 (50.87).

Running without the services of senior sprinter Brad Neumann and distance runner Aaron Bhatoya, the results were the same for the Peshtigo boys...sixth place and 58 points. Hilbert won the meet with 151 points followed by Kewaunee 141 and Sturgeon Bay 94. Oconto Falls claimed 5th place at 66, Coleman 8th 31 and Oconto last 11.

Levi Sanborn stole the show for the Bulldogs coming up with a first place time of 17:04 in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300 at 45.36. A pair of freshmen added points as Jake Romenesko was third in the 100 (12.24) and Tyler Nault 3rd in the 3200 10:42.90.

In the field events, Zach Neumann finished third in the shot put 46’6 and fourth in the discus at 119’2. Sophomore Colin Hass was 4th in the triple jump at 36’8 while the quartet of Sanborn, Hass, Trevor Igl and Romenesko ran 1:44.34 for third place.

Running without Brad and Aaron hurt our point total. Brad is nursing a hamstring and Aaron a knee, coach Neumann said. Levi struggled in the preliminaries but ran a nice race in the finals for the win.

The Cougars were paced by CJ Pillath with a second place heave of 50’4 in the shot put and sophomore Kollin Kempka third in the discus at 123’1. Mike Carroll was 4th in the 300 hurdles at 46.10 and Dominick Hansen 5th in the 110 at 17.99.

Spencer Schulz of Hilbert won the 100 and 200 while host Oconto Falls had 4 second place medals. Mike Friedman was runner-up in the 1600 (4:48.22) and 3200 (10:22.13), Mike Fifield high jump 5’8 along with the 1600 relay team of Alex Young, Jim Malcheski, Fifield and Hunter Reed in 3:46.18.

Kingsford claimed the girls with 72 points, followed by Menominee 70, Lena-STAA 63 an Ishpeming Westwood 41.

First place winners for the Titans were Megan Roer in the 200 (28.15), Holly Blazek discus (76’6), Marlena Wagner pole vault (9’6) while Roer tied Christian Jagiello for the high jump at 4’9. Jagiello was also the runner-up behind Wagner in the pole vault.

Distance ace Emily Ellman was second in the 1600 behind Kameron Burmeister of Menominee in 5:40. Burmeister also won the 800 in 2:34.78 while Maroon freshman Tasa Walcher claimed the shot put at 30’10.

Boys results saw the Maroons pile up 124.5 points on the strength of 10 first place finishes, Kingsford was second at 85.5, Westwood 31 and Lena-STAA 16.

Bryan Hines won both hurdles for the Maroons..100 (16.3) and 300 (43.75), Shaun Sullivan 100 (11.55) and 200 (23.52), Davey Luplow 1600 (4:54.50) and 3200 (11:06.95).
