Coleman Clinches M-O Title Share

Thanks to a trio of wins, the Coleman Cougars notched at least a share of their third straight M-O Conference baseball title. Coach Kent Casper’s diamond gang topped Crivitz 5-3 Thursday before clobbering host Lena-STAA in a doubleheader Monday 11-1 and 15-2. The winning week lifts the defending state champion Cougars to 10-1 on the season and 8-0 in league play. Coleman, which has just two more conference games to play and owns a comfortable 3-game lead in the standings, can earn outright honors with a win over Peshtigo Thursday or Wausaukee Monday.

“It has been a tough spring just to get on the field, but our team leadership was a key factor early. Right now a lot of our younger players are getting confident and starting to make a difference on the field,” Casper said.

While Coleman sits atop the league standings, Peshtigo and Wausaukee share second place at 4-2 each. The Bulldogs used a 7th inning single by Derek Koronkiewicz to slip past the visiting Rangers Monday 3-2.

Coach Pat Robbins crew (5-2, 4-2) will head into a busy final week of action with 4 games slated...Thursday, May 9 at Coleman, Friday at Lena-STAA, Monday at Gillett and Tuesday heading to Wausaukee in the M-O finale.

“We are fine with those games...have enough pitching to get us through,” Robbins said. “We had a lot of positive things come out of that win against Wausaukee...defense was good, pitching sharp, hit the ball and ran the bases well.”

Coleman Knocks

Off Crivitz 5-3

Senior righthander Mason Mergener registered 7 strikeouts and scattered 5 hits over 7 innings to lead Coleman past Crivitz Friday 5-3. The reigning league co-MVP, walked 4 while giving up just one earned run.

While Mergener supplied the mound effort, a trio of Coleman swingers banged out 2 hits each. Dexter Karban drove in 3 runs with a triple and single, Jackson and Blake Margis added a single and double each. Hitting out of the 7th spot, Alex Stodola chipped in with a big two-run single in the sixth inning to snap a 3-3 deadlock.

After 3 scoreless frames, Crivitz pushed across 2 runs in the fourth on just one hit. Jake Sawinski opened the inning with a double before an error on Mergener, passed ball and a sac fly off the bat of Colton Lange scored the run. Spencer Schwartz (error) later crossed the plate on another fielding miscue.

The Cougars rallied to take a 3-2 lead in their half of the fourth as the Margis brothers singled with two outs. Both runners headed home as Karban unloaded a triple before scoring on an error.

Parker DeLosSantos singled and scored on a single by Sawinski for a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth.

The Cougars put together their winning rally in the sixth with two outs. Blake Margis doubled, Karban single and Stodola added a two-run single.

Mergener made the lead stand up in the 7th setting down the heart of the Crivitz lineup in order.

Coleman Clobbers

Lena-STAA Twice

Banging out 22 hits, Coleman claimed both ends of a doubleheader against Lena-STAA 11-1 and 15-2. Karban accounted for 5 hits and 5 RBIs, Mergener 4 hits and 5 RBIs while freshman Blake Margis tallied 3 hits and 6 RBIs.

“We hit the ball hard, pitching was excellent only allowing 4 hits in the doubleheader and our defense was very good. It was a good day on the ball field,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

In the opener, the Cougars battered a pair of Titan hurlers for 13 hits, including 3 each by winning pitcher Mergener and Karban. Coleman held a 7-0 lead after 2 innings before winning in five frames 11-1. Karban ripped a two-run double in the first inning while Mergener drove in runs during his first 3 plate appearances.

Mergener fanned 7 batters over 3 innings of work, walking one and giving up a pair of hits. Nick Sailer and Alex Stodola added one inning of relief work each.

Coleman dominated again in the second game 15-2. The Cougars jammed the plate for 6 runs in the first inning and 7 more in the second to win going away. Winning pitcher Trevor Seewald, Blake Margis and Karban slapped out two hits each. Margis drilled a two-run triple in the first inning while Karban added a RBI single. In the 7-run second inning uprising, Mergener laced a RBI double while Blake Margis, Karban and Sailer added run scoring singles.

Seewald yielded 2 hits over 3 innings with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts before Jackson Margis got the call for the final two frames.

Peshtigo Slips

Past Wausaukee

In a battle for second place, host Peshtigo used a walk-off single by cleanup swinger Derek Koronkiewicz to claim a thrilling 3-2 win. With the score deadlocked at 2-all heading into the bottom of the 7th, Peshtigo only needed two batters to pull out the win. Marcus Sharkey singled to open the inning and quickly stole second. Up came Koronkiewicz, who ripped a single to right center scoring Sharkey.

“Derek has been our most consistent hitter all year and he came through when we needed it,” Robbins added.

Koronkiewicz walked and scored Peshtigo’s first run of the game in the second inning following an error and single by Trevor Bero. Wausaukee got even in the fourth as Beau DeLaet walked and circled the sacks on singles off the bats of Aaron Schlies and Brennen Gabriel.

Brendon Thomas lashed a leadoff single for Peshtigo in the fifth and raced home on a single by Gunner Kinney.

Down 2-1 heading into the top of the 7th, Wausaukee used two hits to tie the score. Gabriel got aboard on an infield single, Zack Struve put down a bunt before Russel Smith registered a double.

Jordan Berth earned the mound win allowing 5 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings. The junior righthander fanned 11 Rangers, including 8 of the first 9 batters he faced.

“Jordan was lights out early on and threw hard,” Robbins said.

DeLaet worked 6 innings for Wausaukee before giving way to Schlies for the final frame.

Crivitz Tames

Tigers 10-3

An 8 run fourth inning was all that Crivitz needed in a 10-3 road win over Gillett Monday. The Wolverines punched out a dozen safeties in the game, including 3 by AJ Garcia and two each from Cody Wolf, Spencer Schwartz and Colton Lange.

In the 8-run uprising, 13 Crivitz hitters stepped to the plate as Lange ripped two hits, Schwartz a double while Wolf, Parker DeLosSantos, Garcia and Sawinski added singles.

Sawinski scattered 6 hits over 7 innings with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks to earn the mound win.

Derek Zahn was tagged with the loss yielding 8 runs on 8 hits over 4 innings.

-Non League Results-

Marquardt Dominates

As Coleman Rolls 9-4

Hard throwing Derek Marquardt set down 15 batters on strikes and gave up 3 hits to lead Coleman past visiting Stephenson Saturday 9-4. Marquardt struck out the side in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings while adding a pair of whiffs in the first and fifth frames.

Marquardt, Jackson and Blake Margis lashed two hits each for Coleman while Karban collected a trio of RBIs.

The Margis boys took care of the first run as Jackson singled and Blake blasted a triple.

Coleman sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring 6 runs on just one hit. Five walks, a hit batsman and a run scoring groundout by Karban did the damage.

Mitch Woulf singled and scored in the third inning before Marquardt and the Margis boys tacked on 3 straight singles in the sixth.
