Rangers Roll Into State Tourney

Blank Three Lakes 2-0 And

Rib Lake 10-0 For Sectional

Honors; D-4 Opener 8am Wed.

It has been 14 years since their last trip to the state baseball tournament, but the Wausaukee Rangers are returning to the diamond classic at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton with a full head of steam and plenty of momentum.

Notching their fourth straight post-season shutout, the Rangers overcame some wet weather conditions to capture the Division 4 sectional title with a 2-0 win over Three Lakes and a 10-0 whitewash of Rib Lake in the finals at Tigerton. Pitching has been the name of the game for the Rangers, who watched junior mound standout Beau DeLaet give up 4 hits in the win over Three Lakes while Aaron Schlies and Cole Lewandowski combined to toss a nifty two-hitter in the title game rout.

“Our pitchers threw strikes and the defense was solid behind them,” Wausaukee rookie coach Paul Moser said.

Wausaukee (15-6) will take on Greenwood in the Division 4 opener on Wednesday, June 12 at 8am. The other state semifinal will pit Lake Country Lutheran and Potosi at 10am.

The Rangers will have some company from TIMESland as Oconto also qualified for the state meet in Division 3 with a 1-0 semifinal win over Bonduel and then beat Stevens Point Pacelli 7-1 in the championship game. The Blue Devils will make their fourth-ever state appearance, the others coming in 1952, 1995 and 2003. Oconto steps into state action on Wednesday, June 12 at 1pm against either Chequamegon or Osseo-Fairchild.

The defending state champion Coleman Cougars (17-2) won’t have a chance to repeat after getting upended by Oconto 8-5 in 10 innings in the Division 3 regional finals Wednesday. The talented Cougars came into the post-season as the number one ranked team in Division 3 while suffering both of their losses this season to Oconto (10-4).

“It was a tough way to end the year, especially when we were hosting the sectionals and had an opportunity to get there. Our program has had quite a three-year run, with two appearances at state, a title and three straight M-O Conference championships. I am really proud of the boys,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

DeLaet, Wausaukee

Top Three Lakes 2-0

Needing just 89 pitches to record the semifinal win, DeLaet scattered 4 hits over 7 innings as Wausaukee prevailed 2-0. The righthander closed out the game in style, fanning two of the final three batters.

Eddy Self gave DeLaet all the support he needed with a rare leadoff inside the park homer. Wausaukee waited until the 6th to add an insurance tally as Schlies slapped a two-out single, stole second and scored on a single off the bat of Lewandowski.

Three Lakes, which beat Wausaukee earlier in the season, threatened in the fourth and sixth frames with leadoff singles. On both occasions, DeLaet escaped trouble. In the fourth, Hunter Mathison singled but was erased at second on a fielder’s choice. In the sixth inning, Riley Liebscher singled, moved to second on a put before DeLaet used a pair of flyballs to end the threat.

Rangers Rout Rib

Lake In Finals 10-0

Pounding out 11 hits, Wausaukee started strong and never let up in claiming the sectional title with a lopsided 10-0, 5-inning win over Rib Lake. The Redmen upended highly touted Rosholt 4-3 in the semifinals.

DeLaet, Schlies, Brennan Gabriel and Russell Smith collected 2 hits each while Lewandowski blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

Wausaukee jammed the plate for 4 runs in the opening inning and never looked back. Self got aboard on an infield single, DeLaet beat out a bunt, Schlies was hit by a pitch, Smith ripped a two-run double while Zach Struve added a RBI single.

The lead grew to 7-0 in the second inning as DeLaet and Smith launched doubles while Schlies and Gabriel singled.

DeLaet drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, then strolled home as Lewandowski unloaded a two-run shot to centerfield. Gabriel followed with a double, Smith walked while two errors plated the runs.

Schlies got the start for Wausaukee giving up 2 hits over 2 1/3 innings before Lewandowski earned the mound win with 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Wausaukee Rolls Past

Gresham In Regionals

Aaron Schlies fired a nifty two-hitter and his mates slugged a dozen safeties as Wausaukee rolled to the D-4 regional title with a 9-0 win over Gresham Wednesday. The regional championship improved the Rangers to 13-6 under rookie coach Paul Moser and sends them to the sectionals for the third straight year.

Schlies fanned 4 and walked 3 during a complete game 7-inning mound stint and needed 92 pitches to earn the win.

”Aaron threw a lot of first pitch strikes using either a fastball or curve...was in control from the opening pitch and really put together a nice game. Our defense played well and did not make any errors,” Moser said. “Offensively we hit the ball better the game before, but found some holes and came up with clutch hits. We made the most of our scoring opportunities.”

Leading the Wausaukee hitting attack were leadoff batter Eddy Self and Cole Lewandowski with 3 safeties each while Beau DeLaet and Zach Struve chipped in with two each. Self and designated hitter Russell Smith drove in two runs each.

With game still scoreless heading into the the bottom of the third inning, Wausaukee pushed across a trio of runs on 3 hits. DeLaet ripped a one-out double and Lewandowski followed with a two-out RBI single. An error allowed Brennan Gabriel to get aboard before Smith came through with a two-run single.

In the fourth inning, Dillon Meyers slapped a leadoff single and was joined on the sacks by Conner Kempinski, who was beaned. A wild pitch moved the runners up a base before Self punched out a single and DeLaet a sac fly.

Wausaukee upped the lead to 7-0 in the fifth when Smith struck out, but reached as the ball got away from the catcher. Struve singled and Meyers moved both runners up 90 feet on a bunt. A single by Self and walk to DeLaet produced the tallies.

Lewandowski lashed a single to open the 6th and scored on a triple off the bat of Struve, who came home on an error.

Oconto Earns Trip

To State Tourney

The Blue Devils wrapped up their 4th state trip with wins over Bonduel 1-0 and Stevens Point Pacelli 7-1 in the Coleman sectional Tuesday.

Oconto claimed the thrilling semifinal win when Blake Campshure and Brandon Baehde clubbed two-out doubles in the sixth inning.

Freshman Grant Frazer allowed 4 hits and two walks in a complete game performance.

In the finals, Tyler Trepanier yielded 6 hits over 7 innings as Oconto scored 6 runs in the sixth inning to turn back Pacelli 7-1.

Trent Mehlberg gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in the third frame with a long home run to left. In the sixth, a throwing error on a forceout at third base and a three-run double by Baehde did the damage.

Coleman Falls In 10

Inning Heartbreaker

To Blue Devils 8-5

In a game that seemed like it would never end, the Coleman Cougars saw their post-season run came to a screeching halt in the regional finals Wednesday 8-5. This game went 7 innings and then some as a trio of extra frames were needed to decide the final outcome.

Oconto scored 3 runs in the top of the 10th inning thanks to RBI hits from Teague Camps and Ricky Mattitas.

“Our kids played their hearts out, both teams had their chances throughout the game but we couldn’t get the big hit. In the 10th inning, Oconto got a couple of big hits that proved to be the difference,” Casper commented.

The Cougars banged out 10 hits off a trio of Oconto hurlers, four in the final three innings.

Seewald sparked Coleman with 4 singles while Marquardt added two singles and a triple.

Oconto punched out a dozen hits, 3 each by Tanner Pillsbury and Teague Camps. The hot hitting Camps drove in a trio of runs with a third inning two-run homer and the go-ahead run on a single in the 10th.

Freshman Grant Frazer singled and scored in the opening inning on a groundout.

Coleman came right back in the bottom of the first on walks to Seewald, Marquardt, Karban and Blake Margis while Jackson Margis reached on an error to go up 3-1.

Oconto got even in the third inning when Trent Mehlberg singled and jogged home as Camps unloaded a two-run homer. Mehlberg was ejected from the game in the 5th inning for running into Coleman first baseman Karban.

Pillsbury reached on an error in the fifth and scored to put the Blue Devils up 4-3 before Coleman saw Mergener walk and score on a single by Marquardt for a 4- 4 deadlock.

The Blue Devils regained the upper hand in the sixth when Camps singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on an error.

Trailing 5-4 heading into the 7th, Coleman rallied again. Marquardt ripped a leadoff triple and scored as Karban lashed a single. Fly balls by Hunter Stodola and Jackson Margis along with a groundout by Derick Teteak ended the inning.

After Mergener set Oconto down 1-2-3 in the 8th, Coleman loaded the bases with one out but never scored. With a chance to win the game, Marquardt sent a shot to third only to see Alex Stodola get forced out at the plate. The next hitter, Karban, was thrown out on a grounder to short.

Oconto threatened again in the 9th as Bostedt singled to open the inning but a pair of balls hit back to Mergener on the mound short-circuited the rally.

Jackson Margis drew a one-out walk in the 9th and moved to second on a bunt by Teteak, but never advanced as Alex Stodola went down on strikes to end the frame.

The 10th inning is where Oconto put together its winning rally. Kyle Krueger singled to open the inning and raced home on a triple by Camps. Mattitas followed with a RBI double while a walk to Blake Campshure and an error scored the final run.

Coleman tried to answer in the bottom of the frame as Trevor Seewald lashed a leadoff single but was erased at second base. Fly outs from losing pitcher Mason Mergener and Derek Marquardt ended the game.

Krueger earned the mound win with 3 innings of scoreless relief, walking 3 and fanning 3.

Mergener went all 10 innings for Coleman, giving up 8 runs on 12 hits with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks.

“Mason pitched all 10 innings for us and suffered only his second high school loss....both have come in the tournament in extra innings,” Casper concluded.

The strike zone was difficult to locate for the four pitchers used in the championship clash as they combined for 14 walks.
