Marinette Takes Pair From Gillett, Peshtigo Earns Split

Sweep Improves

League Readout

To A Perfect 5-0

Thanks to two more strong pitching performances, the Marinette Redbirds improved their Wishigan League readout to 5-0 with a 7-5 and 11-1 sweep of visiting Gillett Sunday. Game one saw Cody Woods record 9 whiffs and give up 5 hits in a 7-5 victory while in the nightcap Marinette sprung for 7 runs in the opening frame for a lopsided 11-1 win.

The twin killing keeps the Redbirds (9-4, 5-0) two games ahead of second place Menominee (3-1) with Channing (3-2) in third place.

Elsewhere in league play, Peshtigo split a doubleheader with Escanaba, losing 5-4 in the opener before coming back with an 11-5 win in game two. Menominee doubled up Channing 6-3 while Tri-City earned a double forfeit from Crivitz.

Games slated for this week find Peshtigo heading to Marinette Wednesday for a 6:30pm clash before the Redbirds travel to Menominee Sunday at 1pm.

Redbirds Soar Past

Gillett Twice Sunday

Pitching was key again as the Redbirds soared past visiting Gillett Sunday 7-5 and 11-1.

“We got some excellent pitching by Cody Woods in the first game and Pat Wolard in the second,” coach Nick Brukardt said. “We didn’t look good defensively in the first game but had enough offense to overcome our mistakes. In the second game, we hit the ball hard and kept Gillett from staying close.”

The opener saw Cody Woods set down 9 Firecats on strikes, walking 3 while giving up 5 runs (one earned) on 5 hits.

Marinette managed 8 hits and 5 unearned runs off losing pitcher Mason Mergener, who fanned one and walked 5.

The Redbirds struck for 5 runs in the second inning on 4 hits and an error. Jordan Rasner walked to open the frame and moved to second on a bunt by Steve Campbell. Jason Hofer followed with a single, Todd Olsen reached on an error on third sacker Trevor Seewald while Cully Falkenberg and Jordan Powers added singles. After a walk to slugger Pat Wolard, Steve Oman ripped a two-run double.

Gillett closed the gap to 5-2 in the third as Brock Gagnon walked, Mergener reached on an error by shortstop Campbell and Lucas Markiewicz singled.

After an error put Powers on base with one out in the fourth, Adam Francour doubled and Wolard added a run scoring single.

The Firecats made things interesting in the fifth with 3 runs for a 7-5 score. Cody Nielson singled, Collie Magnin waked, Mergener reached on an error and Seewald singled.

Gillett tried to threaten again in the 7th as Markiewicz singled with one out before the Redbird defense turned a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

Exploding for 7 runs in the first inning, Marinette had no trouble cruising to an 11-1 second game win. Winning pitcher Wolard aided his own cause with a 3-3 effort at the plate, including a double; Campbell added 3 RBIs while Olsen and Hofer drove in two runs each.

The early uprising saw the Redbirds bat around the order as Powers and Olsen walked before Wolard, Rasner, Campbell and Hofer lashed consecutive singles. Getting his second plate appearance of the inning, Powers added a run scoring single.

Wolard doubled and scored on a single by Olsen in the second while Chad Rasmussen and Wolard added hits in the 3-run third.

The only Gillett run came in the second inning when Derek Ziesmer walked and scooted home on singles by Nielsen and Mergener.

Wolard worked 4 innings, fanning 5, walking 3 and giving up 5 hits while Falkenberg collected an inning of scoreless relief.

Alex Ziesmer didn’t make his way out of the first inning, giving up 7 runs (5 earned) on 4 hits with 2 walks. Southpaw Cole Lewandowski yielded 6 hits and 4 runs over the final 4 frames.

Peshtigo Splits

With Escanaba

The Predators split a doubleheader with visiting Escanaba Sunday, losing game one 5-4 on a two-run homer by Brandon Gannon in the 7th inning before cruising to an 11-5 victory in the nightcap.

The opener saw Peshtigo waste a nice pitching performance by righthander Brandon Barrette, who fanned 7 and scattered 7 hits over 7 innings with three of the Escanaba runs unearned.

Jake Westphal singled and scored on hits by Tyler Marquardt and Max Hipke to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth. Peshtigo tallied 3 runs in the sixth to go up 4-3 in the sixth. With two outs, Mitch Mergener doubled, Marquardt reached on an error in centerfield while Hipke drove in two runs with a double. Joey Sparks singled to drive in Hipke with the go-ahead run.

Peshtigo held that lead until the 7th when Jared Stenson singled and walked home as Gannon unloaded a two-run homer down the left field line.

The Peshtigo bats came alive in game two punching out a dozen hits in claiming an 11-5 victory. Westphal swung the hottest stick with a double and two singles while Jake Engels and Mitch Mergener punched out two safeties each.

Five hits, an error and two balks resulted in 5 Peshtigo runs in the second inning. Westphal doubled to open the inning, while Mitch Mergener, Marquardt, Sparks and Engels singled.

A two-run homer off the bat of losing pitcher Tony Peacock got Escanaba within 5-4 in the top of the fifth.

The Predators had an answer and upped the lead to 7-4 in the fifth as Mike Mergener singled, Hipke ripped a run scoring double and Mitch Mergener a RBI single.

Taking a 7-5 spread into the sixth, Peshtigo tacked on 4 more runs to win going away. Sparks reached second when his bunt was thrown down the rightfield line. Barrette and Engels followed with doubles, Mike Mergener walked while Westphal added a RBI single.

Sparks earned the mound win with 5-plus innings of work before Mitch Mergener added 2 innings of relief help. The pair fanned one, walked 3 and hit two batters. Mergener used a key double play to get out of a bases loaded no out jam in the sixth before Engels threw out Gannon at the plate to end the game.

Menominee Slips

Past Channing 6-3

What was suppose to be a doubleheader turned into a single game as the Menominee Storm (4-2, 3-1) topped host Channing 6-3 Sunday in 5 innings before rain washed away the second game.

Brett Edlbeck gave up 2 hits and fanned 4 over 5 frames to earn the mound win.

Menominee jumped on losing pitcher Kyle Sexton for 4 runs in the first inning and never looked back. Aaron Pettit singled to open the game, stole second and scored on a single by Matt Lund. Edlbeck was hit by a pitch, swiped second and scored on a groundout.

Lund singled and scored in the third inning while Sean Budzyski drove in Kevin Betts with a single in the fifth.

Birds Battered By

Appleton Legends

Taking on the talented Appleton Legends in a Wednesday clash, the Redbirds proved to be no match in suffering a 4-0 road setback. Marinette mustered up just 3 hits against the Legend hurlers while Redbird southpaw Aaron Woods was tagged with the loss.

“We had our changes but could not come up with a key hit or two to challenge a strong Appleton team,” Redbird boss Brukardt said.
