From our readers

To the Editor:

The continued success of the Sister Cities visits from our friends in Crivitz, Germany depends on enthusiastic community involvement from our side of this friendship.

My wife Marge and I still tell our friends about our experiences during the 2008 exchange when we had two of the German guests in our home. I would NEVER have thought that our $20 Porterhouse steak was the equivalent of about FOUR $30 restaurant steaks in Crivitz, Germany  . . . or that asking for a doggie bag for two of those four steaks was considered tacky – but they understood why when they saw the portion size. (We also had to tell our guests that we don’t change into our swimming suits at the beach in Crivitz!)  It was a wonderful week of sharing our similarities and our differences. We added a few thousand miles to our circle of friends.

I’m sure others would find this exchange equally rewarding – It might be you; It might be a friend; It might be a neighbor. Even if you can’t attend our July 22 meeting, invite a friend or a neighbor. It truly is an experience you will talk about afterwards. Spread the word and help make the September 2014 visit from our Sister City friends the best one ever. Help us plan some of the activities for our friends. We hope you could serve on a committee but we also need your input as to desired activities which showcase our community.

Bob Brown, Crivitz

Secretary, Sister Cities

Dear Editor:

The 4th of July holiday is one of the best of the year. It gives everyone the opportunity to relax and enjoy the warm weather. The activities, parades and fireworks displays are key parts to this holiday. It is ashamed on how a small group of individuals can dampen the festivities with their ignorance and disrespect for others. Especially when they know that any repercussions for their actions are protected by a badge on their chest. I am speaking of the two Wisconsin DNR officers that were patrolling on Lake Noquebay Saturday evening during the Crivitz Ski Cats fireworks display.

My wife, grandson and I were on the water enjoying the display from our small pontoon boat, along with approximately 50 other boats. Normal courtesy lends most people to anchor at least 50 to 100 feet apart, as not to crowd the view of others and anchor lines that may be out. We arrived shortly before dusk and anchored about 75 yards from any of the other boats. About 10 minutes later one of the boats that was slowly trolling through the flotilla of boats started heading in our general direction. I assumed they were looking to meet another group on the water. The boat was about 50 yards away when it picked up speed and was heading for our pontoon. The boat was less than 30 feet away as I stood up to acknowledge them to slow down with all the other craft in the area.

As dark as it was they were close enough I could identify the two silhouettes in the boat. Two officers from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources patrolling in an unmarked aluminum V-hull boat. Then I saw the two foot rollers coming from the wake of their boat. I barely had enough time to have my wife brace for the impact of the waves. The rollers were strong enough to move the pontoon with two anchors out. I checked to make sure everyone was O.K. and I looked to see what these Wardens were chasing after. I assumed that they must have a real emergency to get too.

They are now bearing down on a pontoon coming in to watch the display. The running lights were on but it appeared one of the lenses missing on the bow of the boat. As if I was not upset as I was this is the straw that broke the Camel 's back!!!! I am sure that pontoon was going to out run their boat, but wait; this is Lake Noquebay for haven’s sake where are they going to run too!!!! This is not a cheap remake of Miami Vice trying to track down drug smugglers at a whopping five miles per hour!

I know a number of DNR agents and have a great deal of respect for the jobs that they do. I have never received a ticket or even a warning, but a little common sense and respect for other patrons on the lake they are patrolling would be appreciated. Is a ticket for a missing lens really worth disturbing even endangering the safety of the people they are sworn to uphold and protect!

My name is Michael Weddel,

And Yes! I am still Ticked!!
