10 In A Row For Marinette

McMahon Hurls Pair Of Victories During 5-Win Week; Next 7 Games Are On Road

With ace righthander Jake McMahon notching a pair of mound victories, the Marinette Legion gang extended their winning streak to 10 straight games. Marinette swept Sheboygan in a doubleheader, topped Peshtigo 4-1 Wednesday, blanked Menominee 4-0 in the annual M&M 4th of July clash before knocking off Oconto 6-2 in a rain-shortened affair Tuesday.

Now 17-7 on the year and 8-1 in the North Division, Marinette will play its next seven games on the road. Marinette heads to Menominee Wednesday for round three of the M&M diamond outings, Friday travels to R-S-W for a 7pm outing, Saturday takes on Wausau in a doubleheader at noon, visits Oconto Falls Sunday for a 1pm clash, heads to Green Bay Shockers Tuesday before capping the road trip with a Thursday, July 18 outing at Kewaunee County.

Marinette Meets

Shockers In AAA

Regional Opener

Marinette will meet the Green Bay Shockers in the first game of a 6-team, double-elimination “AAA” regional tournament hosted by Southwest July 25-28.

Following Marinette’s 1pm clash, AshPort goes up against the Appleton Doubledays at 4pm while the Bluejays and host Southwest meet at 7pm.

The winner of the regional tourney will advance to the state meet in Marinette July 31-August 4.

Marinette Holds Off

Sheboygan In Sweep

Marinette pulled out a pair of big non-league wins Tuesday night knocking off visiting Sheboygan 3-2 in 8 innings and 5-2.

In the opener, Aaron Benson scattered 5 hits over 8 innings with 4 walks and one strikeout.

Marinette got even at 1-1 in the fourth when Benson and Luke Kelly walked while Beau DeLaet and Ty Bebo lashed singles.

That deadlock stood until the 8th inning when Sheboygan went up 2-1 as Aaron Peterson, Carter Amundsen and Cody Weis singled.

Down to its final 3 outs, Marinette rallied. Nate Kallestad and Benson singled to start the inning. Kelly put down a sac bunt, putting the runners at second and third. After DeLaet was intentionally walked, Jake McMahon floated a single to right to drive in Kallestad. The very next batter, Bebo, ended the game with a suicide squeeze bunt scoring pinch runner Austin Wright.

The nightcap saw DeLaet give up 6 hits over 6 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Marinette took a 2-0 second inning lead as Kelly singled, Wright ripped an RBI double to left and Bebo followed with a sac fly.

In the third inning Kallestad singled and jogged home as Benson blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence for a 4-1 spread.

Bebo walked, stole second and scored on a single by Derek Klegin in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.

Benson, Klegin and Kallestad punched out two hits each for the winners.

Tyler Zietz was tagged with the loss giving up 7 hits and 5 runs over 6 innings.

McMahon, Marinette

Blank Menominee 4-0

Jake McMahon hurled a gem and the Marinette Legion team rode a solid defense effort, while doing enough on offense as well, to pick up a 4-0 win over Menominee in the annual July 4th game at Pedersen Park Thursday.

McMahon fanned 11 batters on his way to victory in this one after getting out of a jam early on that saw Menominee looking to score in the first with runners on first and third and no outs. McMahon calmly struck out the next two batters he faced before an infield fly got him out of the opening inning unscathed.

Offensive highlights for the Marinette Legion gang on the day were Derek Klegin, who went one-for two with a pair of runs scored as well as three stolen bases while Nate Kallestad and Ty Bebo each added RBIs in the win.

Marinette gave McMahon all the support he would need in the opening inning as Klegin singled, stole second and raced home on a hit by Kallestad.

In the third frame, Klegin walked, stole second and moved to third on a bunt single by Eldredge. Executing a double steal, Eldredge was thrown out at second while Klegin crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead.

Bebo ripped a two-out single in the fourth inning and scored on an error while DeLaet walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bebo in the sixth.

Jaden Kleinke tallied three hits for Menominee in the losing effort while teammate Ryan Woods added two hits.

Marinette Takes

Care Of Oconto

What was scheduled to be a doubleheader turned into a single game as Marinette knocked off visiting Oconto Tuesday 6-2 in the opener. The nightcap belonged to Mother Nature as heavy rains forced the postponement with the game to be made up on Monday, July 22 in Oconto at 5:30pm.

McMahon was dominating on the mound again, unleashing 94 pitches during a 5 2/3 inning performance. The righthander fanned 11 Oconto batters, hit one and did not issue any walks.

Marinette backed up the mound gem with a 9-hit attack, including two safeties each from Austin Belonga, Kallestad, Kelly and McMahon. Hitting out of the number 7 spot in the lineup, McMahon finished with 3 RBIs.

Marinette broke a scoreless contest with 4 runs in third inning after two outs. Eldredge singled and Benson was hit by a pitch, before Belonga, Kallestad, Kelly and McMahon registered base hits.

Oconto cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth with 2 runs on one hit. Trent Mehlberg was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single to right off the bat of Derek Ziesmer. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet with Mehlberg scoring on a sac fly to right off the bat of Blake Campshure. Ziesmer crossed the plate following another wild pitch.

Marinette gained some breathing room in the fifth scoring two more runs on two hits for a 6-2 lead. In his first game back since an appendectomy two weeks ago, Belonga drew a leadoff walk. Kallestad followed with a double before McMahon lofted a two-run single to centerfield.

With two outs in the sixth, the game was called due to lightning and rain.

Tyler Trepanier took the loss for Oconto allowing 6 runs on 9 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
