Trio Of Wins Keep Redbirds In Control

Sparked by a trio of victories, the Marinette Redbirds ran their Wishigan League leading readout to 10-1 and now own a comfortable 3 game lead. The high flying diamond flock whipped visiting Crivitz 15-3 Wednesday night then rode some excellent pitching performances from Pat Wolard and Adam Francour to a doubleheader sweep over Escanaba Sunday. The duo allowed just 7 total hits as Marinette registered wins of 5-0 and 8-0.

Elsewhere in league play, Crivitz rebounded from the mid-week beating by sweeping Crivitz Saturday 7-6 and 5-2 while Menominee took a pair of games from Gillett 4-3 and 8-0.

With three league contests remaining, Marinette owns a 3-game edge over second place Channing (5-2) and 4 games over Tri-City (4-3) and Menominee (5-4).

Wednesday Wishigan clashes this week find Peshtigo heading to Menominee for a 7pm outing while Channing visits Escanaba. In Sunday twinbills starting at noon, Menominee takes the hike to Tri-City for a doubleheader, Peshtigo travels to Gillett and Crivitz hosts Channing.

The Redbirds won’t get back on to the baseball diamond until July 24 when they entertain Appleton at 7:30pm.

Birds Bang Out 19

Hits In 15-3 Rout

Over Crivitz Wed.

Stringing together a 19-hit attack, the Redbirds had no trouble disposing of visiting Crivitz Wednesday night 15-3. The Wishigan League whipping saw Marinette score 11 runs over the first 3 innings and never look back.

Adam Francour, batting out of the number two slot, had 3 singles and a double while Pat Wolard, Ryan Johnson, Cully Falkenberg and Cody Woods punched out three hits each. Wolard flexed his diamond warclub to the tune of a single, double and three-run homer. Woods also went deep with a 3-run blast in the sixth inning. Both sluggers finished with 4 RBIs each.

In the 5-run first inning uprising, Jordan Powers got aboard on an infield single and moved to second on a bunt by Francour. Wolard and Johnson followed with RBI doubles while Falkenberg and Woods added run scoring singles.

Francour and Johnson ripped doubles in the second inning while Jordan Rasner added a single.

Singles off the bats of Falkenberg and Woods opened the third inning, while Francour added a RBI single. With two runners on base, Wolard launched a long homer to left for a 11-0 spread.

Taking a break from scoring until the sixth, Marinette added 4 runs on 5 hits. Johnson slammed his third double of the game to open the inning, Nick Brukardt got aboard on an error, Falkenberg singled and Woods homered. Francour and Wolard also chipped in with singles, but were left stranded on base.

Crivitz scored all 3 runs in the fifth on walks to Max Hanson, Scott Evosevich and Kory Weed while Bo Heinemeyer and Kyle Johnson lashed singles.

Woods earned the mound win with 6 innings of 4 run and 7 hit ball. Falkenberg got the call for a scoreless 7th and fanned one.

Making his first mound appearance of the season, veteran southpaw Jeff Baumann was roughed up with 11 runs on 12 hits over 2 1/3 innings. Cody Wolf added 3 2/3 innings of 4 run and 7 hit ball.

Gems In DH Sweep

Getting two more superb mound performances, the Redbirds rolled past host Escanaba Sunday thanks to a pair of shutouts. Pat Wolard fanned 6 and allowed just two hits in the 5-0 opener while Adam Francour took his turn on the bump and gave up 5 hits for an 8-0 second game win.

Pat Wolard and Adam Francour both pitched gems, Redbird coach Nick Brukardt said. We had some timely hits in both games and combined with excellent pitching were able to shutout Escanaba for 14 innings.

Wolard was in complete control in game one, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a single to Jared Stenson and a 7th inning single to Alex Dehaan.

Marinette gave Wolard all the support he needed in the opening frame with two runs on 4 hits. Jordan Rasner, who went 4-8 in the twinbill with 5 runs scored, reached on an error. Francour followed with a single while Jason Hofer doubled in Rasner. Brukardt and Steve Campbell closed out the opening rally with singles.

Rasner got things rolling again in the second frame with a one-out single, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Wolard.

Wolard protected that 3-0 edge until the fourth when Marinette tacked on two more runs. With one out Rasner walked, Francour singled and Wolard unloaded a double. Hofer drove in the fifth and final run with a sac fly.

In the 8-0 nightcap victory, Marinette collected 9 hits off Escanaba hurlers Dehaan and Jensen, including two each from Rasner, Hofer and Campbell (3 RBIs).

Marinette took control in the first inning with 4 runs on two hits and never looked back. Rasner singled to open the game, stole second and scored when Francour was hit by a pitch, Wolard and Hofer walked. Chad Rasmussen was beaned to drive in the second run and mark the end of the line for starter Dehaan. Campbell greeted reliever Jensen with a two-run single before Olsen hit into a fielder’s choice to drive in the final run.

Three more Redbirds flew home in the third inning on 4 hits. Hofer singled, stole second and scored on a single by Campbell. Steve Oman followed with a single, Todd Olsen RBI single and Cully Falkenberg a run scoring groundout.

Marinette’s final tally came in the sixth as Rasner singled, stole second base and scored on an one-out single by Wolard.

In his first mound start of the season, Francour fanned 4 and walked one over 7 innings.

Crivitz Claims Pair Of

Wins Over Peshtigo

Punching out 24 hits, the Wolves took both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Peshtigo 7-6 and 5-2 Saturday. Bo Heinemeyer, the second game winning pitcher, enjoyed a huge day at plate going 6-7.

Southpaw AJ Garcia got the nod in the opener and scattered 4 hits over 5 innings collecting 5 strikeouts, walking 7, beaning 3 batters and giving up 6 earned runs. Scott Evosevich picked up the save with 5 strikeouts in the final two innings while allowing just one hit.

Peshtigo got to Garcia for a run in the first inning as Jake Engels walked and crossed the plate on a bases loaded walk to Tyler Marquardt.

Crivitz answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the frame as Jordan Hardy walked, Heinemeyer and Evosevich singled (RBI) while Jake Johnston followed with a two-run double.

The Crivitz lead grew to 5-1 in the second when Dylan Hanson singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and raced home on a single by Heinemeyer.

Two more Wolves crossed the plate in the third for a seemingly comfortable 7-1 spread. Kyle Johnston singled, Max Hanson walked and Dylan Hanson followed with a two-run single.

Down 7-1, Peshtigo made things interesting in the fifth with 5 runs on 3 hits. Mike Mergener walked, Jake Westphal was beaned for the third time, Mitch Mergener and Marquardt lashed RBI singles. Max Hipke followed with a two-run single while Cody Nielson scored on the front end of a double steal.

Peshtigo got the leadoff hitter on base in the 6th before Crivitz brought in Evosevich to close things out.

Mike Mergener was tagged with the loss yielding 7 runs (all earned) on 9 hits, 7 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Heinemeyer was the star of game two collecting 3 more hits while picking up the mound win with 6-plus inning of 3-hit ball. The righthander fanned 5, walked 4, hit one and gave up a pair of earned runs.

The visiting team in game two, Crivitz pushed across 3 runs in the third inning and then turned the game over to Heinemeyer. Evosevich reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a ground ball off the bat of Kyle Johnston. Kory Weed singled in Johnston and headed home on a single by Max Hanson.

The Predators closed within 3-1 in the third when DJ Koronkiewicz singled, stole second and scored on a single by Hipke.

Max Hanson got aboard on a fielder’s choice grounder and later scored on a single by Nick Winters for a 4-1 edge in the fifth.

Peshtigo stayed within striking distance in its half of the fifth as Joey Sparks singled and raced home on a sac fly by Brandon Barrette.

Crivitz added a huge insurance run in the 7th as Garcia ripped a one-out double and scored on a single by Winters.

After Heinemeyer walked the first batter in the 7th, Evosevich was brought in and recorded another save with one strikeout.

Mitch Mergener was battered for 15 hits over 7 innings, registering 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and 5 earned runs.

Storm Claims Pair To

Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

The players on the Menominee Storm roster knew going into last weekend’s Wishigan League action that they needed a strong finish to their season if they are going to expect to be on the diamond once the playoffs kick off. Prior to their Sunday doubleheader they were on the bubble, a half game out of contention. But as Monday rolled around, the Storm found that the clouds have lifted a bit following a solid pair of performances at home in a twinbill sweep.

The first of Sunday’s games went to the Storm by way of a close 4-3 final. Brian Bell took the win on the mound for Menominee, giving up seven hits while striking out four. Matt Lund went two for three for the Storm with a double; Ryan Kruse was two for three with a double while Aaron Pettit also went two for three.

In game two it was Brett Edlbeck who earned the shutout victory on the mound for Menominee with a strong performance. Edlbeck gave up no walks in the game and allowed just four hits while striking out three.

Offensively in the second win , Petit was two for three with a pair of RBIs while Edlbeck helped his mound effort with a two for three day at the plate.
