Marinette Wraps Up North Division Honors

Tips Menominee And Oconto Falls Only To Lose Four On Road

Facing another busy stretch on the baseball diamonds, the Marinette Legion gang went 2-4 during the week to drop their season readout to 19-11, but 10-1 in the North Division.

The good news for Marinette came in an 11-6 victory over Menominee Wednesday followed by a Sunday 12-2 rout of host Oconto Falls 12-2. Marinette (10-1) wrapped up the North Division title when Oconto upended second place DePere 17-U (9-3) by a 7-0 score on July 15.

The bad news? Try four road losses. Marinette fell to R-S-W 12-10 Friday, dropped a doubleheader to Wausau Saturday 10-8 and 8-1 before getting knocked off by the Green Bay Shockers Tuesday 7-6.

Now 19-11 on the season, Marinette will close out the regular season with five outings. Marinette heads to Kewaunee County Thursday, hosts the Green Bay Bluejays and Shockers in a Saturday doubleheader, welcomes Menasha at 1pm Sunday before traveling to Oconto in a make-up affair Monday at 5:30pm.

Following the regular season finale, Marinette will step into post-season play and meet the Green Bay Shockers in the first game of a 6-team, double-elimination “AAA” regional tournament hosted by Southwest July 25-28.

After Marinette’s 1pm Thursday clash, AshPort goes up against the Appleton Doubledays at 4pm while the Bluejays and host Southwest meet at 7pm.

The winner of the regional tourney will advance to the state meet in Marinette July 31-August 4.

Marinette Completes

M&M Series Sweep

With 11-6 Victory

Overcoming a first inning 1-0 deficit, Marinette erupted for 7 runs in the fifth inning to clip Menominee 11-6 and complete the 3-game series sweep. Hot hitting Derek Klegin sparked the Marinette attack with 4 hits, Nate Kallestad added 3 hits and 3 runs, Luke Kelly two hits while Jake McMahon drove in 3 runs with a triple.

Ty Bebo went the distance for Marinette allowing 7 hits and 5 walks over 7 innings with 7 strikeouts.

Doubles by losing pitcher Ryan Woods and Landen Maccoux put Menominee on top 1-0 in the first inning.

Marinette came back in the second as Kallestad doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on the front end of a double steal.

That 1-1 deadlock lasted until the fifth inning when the teams combined for 12 runs. Marinette scored 7 in the top of the frame, sparked by a bases loaded triple off McMahon’s bat, two-run single by Cody Tessmer and base hits by Klegin, Scott Eldredge and Kallestad.

Menominee quickly answered in its half of the fifth with 5 runs on 4 hits. Chris Kelly and Derek Reiswitz lashed RBI singles, Mark Pulver a run scoring double while Jaden Kleinke added a base knock.

Holding that 8-6 edge, Marinette tacked on 3 more runs in the sixth on singles by Klegin, Aaron Benson, Kallestad and Kelly.

Woods took the loss for Menominee allowing 11 runs on 13 hits with 5 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Woods and Maccoux punched out two hits each for Menominee.

Mistakes Prove Too

Costly For Marinette

Marinette saw its win streak was snapped at 11 victories Friday night as Rothschild-Schofield-Weston weathered a big game from Klegin to come out on top 12-10.

The Post 39 shortstop clocked in for four hits in six plate appearances, hitting a double and a triple, both of which brought in a run but it wasn't enough as R-S-W scored five runs in the fifth inning to overcome the 9-7 lead that Marinette had built at the top of the same frame.

Other Marinette highlights in the offensively-slanted contest were Scott Eldredge, who knocked in three runs on a three for six day at the plate and Austin Belonga, going three for four at the plate and also drove in three.

Post 39 outhit R-S-W 15-12 but stranded 13 base runners in the nine-inning contest.

Doubleheader Loss

For Marinette Gang

In the first of Saturday's two losses 10-8, Marinette out-hit Wausau 14-12, a collection of offense highlighted by a two-RBI performance from Tessmer, a three for five game from Klegin with an RBI; Eldredge went two for four with a double and an RBI while Kiefer Powers was two for three with an RBI.

Austin Wright was tagged with the loss giving up 8 earned runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. Klegin and Eldredge added relief work.

Game two Saturday saw Marinette gang struggle to get its usually potent offense going as Beau DeLaet, went one for two while McMahon and Tessmer each went one for three in the 8-1 setback.

DeLaet lasted 2 1/3 innings allowing 7 runs on 8 hits with one walk and one strikeout. Klegin and Nate Kallestad mopped up over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Marinette trailed 8-0 after three innings and scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a single by Wright.

Marinette Earns Share

Of North Division Title

The Post 39 crew recovered from a pair of losses against Wausau on Saturday to pummel Oconto Falls 12-2 on Sunday and lay claim to move into a tie for first place in the Fox River Valley League North Division. Marinette can win the league title outright with a victory against Oconto next Monday.

After the double dose of disappointment in non-league play on Saturday, Marinette got off to a hot start against Oconto Falls on Sunday, bringing in six runs in the opening inning before following up with a four-run second.

Jake McMahon gave up just one hit on his way to the win on the mound, fanning nine while walking just two and giving up one earned run in five innings of work.

Walks Prove Fatal In

7-6 Loss To Shockers

Marinette hurlers issued 10 free passes in suffering a 7-6, 8-inning loss on the road to the Green Bay Shockers Tuesday. Starter Belonga walked 7 and fanned 2 over 6 innings before giving way to Klegin for the final two frames. The duo yielded 10 hits, 10 walks fanned 3 and allowed 7 earned runs.

Eldredge ripped a single and double for 3 RBIs while Kallestad added a two-run first inning single. Eldredge ripped a bases loaded two-bagger in the fourth to give Marinette a 5-1 edge.

The Shockers claimed the win in the 8th as Adam Wentland lashed a two-run single.

Wentland also picked up the win with one inning of two-hit ball.
