Predators Enjoy Winning Week For 6-5 Wishigan League Mark

Making their biggest surge of the season, the Peshtigo Predators recorded a trio of wins this past week and moved into a third place tie with Tri-City in the Wishigan League standings. The young and talented Predators knocked off Menominee 11-2 Wednesday night then took a pair of games from host Gillett Sunday 14-4 and 5-2.

The triple win pushes Peshtigo to 6-5 in league play, four games behind league leading Marinette (10-1). Channing is second at 6-4 followed by Tri-City and Peshtigo.

Getting the weekend off, the Marinette Redbirds have three games remaining on the Wishigan calendar...hosting Tri-City Sunday in a doubleheader at noon and Channing on Wednesday, August 7. Peshtigo will entertain those same Channing Railroaders Sunday in its league finale at 1pm.

The league playoffs are scheduled to be held in Menominee on Sunday, August 11.

Predators Take Pair

From Gillett Sunday

With their bats punching out 26 hits, Peshtigo had no trouble taking a doubleheader from host Gillett Sunday 14-4 and 5-2. Jerit Zeitler keyed the offensive assault with 6 hits in 9 plate appearances while Brandon Barrette added 2 hits, 3 walks and 5 runs. Jacob Westphal added plenty of punch with 3 hits and two runs, including a solo homer in the opener.

Mitch Mergener picked up the mound win in game one with 3 innings of work before giving way to Joey Sparks for the final 4 frames. The pair scattered 5 hits, walked 3 and fanned 6.

Peshtigo owned a 5-1 lead after two innings before breaking the game open with 6 runs in the 7th frame.

Singles by Barrette, Mike Mergener and Zeitler keyed the first frame uprising while an error and triple by Mike Mergener upped the margin to 5-1.

Westphal homered to lead off the fifth inning while singles by Joey Sparks (bunt), Max Hipke and Zeitler pushed the lead to 8-2. Sending 10 batters to the plate in the 7th inning, Peshtigo got singles from DJ Koronkiewicz, Cody Nielson, Barrette, Hipke and Westphal along with a double by Zeitler.

Game two saw Mike Mergener get the starting nod, yielding 3 hits with 6 walks and 8 strikeouts.

A walk to Barrette followed by a double from Mike Mergener and singles off the bats of Westphal and Zeitler gave Peshtigo a 2-0 first inning lead. Zeitler and Mitch Mergener singled and scored in the third frame for a 4-0 spread.

Peshtigo’s final run came in the fifth as Zeitler ripped a leadoff double and scored on a double by Nielson.

Escanaba Tops

Channing 7-2

In a Wednesday night affair, Escanaba rode a nifty 5-hitter from Jon Bintner to a 7-2 win over Channing. Bintner walked 1 and fanned 9 to claim the 9-inning mound victory.

Brandon Gagnon topped Escanaba with a pair of doubles and a single while Tony Peacock slapped two doubles.

Kyle Sexton took the loss allowing 10 hits, 7 earned runs, walking 4 and fanning 5 over 8 2/3 innings.

Crivitz Earns Split

Against Channing

In a well played Sunday afternoon doubleheader, the host Wolves registered a split against Channing, losing game one 2-1 before bouncing back in the nightcap to claim an identical 2-1 victory.

The opener saw Mike Miller of Channing and Bo Heinemeyer hook up in an old-fashion pitchers duel. Both hurlers were dominating as Miller fanned 7 while giving up 4 hits and 3 walks over 7 innings. Heinemeyer was equally as impressive, scattering 8 hits, walking one and fanning 14 Railroaders. Only one of the two runs Heinemeyer allowed was earned.

Channing combined 8 hits with a trio of Crivitz fielding miscues.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when Kelly reached reached on a throwing error by shortstop Scott Evosevich and later scored on a single off the bat of Andy Herro.

The Railroaders chugged their way to the eventual winning run in the sixth inning when Garth Budek doubled and raced home on a single by Kyle Holsworth.

Heading into the bottom of the 7th trailing 2-0, Crivitz made things interesting. Kory Weed singled to get things started, moved to second on a walk before racing home on an error by second sacker Kelly Reed on a grounder by Dylan Hanson.

The nightcap was also dominated by the men on the mound as Cory Dacheff and Cody Wolf matched pitches. Dacheff finished with 8 strikeouts, 3 walks, 4 hits and two earned runs over 6 innings. Wolf scattered 5 hits over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts and two walks. Evosevich picked up the save, fanning two and yielding a pair of hits in the 7th.

Crivitz went up 1-0 in the opening inning as Jordan Hardy singled and scored on a double to left center by Evosevich.

Channing answered in its half of the second as Barry Holsworth singled, stole second and third before heading home on a grounder off the bat of Garth Budek.

That 1-1 deadlocked lasted until the bottom of the sixth when Crivitz pushed across the game winner. Jake Johnston singled and made his way to third base as Kory Weed and Kyle Johnston drew walks. With one out and the Channing infield playing in, Dylan Hanson ripped a hot shot between short and third before getting thrown out at first. Even though Hanson made an out, the good news saw the grounder score Jake Johnston for a 2-1 lead.

Needing just three outs to seal the win, Crivitz brought in Evosevich to close things out. But Channing wouldn’t go down quietly. Kyle Holsworth slapped a single to open the inning while Dacheff struck out trying to bunt. After a single by Matt Witannen, Evosevich whiffed Miller for out number two before getting Barry Holsworth to fly out to centerfield to end the game.

Predators Weather

The Storm 11-2 Wed.

Peshtigo scored early and often Wednesday at Spies Field and came home with an 11-2 Wishigan League victory over the Menominee Storm.

The Predators got things going in the first frame as Jerit Zeitler knocked in a run for the visitors. Peshtigo picked up another score in the second as Menominee starter Billy Betts, unaware of a recent change to pitching rules in the league, was called for a balk as he looked to make a play from the mound to eliminate a scoring threat.

It was 3-0 by the time the Storm got on the scoreboard in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Ryan Kruse to bring in Brett Edlbeck, who reached on a single to left field.

Peshtigo responded to the Storm score by putting the screws to the home team in the fifth frame. The Predators got the bats going and badgered Betts into throwing a wild pitch that brought a run across, bringing about the decision to replace the starter for Sean Budzynski. The reliever failed to get out of the inning unscathed as Tyler Marquardt blasted a single to left field with the bases loaded to bring in a pair of runs, making it 6-1.

A groundout RBI off the bat of John Nerat scored Matt Lund in the ninth for Menominee's only other run.

Peshtigo's Brandon Barrette picked up the pitching win with six innings of work that saw him strike out six batters while giving up just five hits for one run.

Storm Gets A Split

Against Tri-County

Menominee evened its Wishigan League record to 6-6 (7-7 overall) with a one-for-two outing in Negaunee as they recovered from a 4-2 defeat in the first game to come from behind in the second contest for a convincing 9-2 victory. After falling behind 1-0 following a Tri-County score in the third,

Matt Lund put Menominee on top for good with a two-run homer in a big fifth inning for the Storm. Tony Gromala and John Nerat both notched RBI doubles for Menominee in that crucial fifth.
