County Fair Board Seeks More Vendors
With the 2013 Marinette County Fair Aug. 22-25 members of the Fair Board with putting the four-day celebration together are ramping up their efforts to ensure everything from the Wausaukee Fairground turf to the Wi-Fi wireless service is ready to go.
The Marinette County Fair Board met Tuesday, July 30 at the fairgrounds to tie up some of the loose ends. As board members arrived for the meeting, board president Dave Gross and member Dave Hambone Heinz were repairing a leaky water pipe. The men put their efforts on hold, temporarily for the start of the meeting at 7 p.m.
We had a very productive last couple weeks up here, Gross told the board. From lawn mowing, to putting up fencing, to painting, to grounds cleanup, crews have been busy getting the grounds prepared, he explained.
He also announced that Marinette County Breakfast on the Farm donated $500 and Coleman Future Farmers of America (FFA) donated $200 to help fund the fair. Every donation helps, Gross said, before he opened up discussion on a key remaining expense - contracting security for fair weekend.
After discussion, the board voted to go with two officers between the hours of 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights at a cost of $130 per hour. However, reducing the number of paid security hours was strongly considered. Id rather have them here later at night, said Heinz, explaining that is when the potential for trouble is highest.
On Thursday and Sunday, auxiliary police will be in charge of keeping the grounds safe, Gross explained. We didnt have much problems last year in the campground
, Heinz said. But they (auxiliary police) at 5 oclock were out there already and kind of made their presence known. And they went out there several times, Gross added. I know money is always an issue, but to save $130
I would just stay with 6 to 2, Gross said.
Board member Rich Kempka then announced he had all of the superintendents and judges lined up for the fair. He also said an upcoming livestock meeting was scheduled for Monday, Aug. 5 in the Town of Beaver.
With the majority of the fairs vendor and entertainment contracts secured, landscaping in front of the office was discussed. I talked to Parthies (Landscape and Stone), and to sod that would be about $250, Gross said. The board approved the expense.
Members decided to again offer reduced and free fair admission for Elderly Services and Wausaukee Enterprises (WE), respectively.
Concerns regarding the replacement of aging fencing, resolution of parking issues, and the hiring of garbage pickers were approved.
The board also approved spending $250 to repair four broken glass cases located in the clothing building. Along the same lines, a motion was passed to authorize Kempka to use the fair boards Menards card to purchase supplies. Right now Im the only one on the Menards card, we should have somebody else, suggested Gross.
The board authorized the purchase of food and goods for the FFA stand and approved the purchase of Wi-Fi for fair week.
The next Marinette County Fair Board meeting is Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Wausaukee Fairgrounds. In the meantime the board is looking for volunteers to help make sure all of the remaining projects are complete by the time the fair opens.
Next Saturday is a workday again, every Saturday up until the fair - whenever you can get up here, get up here
theres a lot of stuff to do yet. The more we get done the better - the less we have to do later, Gross stated.
After the meeting, board member Carry Lea also pointed out any extra volunteers would be extremely helpful. The board is still seeking additional vendors as well.
