Wishigan Playoffs Set

Redbirds Seek

4th Straight

League Sweep

With the regular season concluded, the playoff picture is set in the Wishigan League and will feature the top 4 teams in the circuit. First place Marinette goes after its fourth straight Wishigan League season and playoff sweep and will be joined by Channing, Tri-City and Menominee.

Post-season play begins on Wednesday, August 7 when Tri-City visits Channing for a 5:30pm outing while Marinette will travel to Menominee for its first game on Sunday, August 11.

Depending of which team wins, the finals could either be held in Marinette or Menominee. If Channing wins Wednesday, the finals will be played on Wednesday, August 14 in Marinette. If Tri-City wins, the finals will be played immediately after the Marinette-Menominee clash Sunday, August 7 in Menominee.

The final week of league play saw Menominee make its way into the playoffs with a 7-4 win over Crivitz while Tri-City fell to Channing 9-8 Wednesday and bopped Peshtigo 4-1 and 4-3.

Peshtigo Topped

By Tri-City Twice

Managing just 4 runs in a Saturday doubleheader, Peshtigo came out on the short end 4-1 and 4-3.

In the opener, the Predators managed 5 hits against winning pitcher Prestin Hutchins, who fanned 11 and walked one. Mike Mergener punched out a single in the first frame and a two-bagger in the sixth.

Tri-City took a 1-0 second inning lead when Eric Beauchanp singled and scored on singles by Tony Zampese and James Larsen.

Peshtigo got even in the third as Brandon Barrette walked, moved to second on a bunt by Mitch Mergener before scoring on an error.

The deadlock lasted until the fifth when Tri-City tacked on 3 runs to take control. Spencer Larsen walked, Hunter Larsen doubled before a free pass to Adam Brugman and Beauchamp getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded produced one run. A groundout and single by Zampese sent the other runs home.

Mitch Mergener worked 5 frames to absorb the loss with relief help coming from Barrette.

The nightcap saw Peshtigo go up 1-0 in the first inning as Jake Engels got aboard on a fielder’s choice and raced home when Mike Mergener ripped a double.

Brugman walked and scored following a bunt and an error in the second inning before Peshtigo rallied for two runs and a 3-1 edge in the fourth. Jake Westphal was hit by a pitch, Mitch Mergener doubled and Tyler Marquardt added a two-run single.

Cody Berg doubled to open the fifth and scored on a wild pitch to get Tri-City within 3-2. Down a run heading into the 7th inning, Tri-City rallied for a pair of tallies. With one out, Zampese walked and James Larsen got beaned. A groundout and walk loaded the bases before Hunter Larsen saw his hot shot get misplayed by shortstop Mike Mergener resulting in two runs.

Joey Sparks was tagged with the loss allowing 5 hits and 4 runs while first game starter Hutchins (4 innings) and winning hurler Berg shared the mound chores.

Menominee Storms

Into Wishigan Playoffs

The Menominee Storm, presented with a win-or-go-home-until-next-year scenario Sunday afternoon in Crivitz, got some solid play both at the plate and on the mound as they earned a spot in the Wishigan League playoffs with a 7-4 win over the Wolves.

After a quiet start to the game, Menominee got things going in the third as Sean Budzynski quickly reached second by virtue of a base hit and a stolen bag. He was brought across later in the inning after Brett Edlbeck blasted a shot to left center, tallying an RBI double.

Matt Lund followed suit with a double of his own to bring Edlbeck home before scoring himself on a Ryan Kruse single.

Not satisfied with its 3-0 advantage, the Storm continued to play like there was no tomorrow and, in the fifth, they managed to press their lead to 6-0 after Landon Maccoux lashed a run scoring single and Derek Reiswitz a two-run double.

Crivitz answered in its half of the fifth inning with one run. Jordan Hardy ripped a single, Jeremiah Greshow walked and Cody Wolf added a RBI single.

Menominee stretched the lead to 7-1 in the sixth as Aaron Pettit and Matt Jacobs singled while Edlbeck added a sac fly.

With the game wining down, Crivitz plated one run in the 8th and two more in the 9th. Kyle Johnston doubled and scored on a single off the bat of AJ Garcia while Wolf (walk) and Kory Weed (hit by pitch) crossed the plate in the 9th.

Menominee’s Brian Bell picked up the win on the mound with six innings of work in which he gave up just three hits while striking out 10 and five walks.

Edlbeck and Lund added relief help giving up 3 hits and 3 runs.

Bo Heinemeyer took the loss allowing 7 earned runs on 10 hits over 6 innings with Wolf added 3 innings of shutout ball.
