Illegal Garbage, Unkept Properties Plague MI Town

One objective the Town of Middle Inlet Board is committed to achieving in the coming is cleaning up the town. That fact became evident when issues surrounding unkept properties and illegal garbage dumping took center stage at the Town Board meeting on Thursday, Aug. 8.

On the topic of illegal garbage dumping, Town Chairman Richard Wade reported that a No Dumping sign had been posted on Lewis Road, where he says there have been problems with people dumping their trash in the past. Board Supervisor Anthony Magerowski noted that illegal trash and refuse dumping has also become an issue at the wayside along Highway 41. Magerowski indicated that he would notify the town’s refuse collection firm, Great American Disposal Co. (G.A.D.), to schedule a pickup at the wayside. Signage to discourage the illegal practice is also being considered, he said.

On a somewhat related matter, Wade addressed an issue concerning several problem properties in the town. According to Wade, approximately 8 to 10 such properties have been identified as non-compliant with the town’s building code, the majority in the Sweetheart City area.

Wade said the town’s building inspector recently sent letters to the offending property owners requesting permission to enter and examine their properties and the structures on it. We’re just waiting for the replies from the registered letters we sent out, then we’ll go from there, he said. A member of the audience asked what exactly constituted a problem property, Wade explained that they are properties with buildings falling in; unsafe buildings with animals being kept in them; parcels where the lawn isn’t being mowed; etc.

Hopefully we can do something before the snow flies, that’s what we’re going to aim for, the chairman said. He added that an update on the on the status of the non-compliant property issue will be presented at each month’s board meeting.

The Chairman also provided a status report of current and upcoming street projects including the routine patching taking place on Cemetery, Wasko and Lake roads and the Sweetheart City Road project scheduled to begin Aug. 9. At all times the road (Sweetheart City) will be open, it won’t be shut down, so people will be able to get in and out of there, Wade assured.

It was also announced that due to budgetary constraints, resealing of the fire department parking lot has been postponed until 2014.

Street signage issues also drew a fair amount of attention at the meeting. In our ordinances we have some roads that are supposed to have speed limits posted on them - all of those (signs) have been put up, the chairman explained, before turning the conversation to a matter involving stolen signs.

Believe it or not, we had a Moonshine Hill road sign stolen, Wade said, drawing laughs from the large crowd in attendance. How? one audience member asked. Somebody crawled up that pole and undid all the bolts out of the sign … they had to spend some time doing it, Wade replied with a laugh.

To prevent that happening in the future, the new sign guy put the bolts back in and put a spot weld on it so they can’t get it off anymore, he explained, adding so now if they want the sign they literally have to wreck it to get it off. Wade said Sheriff Jerry Sauve was notified of the sign pilfer and reminded that there was a $1,000 reward out for information leading to recovery of the stolen Moonshine Hill sign.

In other news, a resolution appointing Supervisor Roger Leick to serve as Town Weed Commissioner was unanimously approved by the board.

Clerk/Treasurer Charles Stanek reported the fire department had recently received donations of $75 from the Station House Restaurant in Coleman, and $50 from Bob’s Wrecker Service in Wausaukee.

Fire Chief John Coddington and Assistant Fire Chief Jim Swanson reminded all in attendance that the Fire Department Open House/Picnic will take place Saturday, Aug. 17. If anybody would like to donate baked goods for our bake sale we’d appreciate it, Swanson said, adding that’s usually a very successful part of the picnic. Anyone wanting more information about the picnic, donating baked goods, or purchasing tickets, please contact Swanson at 715-854-3137.
