THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
From our readers
Letter to Editor:
After reading the comments from Sheriff Sauve in the Peshtigo paper where he blames the economy for a sudden drop in revenues from tourism, instead of the massive police presence, and the Gestapo style random stopping of autos leaving restaurants and bars. There are many annual events such as car shows, tractor parade, fishing contests, motorcycle fund raisers for charity, all being cancelled because of the task force in the High Falls area. People are pulling their RVs and travel trailers out of the High Falls campgrounds and are heading to Oconto County, where the sheriff does not believe in a police state.
I, like many senior citizens, call the Town of Stephenson home. We like to go out to dinner and, yes, have a drink. From what I am hearing from business owners and their customers, the Sheriff will never be reelected. I, for one, cant wait!
When Sheriff Sauve said his officers must stop a car every 40 minutes for no reason, looking for a drunk driver, maybe someone should remind him that this is America. Whatever happened to the Constitution and Bill of Rights?
The Marinette County Board had better wake up. There is more than 20 million dollars at stake in tourism. Many of my friends have changed their vacation plans for friendlier areas of the state. Just go online and see what is being said about the High Falls area. If you want a DWI, go to High Falls. The Sheriff said families will come here because they feel safer. I say to him, get off of the cool aid! Spend the taxpayers money fighting crime instead of chasing cars like a dog! The next election cant come soon enough!
I live on the north side of Menominee, Mich. on Highway 41. All day Thursday I heard the distinctive thunder of Harley motorcycles heading south. I assume to attend Milwaukees 110th anniversary celebration of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. From what I understand, Harley owners and riders, who come from all walks of life and all parts of the world, gather for one common reason...the love of a truly American icon, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Harley people, and other bikers, are your friends and neighbors. They do much to serve their communities. They respect members of our military. They form honor guards at funerals of military personnel to shield deceased veterans and their family members from the misguided religious zealots who delight in the death of our soldiers. They hold rallies to raise money to support community members with medical and other problems. They are always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
I salute these free spirits and their belief in the American Dream
I would like to clarify information stated in the article DNR To OK Permit For Cattle Farm in the August 28 issue of the Times. The proposed animal waste discharge of the Fendryk Farm to the surface and groundwater within the Town of Beaver would actually be to the Beaver Creek Watershed. For Administrative purposes, the DNR lumps the Beaver Creek in with the Little Peshtigo River watershed (located in the Town of Pound). These are separate waters which do flow to the main Peshtigo River. However the Beaver Creek watershed has much more Trout water, and I hope these expanding farms and their increased waste discharges do not damage this valuable resource.
