Menominee Rolls Past Milwaukee 62-12; Eyes Outright GNC Honors

Racing to a 48-6 halftime cushion, the Menominee Maroons had no trouble routing host James Madison of Milwaukee Thursday night 62-12. Sporting an 8-0 readout, the Maroons will wrap up the regular season Friday night with a road trip to Marquette and the GNC finale. A victory would lock up the league title for the 3-0 Maroons as they prepare for the Michigan post-season. James Madison finished the year with a 3-6 record.

“The team executed well and being diverse, we had a lot of success running and throwing the football. Defensively our unit did a great job containing them,” Maroon coach Joe Noha said.

Menominee dominated from start to finish and piled up 384 yards in offense. Coach Noha’s troops made their way to the end zone 4 times in the opening frame and extended the upper hand to a six touchdown spread by intermission.

The Maroons needed 5 plays and two minutes to take the lead for good as James Brown scored the first of his 3 teedees on a 5 yard run. Evan Pohlmann booted the extra point for a quick 7-0 lead. Justin Brilinski, who finished with 120 yards rushing, busted loose for 32 yards to open the march, Devon Harris snagged a 20 yard pass and Brown bolted 26 yards before racing into the end zone from 5 yards out.

A pass interception by Devon Harris set up teedee number two. Devon Barley hauled in a 21 yard pass from Brilinski while Harris capped the march with a 16 yard jaunt.

Milwaukee closed the gap to 14-6 when Damian Lee returned the ensuing kickoff to the Maroon 15 and scored on the next play.

The next five touchdowns went on Menominee’s side of the scoreboard.

Brown closed out the first quarter with scoring runs of 3 and 21 yards for a 28-6 edge.

Menominee’s offensive explosion continued in period two as Barley hit paydirt from 5 yards out, Nate Marcin hauled in a 5 yard scoring pass from Brilinski and Colin Nerat blasted his way into the end zone on a 2 yard run.

After Milwaukee tacked on a third quarter score, the Maroons capped the effort with two teedees in the final 12 minutes. Marcin shook free on a 12 yard run while Aeron Forsberg scored from 29 yards out.

For the second consecutive week, Pohlmann finished with 8 extra point kicks.

Brilinski finished with 12 carries for 120 yards while completing 6 of 10 passes for 116 yards. Brown added 5 rushes for 81 yards and Nerat 6-38.

Looking ahead to the trip to Marquette (5-2, 2-1) Friday and a shot at the outright GNC title, Noha said..."Marquette is a good football team with a talented quarterback and a couple of nice wideouts. They beat Kingsford 24-0, so it should be quite a battle. Hopefully we’ll get a win and accomplish a couple of our goals as the GNC champs and team of the year. The weather could also be a factor as they are calling for snow and cold temps all week.”

Already earning a Michigan playoff berth, Menominee will find out on Sunday how they will be seeded and their opponent.

“If we win out, we should end up as the top seed in our district and could host up to 3 games. We just need to play hard and give it our best shot,” Noha concluded.
