6 Area Teams Remain Alive
Coleman Hosts Bonduel In D-3 Matchup
The opening round of the WIAA volleyball tournament took a toll on area netters as 7 teams were dealt season-ending defeats. Suffering first night setbacks were Marinette and Peshtigo in Division 2, Crivitz in D-3 while Wausaukee, Niagara, Lena and STAA dropped D-4 contests.
Oconto Falls, the top seed in D-2, drew an opening round bye and will host Seymour (8th seed) in the semifinals Thursday.
In Division 3, Coleman earned a bye as the top seed and entertains Bonduel Thursday while Oconto dusted off Menominee Indian and welcomes Laona-Wabeno, which eliminated Crivitz in 3 games.
Division 4 action saw a pair of M-O Conference teams move on as did Goodman-Pembine of the Northern Lakes circuit. Suring swept Oneida Nation, Gillett turned back STAA while Goodman-Pembine knocked off Phelps in 3 games.
Regional semifinal pairings in D-4 on Thursday at 7pm find Bowler (4) heading to Suring (1) , Gresham (3) travels to Gillett (2) while Goodman-Pembine (2) hosts Elcho (6).
Regional finals will be played at the highest seed remaining on Saturday. Sectional play will take place October 31 and November 2 with D-2 in Oconto Falls, D-3 at Crivitz and D-4 in Gillett.
The WIAA state tournament will take place November 7-9 at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

By Denmark In 4
A successful 2013 volleyball campaign came to an end Tuesday in Denmark for the Peshtigo Bulldogs, who fell in regional tournament action 15-25, 15-25, 25-23, 14-25.
"We were hoping to be the surprise underdog tonight," said Peshtigo head coach Lynn Tonn Kostreva. "We were in it the whole night. The girls were ready and it showed-they left everything on the floor, they never gave up. I'm really proud of them. I'll really miss the desire and enthusiasm of these girls."
Carly Dietrich turned in six kills and 21 digs; Nicole Motkowski also had six kills to go along with a block, seven assists and 11 digs; Teja Tonn finished with four aces, four kills, a block and eight digs while Maizie Reif turned in five kills and 16 digs.
Marinette Falls To
The Marinette Marines were swept by host Luxemburg-Casco in the tourney opener Tuesday 25-7, 25-12 and 25-5.
Maggie Liebeck paced the winners with 16 kills and 5 aces, Lexi Kinnard 10 digs and 6 aces while Amanda Oeder dished out 19 assists.
-Division 3 Results-
Blue Devils Sweep
The Oconto Blue Devils opened up tourney play with a 25-10, 25-8 and 25-10 sweep of visiting Menominee Indian. Laken James had 10 kills for the Blue Devils, Emily Shallow 23 assists and Carlee Behnke 5 kills and 6 aces.
Second seeded Oconto, which finished as the state runner-up in Division 3 last year, will now host Laona-Wabeno in a regional final Thursday at 7pm. Laona-Wabeno swept Crivitz to advance.
Crivitz Swept By
The Wolverines proved to be no match for host Laona-Wabeno Tuesday falling 25-8, 25-20 and 25-13.
Mesa Geiter collected 10 kills and 7 aces for the winners, Ceanne Harrison 6 kills and 4 blocks while Holly Spaude added 19 assists and 5 kills.
Jen Kempka had 14 assists for Crivitz while Vikki Neumann added 4 kills and 3 digs.

Past Phelps In D-4 Opener
The tall and talented Goodman-Pembine netters, seeded second in the regional, barely broke a sweat while disposing of visiting Phelps 25-5, 25-7 and 25-14.
Rachel Stankevich and Courtney Goyak had a big games at the net with 9 kills and 4 aces each while Gabrielle Johnson added 7 kills.
The Patriots will now host Elcho, a winner over Niagara, on Thursday at 7pm in the regional semifinals. The finals will be played on Saturday at 7pm, probably at top seed Florence.
The Suring volleyball squad took a victory in Division 4 regional action Tuesday, shutting down Oneida Nation 25-9, 25-18, 25-6.
Calley VanBellinger led the Eagles with seven digs, 12 kills and seven aces; Kelsey School turned in five assists, five digs and an ace while Breanna Tienor had seven assists and a dig.
The Gillett girls got a good fight out of the STAA netters Tuesday as they needed four games 25-9, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18 to collect the win and move on.
Brianna Lemirande turned in 14 kills, three blocks, two assists, two digs and three aces to lead Gillett. Jessica Anderson had 25 assists, four digs and three aces while Taylor Kohls chipped in with 11 kills and a dig.
For STAA, Alyssa Hornick finished with five kills, a block and 10 assists; Riley Schultz had 11 kills, a block, two assists, three digs and two aces while Linsey Hannon scored three kills, two assists, four digs and two aces.
Badgers Come Up
Short Against Elcho
The third seed Niagara netters battled hard against sixth seed Elcho but couldn't quite win a game as they were upended 21-25, 21-25, 15-25.
Brooklyn Wolosyn led the way for Niagara with 14 kills and a dig; Shelby Borchardt notched 44 digs while Shanna Nordell finished with 11 assists and one dig.
To Three Lakes
The Wausaukee netters ended the season with a playoff loss on the road to Three Lakes by a final of 14-25, 18-25, 15-25.
Crysta Clark led the Wausaukee offense with six kills to go along with her four assists; Kaylor DeLaet had three aces, two kills and eight assists while Marissa Huber had four aces, two kills and a block.

The volleyball season ended for the Lena Wildcats on opening night of the tournament with a 25-18, 18-25, 24-26, 25-12 and 15-11 loss at Bowler.
