Sex Offender Is Residing In Amberg
The Marinette County Sheriff Department reported Friday, Oct. 18, that a sex offender convicted in Shawano County has been released from prison and is residing in the area of N41900 Old Highway 141 in the Town of Amberg.
He is Michael J. Robinson, 51, described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 6-feet 2-inches tall and weighs 283 pounds.
The Sheriff Department released the information pursuant to state statute which authorized law enforcement agencies to inform the public of a sex offenders release when in the discretion of the agency, the information will enhance public safety and protection.
According to the release, his criminal history places him in a classification level that reflects the potential to reoffend. He is not wanted by authorities at this time. The notification is not intended to increase fear, rather it is believed that an informed public is a safer public.
The sheriff department has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may or may not live. However, as long as he is on probation the Department of Corrections must approve of his residence.
Sex offenders have always lived in area communities, the sheriff department reported. It was not until the passage of Megans Law in 1997 that law enforcement knew where they were living and could pass that information onto the public. Citizens abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated. Further such abuse could potentially end law enforcements ability to do community notifications. The only person who wins if a community notification ends is the sex offender as they derive their power through secrecy.
The Marinette County Sheriff Department is available to help set up block watches and to provide useful information on personal safety. Contact the department at 715-732-7600 with information regarding current criminal activity of this, or any other offender. The call will be welcomed.
According to the release, Robinson was convicted of child enticement, first degree sexual assault of a child, second degree sexual assault of a child and fourth degree sexual assault in Shawano County. The victims were minor children.
He was convicted on April 19, 1991 after being found guilty of the charges by a jury. He was sentenced May 28, 1991 to 18 1/2 years in prison. He is on probation until October 2023 and is required to register as a sex offender for life. He is not to have unsupervised contact with minors, not to consume alcohol or drugs and is not be in taverns, bars or liquor stores.
