Warren W. Hoyer

Warren William Hoyer, 92, of Spring Green, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Greenway Manor in Spring Green. He was born on July 21, 1921, to William and Florence (Philip) Hoyer in Waukegan, IL. The family moved to the Spring Green area in 1938 and he graduated from Spring Green High School in 1939. He farmed with his dad until 1942 when he joined the US Army. A B29 mechanic, he was honorably discharged in 1945.

On Oct. 6, 1945 he married Laurel June McClay. The couple farmed in Wyoming Valley until he was appointed Spring Green postmaster in 1960, retiring in 1981. After retirement, he worked at Lands End in Dodgeville for 11 years. Very active in the community, he served on the Iowa County Ag Committee for a number of years; Iowa County Board of Supervisors (1955 1961); Iowa County Selective Service Draft Board (1956-1976); Hillside School Board (1954-1955); Town of Wyoming chairman for 6 years; Town of Wyoming treasurer for 6 years; Town of Wyoming election official for over 25 years; active member of American Legion Post No 253 for over 50 years; member of Spring Green Lions Club for over 50 years, serving as president in 1966 and as treasurer for over 21 years. He was also a member of Spring Green Masonic Lodge since 1961; member of River Valley School Board of Canvassing for 30 years; member of the Wyoming Valley United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for over 50 years; serving on the Spring Green Fire Board for 16 years; the head of Iowa County Ag Census 1959; working for the US Census in 1990 and 2000; was a 9 gallon blood donor; was on the River Valley School District Forestry Committee (2004-2005); member of the National Association of Postmasters Retired, serving as vice- president in 1990; member of Sauk County Postmasters, serving as chairman in 1965 and 1966; member of Board of Directors of Greenway Manor since 2008; and an inductee of the Ted Lins Wall of Honor in 2008.

In 2011 he was honored by the town of Wyoming by having July 16 proclaimed as “Warren Hoyer Day”. Family, church and community were always important but he also found time for as much fishing as he could. He will always be remembered as having a “commonsense’ attitude when approaching any topic/project and was always the “go-to-guy” for historical information of the Wyoming Valley area.

Survivors include two sons, Larry (Linda) Hoyer of Barron; Robert (Deenie) Hoyer of Crivitz; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Laurel Hoyer; infant daughter, Susan; and brothers, Clifford and John.

Visitation was Friday, Oct. 25 at Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home in Spring Green, from 4 to 7 PM. The funeral service was held at the Wyoming Valley Church at 11 AM on Saturday, Oct. 26 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Rich Estrem-Fuller officiated with burial in the Spring Green Cemetery where military graveside rites were conducted by the Spring Green American Legion Post #253.

Memorials may be made to Greenway Manor, Spring Green. The Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home in Spring Green assisted the family with arrangements.
