Issue Date: November 21, 2013
Neumann And Berth Combine For 27 Points
The three-time defending M-O Conference champion Peshtigo Bulldogs opened the 2013-14 boys basketball season on a winning note whipping visiting Marinette 45-20 Tuesday night. It wasnt a pretty start for either team but the Bulldogs were able to rely on their stingy defense to limit an inexperienced Marinette team to just 6 first half points in the non-conference clash.
Fielding a starting lineup of five seniors, Peshtigo opened the game on an 8-0 run and was never threatened. Jordan Berth, the reigning player of the year in the M-O, got things started with a 3 point play while Zach Neumann drilled a jumper and Gunner Kinney a three-pointer for that 8 point bulge.
Marinette broke into the scoring column at the 3:05 mark of period one as Davon Malone connected on a trey. Berth tacked on two more free throws with 2:41 remaining for a 10-3 edge at the first break.
Period two was more to Peshtigos liking, a 13-3 blitzing for a comfortable 23-6 halftime edge. Peshtigo continued to shake off some early rust and 5 fouls in the opening 3 minutes of period two before Neumann burned the Marine defense for 7 points in the frame, including a trey with 27 seconds remaining. Neumann canned a jumper at the 2:54 mark followed by a pair of charity tosses while Berth hit two free throws with 1:30 left for a 20-5 spread. Nearly a minute later, Neumann got free and fired in that three-pointer to key the 17 point halftime cushion.
Continuing to control the tempo of the game, Peshtigo owned a 9-8 edge in period three as Neumann and Kinney connected for 4 points each before closing out the game with a 13-6 surge in the fourth quarter. During the final 8 minutes, the Bulldogs watched Neumann, Berth and Levi Sanborn toss in consecutive buckets to push the upper hand to 40-14 with 4:37 remaining.
Neumann finished with a game high 17 points, Berth added 10 and Kinney 9 for the winners.
Jake Holley topped Marinette with 6 points on a pair of third quarter treys while Marcus Maguire and Brian Klumb tallied 5 points each.
Peshtigo claimed the jayvee game 39-37 in overtime behind 16 points from Tyler Marquardt while also coming up victorious 38-30 in the frosh outing.
Coleman No Match
For Blue Devils 73-37
Visiting Coleman gave Oconto a battle for a quarter before coming up on the short end of a 73-37 season opening setback.
Jumpers by sophomore Blake Margis gave the Cougars leads of 2-0 and 6-5 only to see the taller Blue Devils go on a 14-0 scoring surge to take control.
Oconto used a second quarter press to force numerous turnovers along with the strong inside play of 64 Conner Moe and 63 Kyle Krueger to go up 30-17 at halftime. The Cougars did manage to close within 10 points late in the second quarter when Austin Malecki dropped in a pair of three point shots.
Continuing to apply fullcourt pressure, Oconto went on a 9-0 run to open the third quarter and outscored the Cougars 43-20 in the second half.
Moe sparked Oconto with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Brady Erieau added 11 while Tanner Pillsbury and 64 sophomore Sawyer Koch chipped in with 10 points each.
Austin Malecki tossed in 13 points for Coleman, Zach Zeitler 9 and Margis 6.

The Suring Eagles made the varsity coaching career of Jim Keeffe a success, edging host Laona-Wabeno 32-29 Tuesday night. Replacing the retired Gary Regal, Keeffe saw his troops rally from a 17-14 halftime deficit with an 18-12 second half surge.
Dillon Kempen topped Suring with 10 points, including 4-6 free throws in the fourth quarter, Josh Vollmar added 9 and Tyler Fisher 8.
Suring struggled at the free throw stripe making 12 of 26 tosses, but managed to connect on 7 of 11 in the final 8 minutes.
Mike Gilpin fired in 8 points to lead Laona-Wabeno, Ryan Brauer 6 and Cooper Chrisman 5.
