Peshtigo Captures 4 Titles, Runner-Up Tourney Finish

Pins At Heavyweight



Claiming four individual titles and a trio of runner-up medals, the Peshtigo Bulldogs finished in second place at the Brillion Invitational Saturday.

Omro won the meet with a score of 321.5 followed by Peshtigo 274, Shiocton 264.5, Brillion 243.5, Shawano 148, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol 118, Two Rivers 110.5 and Winneconne 0.

We took second as a team and everyone earned points.... had 7 wrestling in the finals with 4 champs, coach Warren Howard said.

Capturing gold medals on the day for Peshtigo were Bryan Shevy (7-3) at 132 pounds, Hunter Madden (9-1) at 138, Shane Marquardt (9-1) at 160 along with unbeaten heavyweight Andrew Johnston (10-0).

Coach Howard’s grapplers also took home a trio of second place finishes in Bryan Krouth 8-2 at 106, Damien VanSleet 5-5 at 113 and DJ Messenger 8-2 at 145.

Following a pair of opening byes, Shevy won by pins over Adam Miller of Shiocton 1:04 and Shawn Bell of Shawano 1:11 before nipping Jason Timm of Omro in overtime 4-2.

Madden followed with the gold at 138, earning a bye and wins over Tanner Greenwood of Two Rivers, Jordon Roth of Brillion and Matt Wiegand of Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol. In the finals, Madden posted a 13-4 major decision over Jacob Doolittle of Omro (12-3).

Marquardt needed four pins to make his way into the finals topping Artem Fink of Omro 1:59, Mitchell Nackers of Shiocton 1:53, Alex Behnke of Brillion 3:10 and Ben Glime of Shawano 1:20. In the championship bout, Marquardt cruised past Behnke of Brillion again 11-2.

Johnston dominated the competition in the heavyweight class, chalking up 4 pins on his way to the title. After getting a first round bye, Johnston whipped Macallister Cashell of Brillion in 0:29, topped Damon Braatz of Shawano in 0:25, overpowered Alex Dailey of Omro 1:03 before capping off his performance with a 1:49 effort over Andrew Browning of Brillion.

Bryan Shevy won in overtime over Omro’s Jason Timm, who was 13-0 coming into the match. Bryan wrestled a great match getting a takedown in overtime. His record was 2-3 coming into Brillion after a tough weekend at Seymour last week...wrestled well all day, Howard explained. At 138 pounds, Hunter Madden had only 5 points scored on him all day. Shane Marquardt had 4 pins and 1 major, wrestled very aggressive. Our heavyweight Andy Johnston had 4 pins and won the pinners award.

Second place medals went to Krouth at 106 with a 3-1 mark, including a title match loss to Cody Eckstein of Omro in 3:02.

Damien VanSleet used two byes and two wins before getting pinned by Raymond Herb of Shiocton in 1:29.

Messenger (8-2) muscled his way through the 145 pound bracket with a 4-1 record. Messenger pinned his own team mate Colin Heckel in round one (1:53), Eduardo Cavallazzi of Brillion in 1:26, 13-3 major decision over Collin Mirkes of Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and 8-3 over Austin Clark of Omro in the semifinals. Heading into the first place match, Messenger gave Austin Riehl of Shiocton (5-0) all he could handle before falling 1-0.

At 145 pounds, DJ Messenger lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to a state place winner from last year. Last week he also lost 1-0 to number one ranked wrestler in the state. DJ is much improved from last year, Howard commented.

Other finishes for the Bulldogs included Nadine VanSleet 5th place 120, Heckle fourth 145, Tyler Brissette fifth and Tyler Schaetz 7th at 152, Paul Lemke 4th 195 and Cam Lepkowski 5th 220.

The Crivitz mat men collected 93 points Saturday at the Rebel Invitational to finish the day eighth out of 17 teams in attendance, behind Cedar Grove/Belgium in seventh with 104.5. Reedsville was the overall points winner with 212.

The best finishes for Crivitz were second place medals earned by Danny Tomaszewski at 182 and heavyweight Austin Ducaine.

Danny Tomaszewski (10-1) brought in 22 points for the Wolverines after a forfeit, 3:10 pin of Travis Moon of Norway and a 7-3 decision over John Dennee of Crandon. In the title bout, Tomaszewski suffered his first loss of the year, 6-2 to Tyler Schuh of Reedsville (9-1).

The Wolverines got 20 points in the 285 division from Austin Ducaine (4-2) as he beat John Rupel of Tomahawk 4-3 and Charlie Wilson of Crandon 8-2 to make it all the way to the championship match. In the finals, Ducaine got pinned by Jordan Brandt of Reedsville in 0:53.

Nicholas Chapman (9-2) accounted for 17 team points and a third place finish after defeating Norway 's Taylor Bonetti by a 4-3 decision.

Crivitz earned 6th place points from Jordan St. Germain at 106 and Matt Tomaszewski (6-5) at 195.

Bill Retza snared five points at the 160-pound division, Nick Timblin took three points at 145 pounds; Luke LaCroix turned in seven at 138 after wins by pin over wrestlers from St. John 's Northwestern and Elcho; Tim Sotka had four points at 126 pounds.

The Coleman Reserve Varsity squad finished in 13th place with 49 team points.

Abraham Nowak (3-1) paced the young Cougars with a third place finish at 195 while Josh Pillath (4-1) was fifth at 160.

Pins To Whip Esky


Coming with up seven pins, the Cougars knocked off host Escanaba Thursday 54-21. Despite forfeiting 3 weight classes, Coleman claimed 10 of the 11 bouts wrestled on the mats.

CJ Pillath used a reversal to go up quickly 2-0 and got his mates rolling with a 2:20 pin of Mohammed Hogue at 215 while Donovan Salewski needed 2:33 to work over Bryant Beem.

After Devin Schulte fell behind 4-0 in period two and lost 10-6 at 103, followed by a forfeit, Coleman used a forfeit win by Jordan Blanchard at 119 and a 2:53 pin by Lonnie Basinski of 2:53 at 125 to go up 24-9. Basinski trailed 4-2 at the first break before recovering to get even and the eventual pin.

Marc Lansin sandwiched a 3:15 pin at 135 in between a pair of forfeits before Coleman closed out the match with 5 straight wins. Jackson Margis bolted to a 6-0 lead, saw Kaleb Rahoi rally within 7-5 with 0:50 remaining before claiming the 145 bout 10-5.

Trevor Seewald pinned Teddy Peippo in 1:03 at 152, Dexter Karban barely broke a sweat in putting Travis Heller on his back (0:30),Kevin Lansin whipped Hunter Sedlar 6-0 at 171 and Alex Stodola capped the night with a 5:57 pin of Cory Chenier at 189.

Crivitz Turns

Back Crandon


In a closely contested match, Crivitz used pins by Luke LaCroix, Dan Tomaszewski and Tim Sotka to turn back visiting Crandon Thursday 33-24.

LaCroix took care of Brandon Torsenson in 18 seconds at 138 before Crandon reeled off three straight wins to got up 15-6.

Nicholas Chapman got Crivitz back on track with a 7-4 decision over Deven Groff at 170 while Tomaszewski collected a 1:04 pin of John Denhee at 182 for a 15-15 deadlock.

Later in the match, heavyweight Zach Timblin lost to Charlie Wilson 9-3 before forfeits were awarded to Jordan St. Germain at 106 and Hunter Tate at 113 for a 27-24 Crivitz lead.

The final bout wrestled saw Tim Sotka take care of Jarod Roberts at 126 in 1:06 with double forfeits at 120 and 132.

Sturgeon Bay


Registering five pins on the night, the Peshtigo Bulldogs knocked off Sturgeon Bay for a 54-24 road victory.

Bryan Shevy, Hunter Madden, DJ Messenger, Tyler Schaetz and Shane Marquardt recorded pins. The Bulldogs also took advantage of forfeits awarded to Brian Krause, Cameron Lepkowski and Andy Johnston.
