Peshtigo Captures 4 Titles, Runner-Up Tourney Finish

Johnston Pockets 4

Pins At Heavyweight

Claiming four individual titles and a trio of runner-up medals, the Peshtigo Bulldogs finished in second place at the Brillion Invitational Saturday.

Omro won the meet with a score of 321.5 followed by Peshtigo 274, Shiocton 264.5, Brillion 243.5, Shawano 148, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol 118, Two Rivers 110.5 and Winneconne 0.

We took second as a team and everyone earned points.... had 7 wrestling in the finals with 4 champs, coach Warren Howard said.

Capturing gold medals on the day for Peshtigo were Bryan Shevy (7-3) at 132 pounds, Hunter Madden (9-1) at 138, Shane Marquardt (9-1) at 160 along with unbeaten heavyweight Andrew Johnston (10-0).

Coach Howard’s grapplers also took home a trio of second place finishes in Bryan Krouth 8-2 at 106, Damien VanSleet 5-5 at 113 and DJ Messenger 8-2 at 145.

Following a pair of opening byes, Shevy won by pins over Adam Miller of Shiocton 1:04 and Shawn Bell of Shawano 1:11 before nipping Jason Timm of Omro in overtime 4-2.

Madden followed with the gold at 138, earning a bye and wins over Tanner Greenwood of Two Rivers, Jordon Roth of Brillion and Matt Wiegand of Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol. In the finals, Madden posted a 13-4 major decision over Jacob Doolittle of Omro (12-3).

Marquardt needed four pins to make his way into the finals topping Artem Fink of Omro 1:59, Mitchell Nackers of Shiocton 1:53, Alex Behnke of Brillion 3:10 and Ben Glime of Shawano 1:20. In the championship bout, Marquardt cruised past Behnke of Brillion again 11-2.

Johnston dominated the competition in the heavyweight class, chalking up 4 pins on his way to the title. After getting a first round bye, Johnston whipped Macallister Cashell of Brillion in 0:29, topped Damon Braatz of Shawano in 0:25, overpowered Alex Dailey of Omro 1:03 before capping off his performance with a 1:49 effort over Andrew Browning of Brillion.

Bryan Shevy won in overtime over Omro’s Jason Timm, who was 13-0 coming into the match. Bryan wrestled a great match getting a takedown in overtime. His record was 2-3 coming into Brillion after a tough weekend at Seymour last week...wrestled well all day, Howard explained. At 138 pounds, Hunter Madden had only 5 points scored on him all day. Shane Marquardt had 4 pins and 1 major, wrestled very aggressive. Our heavyweight Andy Johnston had 4 pins and won the pinners award.

Second place medals went to Krouth at 106 with a 3-1 mark, including a title match loss to Cody Eckstein of Omro in 3:02.

Damien VanSleet used two byes and two wins before getting pinned by Raymond Herb of Shiocton in 1:29.

Messenger (8-2) muscled his way through the 145 pound bracket with a 4-1 record. Messenger pinned his own team mate Colin Heckel in round one (1:53), Eduardo Cavallazzi of Brillion in 1:26, 13-3 major decision over Collin Mirkes of Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and 8-3 over Austin Clark of Omro in the semifinals. Heading into the first place match, Messenger gave Austin Riehl of Shiocton (5-0) all he could handle before falling 1-0.

At 145 pounds, DJ Messenger lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to a state place winner from last year. Last week he also lost 1-0 to number one ranked wrestler in the state. DJ is much improved from last year, Howard commented.

Other finishes for the Bulldogs included Nadine VanSleet 5th place 120, Heckle fourth 145, Tyler Brissette fifth and Tyler Schaetz 7th at 152, Paul Lemke 4th 195 and Cam Lepkowski 5th 220.
