Marines Tripped Up By Oconto Falls; Sport 1-5 Readout
It was a tough week for the Marinette Marines and coach Nick Semenas as a pair of Bay Conference setbacks dropped their cage mark to 1-5. Marinettes troubles began with a 56-28 thrashing at the hands of highly touted West DePere Friday and continued Tuesday with a frustrating 59-47 loss to visiting Oconto Falls.
The victory by Oconto Falls ended a 28-game losing skid and improves the Panthers to 1-4 on the season.
Marinette will head to Menominee for round one of the the annual M&M hardwood battles on Friday, December 20 starting at 7pm. The second M&M clash is slated for Monday, February 3 on the Marines homecourt.
Marinette Falls To
West DePere 56-28
Going up against one of the Bay Conferences hardwood powers, the Marines found themselves outgunned Friday night against against the West DePere Phantoms 56-28.
Marinette, currently working its way through a particularly rough stretch of the regular season schedule, was trailing 22-7 after the first quarter of play and, down 32-16 at halftime, was never able to catch up.
Marcus Maguire, Garrett Waloway and Brian Klumb each scored six points to pace the Marines.
Marinette also came up short in the jayvee game 61-33 as well as the freshman outing 62-35.
Third Quarter Troubles
Dooms Marines 59-47
Being held scoreless in the third quarter was too much for Marinette to overcome in falling to Oconto Falls Tuesday 59-47.
Marinette started slow and faced an 8-1 first quarter deficit before closing within 30-28 at halftime. Things got worse in the third quarter as Oconto Falls held a 9-0 edge to take a 39-28 lead into the final 8 minutes. Trying to rally down the stretch, the Marines couldnt make up the deficit as Oconto Falls connected on 13 of 19 free throws to notch their first win in two years with a 20-19 spurt.
Taylor Starzynski fired in 13 points to lead the Marines and Marcus Maguire added 9.
Riley Gruetzmacher netted 12 points for Oconto Falls and James Salscheider 10.
Marinette claimed the jayvee game 62-50 while also coming up victorious in the frosh outing 62-36.
