Edward C. Zahn, 74, passed away at Oconto Hospital Saturday, Dec. 28.
Born June 7, 1939 in Menominee, MI. to the late Alvin M. and Helen F. (Sieber) Zahn, he graduated from Peshtigo High School in 1957 and attained his Wisconsin Cheese Makers license at the age of 17. After graduation, he was employed as a cheesemaker at Elm Dairy Co-op in Coleman, working with his father. In April, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Tonn. A year later he became employed as cheesemaker for County Line Cheese Co. where he worked until 1989, purchasing a building in Oconto to operate Z Cheese Shoppe until the summer of 2012 when failing health caused him to retire. During his younger years he and two young men from his neighborhood formed a polka band and played at weddings, showers and family reunions. He became a fire warden for the DNR in County Line until 1989. He had been active in the Oconto Jaycees for more than 15 years, served as a state officer and was a member of the JCI and international Jaycee organization.
He enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, was active at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in the Town of Grover, serving in various positions at the Church. He was currently a member at Zion Lutheran Church, Peshtigo.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marlene; two sons, Gary (Jolene) of Oconto and David of Coleman; two daughters, Patti (Jim) Henrickson, of Dallas, Tx. and Lori (Scott) Plach, of Appleton; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four brothers, Rev. Allen (Linda) Zahn, of Elkhorn; Charles (Linda) Zahn, of McGregor, Ia., Rev. Larry (Judy) Zahn, of Alpharetta, Ga. and Ron (Brenda) Zahn, of Phoenix, Az.; five brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Duane (Sandy) Tonn, of Lake Geneva, Karen (Brian) Toole and Dianne Stewart, both of Oconto, Terry (Kathy) Tonn of Galesville and Dennise and Ben Hunt of Grove City, Oh. and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Richard Tonn and Keith Tonn.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at Zion Lutheran Church in Peshtigo from noon until time of services at 4 p.m. with Pastor Luke Myslik officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in St. Johns Cemetery in Grover. Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
