MVP Heath, Patriots Repeat At Lena; Peshtigo (7-1) Earns Split

Sparked by the play of senior guard Trent Heath, the Goodman-Pembine Patriots repeated as champions of the 35th annual Lena Holiday Tournament over the weekend. The Patriots improved their season mark to 8-1 by defeating host Lena 60-36 in the semifinals Friday before taking care of Oshkosh Valley Christian 70-36 in the title match Saturday.

The championship victory marked the second straight year Goodman-Pembine knocked off Valley Christian for top honors, besting them 77-62 in 2012.

Host Lena (1-7), sporting a roster of talented young cagers, came out on the wrong end of setbacks to Goodman-Pembine and Fond du Lac Homeschool Christian Athletic Association (FHCAA) 55-28.

In other holiday hardwood tournament action, the Peshtigo Bulldogs split a pair of games against Bay Conference teams at the Shawano Shootout. Now 7-1, Peshtigo tipped Hortonville 51-40 in the opener at the Kress Center Friday before falling to Luxemburg-Casco Saturday in overtime 62-59.

The Gillett Tigers made their way into the Elcho Tourney finals before losing to the home team 42-32. Gillett whipped Palmyra-Eagle 56-45 in the semifinals.

-Lena Holiday Tournament-

Goodman-Pembine

Levels Lena 60-36

In Semifinal Clash

In a semifinal mismatch, the Goodman-Pembine Patriots combined a halfcourt trap defense with a balanced scoring punch to turn back host Lena in the semifinals 60-36.

Alex Whitt topped the Patriots with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. Three of his shots came from behind the arc. Austin Glanzer and Trent Heath chipped in with 13 points each.

Sophomore Matt Marquardt, standing at 5’7, fired in 12 points for Lena, Nash Haney and Ben Keller added 8 points each.

Trapping the smaller Wildcat ball handlers as they crossed the mid court line, the Patriots raced to a commanding 13-2 first quarter lead and held the upper hand throughout. Whitt drilled a trey and tossed in 6 points in the early run, Heath hit a three while Jacob Garrelts added a pair of buckets for a 16-8 lead. Keller canned two short jumpers to keep Lena close.

Continuing to apply pressure and force turnovers, the Patriots let loose with a 20-7 surge in the second frame. Glanzer came off the bench for 9 points, Whitt added 5 and Heath 4 as the Patriots had their way passing the ball over the top of the Lena zone.

After a bucket by Haney and a three pointer from Marquardt got Lena within 25-13 (5:12), the Patriots went on an 8-0 run to pry open a 33-13 cushion. Heath got things started with a jumper, Glanzer worked his way in for a pair of layups and Garrelts turned a steal into an easy bucket.

Marquardt canned his second trey of the game in period three and added a 12-footer while Haney found the touch on a pair of jumpers as Lena owned an 11-10 third quarter edge. Unfortunately for the Cats it wasn’t enough as they still trailed 46-26.

Over the final 8 minutes, the Patriots tacked on a 14-10 edge to win going away. Heath opened the quarter with a jumper for a 48-29 spread only to see Lena cut the deficit to 48-33 on a field goal by Marquardt along with bucket and two free throws from freshman Hunter Borchert.

Any hopes of a late rally for Lena were turned away when Goodman-Pembine unloaded another 8-0 run on baskets by Heath, Glanzer, Whitt and Garrelts to go up 56-33 with 2:21 remaining.

The other semifinal clash saw Valley Christian of Oshkosh tip Fond du Lac Homeschool Christian Athletic Association (FHCAA) 53-51.

Balanced Attack Sends

Patriots To Repeat Title;

Lena Cagers Fall 55-28

With four players making their way into double figure scoring, the Patriots successfully defended their reign as the Lena Tourney champion with a 70-36 rout of Valley Christian. The same two teams clashed in the finals last year with the Patriots prevailing by 21 points.

Saturday night in Lena, the Patriots raced to a 29-9 first quarter lead and were never threatened to claim the championship. Glanzer got the Patriots rolling with 12 of his 16 points in the opening 8 minutes, Heath added 7 points including a trey while Garrelts and Whitt chipped in with 4 each.

Goodman-Pembine kept the scoring pedal pressed to the metal in period two, unloading a 16-7 run to enjoy a comfortable 45-16 halftime lead. Garrelts found the mark for a trio of buckets, Heath hit a three and Randall Bose 4 points.

With the outcome no longer in doubt, the Patriots capped their winning weekend with a 25-20 second half surge. Heath keyed a 19-11 third quarter edge with 9 points while Glanzer and Whitt added 4 each.

Tourney MVP Heath finished with a team high 21 points, Glanzer added 16, Garrelts 14, Whitt 11 and Bose 6.

Valley Christian (0-8) saw Joe Schettle and Mikey Dunn net 12 points each.

In the battle for third place, Lena came out on the short end of a 55-28 score to FHCAA. Lena never got its offense rolling, falling behind 30-9 at halftime before getting outscored 25-19 over the final two frames.

Nash Haney sparked Lena with 10 points, Riley Marquardt added 6 while Matt Marquardt and Dalton Anderson netted 5 points each.

Drew Dauster popped in 14 points to lead FHCAA.

-Shawano Shootout-

Bulldogs Knock Off

Hortonville In Opener

Putting together a 30-20 second half run, the Bulldogs slipped past Hortonville 51-40 in their opening game at the Kress Center Friday. Peshtigo held a slim 21-20 halftime lead before unloading second half surges of 15-6 and 15-14.

Zach Neumann paced Peshtigo with 19 points and 4 rebounds while Jordan Berth added 10 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Bulldogs connected on 17-38 shots (45%), including 7-15 from behind the arc.

Hortonville added 16-42 shooting (38%) with just 3 of 16 shots falling from three point range.

AJ Woller and Gunner Kinney chipped in with 6 points each for Peshtigo while Brendon Thomas added 5.

Peshtigo Rallies, But

Falls In Overtime 62-59

After falling behind 35-27 at halftime, the Bulldogs rallied to get even at the end of regulation 54-all before falling to Luxemburg-Casco Saturday morning in overtime at the Shawano Shootout 62-59. The loss was the first of the season for the Bulldogs (7-1).

Jordan Berth collected a double-double for Peshtigo with 17 points and 10 rebounds, all coming on the defensive end. Senior guard Zach Neumann added 17 points and 3 assists, Darius Dohl 7 points and 5 rebounds while Logan Noffke chipped in with 6 points and 3 rebounds.

The Bulldogs connected on 21-48 shots (44%), 13 of 24 shots coming from beyond the arc (54%). Berth went 7-12 from the field and 2-2 from three point land and Neumann 5-10 on threes. Peshtigo was outrebounded 25-24 and dished out 15 assists.

Carson Falk peppered the Bulldog defense for a game high 23 points, Dave Vlotho added 19 points and Caleb Willems 8.

Three point shots by AJ Woller, Dohl and Neumann got the Bulldogs even at 11-all (3:56) while Noffke hit the front end of a two shot foul for a 12-11 edge (3:24). The lead didn’t last as L-C ran off an 8-5 surge to end the quarter on top 19-17 behind three point shots from sophomore Jake Zeitler (1:31) and junior Carson Falk.

Making the most of four shots from three point land, red-hot L-C ran off a 16-10 second quarter run to claim 35-27 halftime lead.

Peshtigo opened period two on a 5-0 run as Gunner Kinney drilled a three while Berth worked his way into the paint and dropped in a bucket for a 22-19 edge at the 6:10 mark. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they would only manage 6 points over the final 6 minutes while L-C fired in 16.

Back-to-back threes from Vlotho put L-C up 25-22 at the 4:32 mark while Willems connected from long range for a 30-22 spread with 2:53 remaining in the half.

After going scoreless for over 4 minutes, Dohl got the Bulldogs back on the scoreboard with a bucket and a 32-24 deficit (1:53). Neumann followed with a three point shot as Peshtigo trailed 32-27 with 57 seconds left before Zeitler hit a trey to put L-C up 35-27 at the half.

Period three is where the Bulldogs made their move as Berth found some room inside the L-C defense to key a 17-11 run and get within 46-44. Peshtigo tacked on a 10-8 fourth quarter surge to knot the score at the end of regulation at 54-all.

“We were up by two points in the overtime, got a stop but missed a free throw. L-C hit a 3 and we trailed the rest of the way,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said.

In the extra session, both teams struggled at charity stripe before L-C pulled out the victory with an 8-5 edge. Down 62-59 with :07 left, Peshtigo had to go the length of the court but couldn’t get a shot off.

“We knew we were going to play two quality opponents and our goal coming into the tournament was to play well and go 2-0. We had our chances but came up short. Overall I am pleased with how we played,” Spaulding added.

-Elcho Holiday Tournament-

Roberts, Gillett Top

Palmyra-Eagle 56-45

Dylan Roberts fired in a game high 21 points as the Gillett Tigers opened the Elcho Holiday Tournament with a 56-45 win over Palymra-Eagle.

The Tigers raced to a 21-7 first quarter lead and owned a 37-30 spread after three frames. Over the final 8 minutes, Gillett unloaded a 19-15 scoring edge.

The other semifinal clash saw host Elcho level Bowler 51-33 behind 26 points from Jaeger Adams.

Tigers Tipped In

Tourney Finals

Going up against host Elcho in the championship clash, Gillett suffered a 42-32 setback. The Tigers trailed 17-13 at halftime and were within 31-28 heading into the fourth quarter before getting outscored 11-4.

Jake Kasten topped Gillett with 13 points and Daniel Torres added 8.

Jaeger Adams fired in 23 points for the Hornets.
