Coleman Claims Oshkosh Tourney Again!

Bests 60-Team Field For 5th Straight Year; Blanchard, Karban 2nd

They did it again!

With every wrestler contributing points over the two-day mat classic, the Coleman Cougars claimed top honors at the prestigious 60-team Oshkosh On The Water tournament for the fifth straight year. Coleman needed each and every one of those points to edge Wittenberg-Birnamwood 321.5-318 for the team title at the 23rd annual mat classic.

Last year those same squads finished one-two at the meet with Coleman winning by a 278.5-245.5 margin.

“We ended up winning the Oshkosh tournament by 3 1/2 points when it was all said and done. Unbelievable performances by all in order to win, especially the last round. Every single wrestler on team contributed to the team win scoring points to help the cause,” Coleman coach Kevin Casper said. “After two days of wrestling it ended up coming down to the final match for us with CJ Pillath needing to win in order for us to finish first. He ended up getting a pin in that fifth place match.”

Random Lake notched third place with 293.5 points followed by Cedarburg 270.5 and Oshkosh West 237. Two other local teams competed with Peshtigo ending up in 42nd place with 63 points and Gillett-Suring 50th at 51 points.

The Cougars had 9 place winners, highlighted by runner-up finishes from Jordan Blanchard at 113 pounds and Dexter Karban at 160.

“Freshman Jordan Blanchard had a great tournament making it to finals and losing a hard fought championship match in overtime. Dexter Karban really wrestled well, pinning a very physical and undefeated wrestler from Waupaca in the semifinals,” Casper added.

Third place medals were won by Jensyn Schaal 126, Jackson Margis 132 and Trevor Seewald 145. Other key finishes for the Cougars were CJ Pillath 5th at 220, Marc Lansin 7th 132, Kevin Lansin 10th 152 and Alex Stodola 11th 170.

“All the other wins were just as important. Jensyn Schaal lost a heartbreaking overtime match in the semifinals to the eventual champion. Jackson Margis redeemed himself by beating a state place winner from Random Lake in the 3rd place match that he lost to in the quarterfinals earlier in the day. Trevor Seewald won his 100th career victory in his third place match,” Casper explained.

Freshman Jordan Blanchard worked the 113 pound mats to claim a silver medal finish with a 4-1 mark. Blanchard (17-3) pinned Mike Roycraft of Winneconne in 2:23, posted an 11-0 major decision over Nick Ditter of Chilton, blanked River Pawelski of Southern Door 6-0 and dominated Alec Potter of Laconia in the semifinals 12-2.

The championship bout was a different story as Blanchard dropped a heartbreaking 8-6 overtime loss to Cal Hansen of Deerfield (22-0).

Senior Dexter Karban (18-2) continues to shine on the canvas and came up with a second place finish at 160 pounds. Karban earned a berth in the finals on the strength of a 22-5 technical fall over Eric Wade of Kewaskum followed by a pair of major decisions...10-1 over Nathan Engle of Stevens Point and 10-1 over Jake Gruichich of West Allis. He recorded a 2:48 pin of Levi Petroske of Waupaca in the semifinals before losing to Braxton Potrykus of Wittenberg-Birnamwood (25-1) by a 10-2 major decision.

Third place medals were awarded to a trio of Cougars...Schaal, Margis and Seewald.

Moving to the 126 pound class, Jensyn Schaal (12-1) received an opening round bye then pinned Lucas Nelson of Westfield in 3:20. Schaal kept his winning ways rolling with a 12-4 major decision over Gavin Czerwonka of Wittenberg-Birnamwood and 21-8 over Nick Retzlaff of Ripon. Schaal came up short to Jose Acosta of Manitowoc Lincoln in double overtime 3-2 then battled his way back to claim third place with wins over Josh Hickey of Cedarburg 3-0 and Dustin Jensen of Freedom 11-3.

Jackson Margis (21-1) was on the winning side in his three opening matches at 138 pounds, including two pins, before losing to Trent Gottsacker of Random Lake 12-2. With 4 more matches needed to earn a bronze medal, Margis came through with flying colors nipping Weston Cracraft of Mishicot 3-2, Peshtigo’s DJ Messenger 8-5, pinned Hunter Pawelski of Southern Door 2:07 before gaining some revenge with a 4-0 win over Gottsacker of Random Lake.

Pins were the key for Trevor Seewald as the 145 pounder topped Nacie Calarco of Wabeno in 51 seconds, Jake Lanik of Cottage Grove Park 1:13 and Trevor Miske of Plymouth in 1:44.

Moving into the semifinals Seewald (20-1) was pinned by Zac Youngchild of Manitowoc Lincoln 3:00 before using a pair of pins to claim third place. Seewald required 1:00 to put Zach Coffeen of Laconia on his back in the consolation semifinals then took care of Trevor Miske for the second time in 4:23.

Working the 220 pound bracket, CJ Pillath (18-5) posted a 6-2 tournament mark for fifth place. All six of his wins came via pins, including a 2:36 effort over Josh Fehring of Lourdes Academy in the battle for fifth place. The quickest pin for Pillath came in round two, a 1:18 effort over Josh McMeans of Wisconsin Dells.

Marc Lansin finished 7th at 138 pounds, using a bye and two wins to move into the quarterfinals before getting dominated by Jake Morgan of Wilmot Union 16-4. Lansin bounced back beating Zak Stepniewski of Random Lake 4-2.

Kevin Lansin (14-8) capped a 10th place effort with a 5-3 tourney mark. Lansin whipped Brian Dowling of Lourdes Academy 10-2 in the consolation round only to fall 5-0 to Mason Matthias of Mishicot in the 9th place bout.

Alex Stodola (14-8) also went 5-3 at 170 pounds winning his last match by injury default.

Derek Teteak, 103 pounder who totaled 11 points at the meet, got pinned in round three by Josh Ehster of Mosinee (0:38) before putting Brandon Moravec of Wabeno on his back in 2:46. Teteak (7-3) was later pinned by Stetson Potrykus of Wittenberg-Birnamwood (25-3) in the consolation round in 4:59.

“Overall just extremely pleased with our team’s performance to come from behind and to never lead in the tournament until that final round,”Casper concluded.

Messenger Finishes 8th,

Madden 11th For Peshtigo

At Oshkosh Tournament

DJ Messenger (17-6) had the top finish for Peshtigo in 8th place as the team mustered up 63 total points.

Messenger used a bye, 15-3 major decision and a 4-2 win over Drew Rettler of West Bend West to begin his tourney run. In the quarterfinals, Messenger met David Giadyu of Cottage Grove Park and fell 12-3. Messenger recovered with a 6-4 win over Ivan Hebbe of Princeton before losing to Jackson Margis of Peshtigo 8-5 and Max Obois of Wisconsin Dells 3-2.

Hunter Madden of Peshtigo (17-5) came up with an 11th place finish at 132 pounds. Madden notched a 5:28 pin of Sean Ipsarides of Cedarburg followed by a thrilling 2-0 decision over Joe Cliver of Hortonville to move into the quarterfinals. That’s where Madden ran into trouble, falling to Cody Walrath of Freedom 10-4. His troubles continued in the consolation round with a 11-3 loss to Trey Storms followed by a 8-6 setback at the hands of Jose Calderon of Waukesha South. Madden capped the tourney with a forfeit win in the 11th place match.

Heavyweight Andy Johnston earned a bye and a 5:23 pin of Elijah Ayres of Ashwaubenon before suffering an injury that finished him for the tournament.

“I felt as a team we wrestled hard in a very tough tournament. At 106 Brian Krouth went 2-2, Hunter Madden went 4-3 and placed 11th, DJ Messenger 4-3 and placed 8th, 160 Shane Marquardt went 3-2, Andy Johnston went 2-0 and was injured in a win against Elijah Ayres of Ashwaubenon, but dropped out of tournament to remain at 18-0,” Peshtigo coach Warren Howard explained.

No Medals For

Gillett-Suring

Despite finishing in 50th place out of 60 teams, the Gillett-Suring squad did not have any wrestlers medal.

Garret Kohls (7-10) posted a 3-2 mark at 113 pounds with all 3 wins coming via pins. Kohls took care of Jonah Nelson of Whitefish Bay 3:01, Jacob Krider of Lomira 0:18 and Zach Hergerer of Kewaskum 3:48.

Alex Zeitler went 3-2 including pins of Jake Walker 2:59 in the first round, 2:22 over Derrick Rotta of Waupaca and a 10-3 decision over Taran Holland of Princeton.

Tyler Herning finished 3-2 at 195 pounds with a forfeit win, 3:26 pin of Chad Tessmann of Manitowoc and a 3:33 pin of Delangelo Benford of Milwaukee Bradley Tech.

At 138 pounds, Grant Fischer (6-7) was 1-2 for the tourney after getting pinned by Chris Holland of Ripon 2:30 and losing to Jakob Kasten of DePere 12-5.
