Peshtigo Gals Improve To 5-0

Issue Date: January 8, 2014

Tame Tigers 42-14 To Stay In M-O Lead

Unleashing a stingy defensive attack along with some excellent balanced scoring enabled the Peshtigo girls to remain perfect in the M-O Conference standings following a 42-14 whipping of Gillett Friday. Now 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play, the Bulldogs were never threatened while holding visiting Gillett to single digit scoring in each quarter.

Elsewhere in league play, Coleman and Suring continue to share second place at 3-1 following lopsided wins. Coleman used a 16-1 first quarter surge to level Lena 60-29 while Suring whipped Wausaukee 47-29. The final conference clash saw Crivitz knock off STAA 35-23 to even its league mark at 2-2.

A full slate of games will be played Thursday with Peshtigo taking the hike to Niagara, Suring visits STAA and Crivitz heads to Coleman. The fourth contest will take place Friday as Gillett travels to Lena.

-Friday’s Results-

Bulldogs Overwhelm

Gillett Cagers 42-14

A team that can hold its opponent to under five points scored in each of a game 's four quarters isn 't going to need much scoring of its own to get the job done.

Such was the case in Peshtigo Friday night as the Bulldogs defense dismantled the Gillett Tigers 42-14 to stay on top of the M-O Conference.

Up 10-4 at the end of one period, the Bulldog victory was never in question. The Peshtigo gang played some great team ball in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. Carly Dietrich got the clinic started by dishing a clever pass down low to Nicole Motkowski for an easy score. Two minutes later, after a particularly nice display of moving the ball around, Dietrich hit an outside jumper to make it 14-5 before scoring again underneath following a turnover on Gillett 's next possession. More precision passing before halftime saw Saige Ruleau find an open Dietrich on the baseline with a heads up pass. Dietrich drained another shot to finish the quarter with six and the Bulldogs hit the locker room up 18-6 and well on their way to victory.

Balanced scoring was key as a trio of Bulldogs finished with 7 points each...Amanda Majewski, Motkowski and Teja Tonn.

Cougars Breeze

Past Wildcats

Coleman enjoyed an ensemble scoring performance Friday night in Lena as eight Cougars recorded points scored in a 60-29 rout of the Wildcats.

Coleman also had its defensive game firing on all cylinders as they held the Lena cage crew to just a single point in the opening quarter (16-1) to set the tone for the rest of the game. Coleman would later hold their opponent to only two points in the third frame.

Coleman got a lot of points from the usual suspects as Makenzie Sadowski led all scorers in the game with 16, followed not far behind by Abby Bieber 's 12. Tess Rosner added eight while Tori Bushmaker and Hope Process each turned in seven.

Lena was paced by 11 from Kayla VanLanen and also got eight from Melissa Bushmaker.

Suring Routs Rangers

After a slow start saw Wausaukee score only three points in the opening quarter against the Eagles in Suring Friday, the Rangers put together a nice 13-point second frame and then outscored the Eagles 11-8 in the third to make it interesting at 38-27.

But the Wausaukee gang couldn 't close the contest any better than they had opened it, netting just two points in the final eight minutes of play as the Eagles held on for a decisive 47-29 win.

Kelsey School led all scorers by turning in 14 for Suring while teammate Erin Fisher added 12.

Wausaukee was paced by eight from Crysta Clark.

Kempka, Neumann Power

Wolverines Past STAA

Crivitz 's Jennifer Kempka poured in 14 points to take top-scoring honors Friday at home against STAA as the Wolverines opened the game with a 15-6 points blitz to set up the 35-23 win over the Cavalettes.

Victoria Neumann added 12 for the winners; Sophia Dama had five while Amanda Pickett and Sydney Baumann each turned in a pair to round out the Wolverine offensive effort.

STAA got a solid 11-point game out of Riley Schultz.

-Non League Results-

Lena Leveled

By Gibraltar

Lena, struggling to put points on the board, dropped a 50-23 decision to the visiting Vikings of Gibraltar Saturday as the team failed to score more than seven points in any of the game 's four quarters.

The lone bright spots on the offensive side of the stat sheet for Lena were the points columns for Kayla VanLanen, who finished with 10, and Sara Henry, who chipped in eight.

Gibraltar was paced by Lauren Kita 's game-high 17 points.

Crivitz Topped

By NEW 52-35

In a non-conference clash prior to the new year, the Crivitz Wolverines were outscored 33-12 in the middle quarters to drop a 52-35 contest to visiting NEW Lutheran.

Crivitz owned a 9-6 lead at the first break, only to see NEW unload a 20-5 second quarter scoring punch to pry open a 26-14 spread. The deficit for Crivitz grew to 39-21 after three frames before the hosts posted a 14-13 edge.

Victoria Neumann paced Crivitz with 11 points, Jen Kempka added 10 and Brianna Kopp 7.

Keifer Zimmerman fired in a game high 22 points to lead NEW on 5 buckets and 8-12 free throws. Sadie Nier netted 9 and Morgan Meerstein 7.
