Ethel R. McCarthy Grandma Mc, 99, Peshtigo, formerly of Oconto Falls, passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 19 at Rennes Health Center-West.
Born June 9, 1914, in Oconto Falls to Charles and Rachel (Temple) Gallagher, she grew up in the Oconto Falls area where she graduated from Oconto Falls High School in 1932. Following graduation, she attended teachers training and then taught school. On Feb. 16, 1935, she married John McCarthy in Gillett. The couple lived in Milwaukee and relocated to Gillett and farmed in the area. Upon moving back to Milwaukee, she was employed in quality control at Continental Can Co. for 25 years. The couple enjoyed vacationing at their cottage in Crivitz where they retired. Following her husbands death in 1987, she moved to Oconto Falls in 1991 where she became a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
She was known by many as Grandma Mc and she loved her Irish heritage and St. Patrick 's Day and usually had her nails painted Irish green. She lived a full life, treasuring her family, loved her kids and grandchildren, told stories, recited poetry, enjoyed football and driving her car.
As a grandma, she enjoyed campaigning for her grandson, John Gard during all of his elections and spent time volunteering in his Capitol office. She loved God deeply and found great strength in her faith. She had the ability to make everyone she met feel like an immediate friend and could put a smile on anyone 's face. There was nothing as special as Grandma Mc 's laugh and twinkle in her Irish eyes.
Survivors include a daughter, Dixie (Herbert) Gard, Lena; a son, Patrick (Jean) McCarthy, Greenfield; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
