Peshtigo Opens With A Rout

Hot Shooting Marquardt

Scores 27 Points In 72-43 Victory Over Tomahawk

Brittany Marquardt continues to fire away and connect.

The hot shooting Peshtigo senior guard found the mark for 7 treys and 27 points to spark the Bulldogs to a lopsided 72-43 Division 3 opening rout. Marquardt did most of her damage in the second half, tossing in a quartet of long range shots.

Sporting a plush 20-3 hardwood mark, the Bulldogs will now advance to the regional semifinals Friday at number two seed Northland Pines.

“Northland Pines is 18-4, an athletic team but not very deep. We are have to pack it in defensively and keep our mistakes down. That is a tough place to win at,” Bulldog boss Bob Kuchta said.

In other opening night WIAA tournament action, the Marinette Marines (4-18) pulled off a mild Division 2 upset knocking off host Menasha 39-37 in overtime. The Marines will now travel to top seed Notre Dame (21-1) for the regional semifinals Friday at 7pm.

The Coleman Cougars, co-champions of the M-O circuit, pounded Stevens Point Pacelli 53-15 in Division 3 play while Crivitz proved to be no match for Auburndale 61-9. Coleman hosts Auburndale Friday while Oconto, which drew an opening round bye, entertains Stratford.

A trio of M-O teams suffered first round Division 5 setbacks as Niagara lost to Phelps 37-31, Suring whipped Wausaukee for the third time this season 60-44 and STAA got roughed up by NEW Lutheran 58-24.

Regional semifinal pairings for D-5 on Friday find top seed Goodman-Pembine hosting Phelps, Three Lakes heading to Suring, Lena traveling to Gillett and NEW playing at Oneida Nation.

Marinette Moves On

With Overtime Win

The Marines got a clutch finish from Cassie Hilbert and will be moving on to level two in Division 2 playoff action following their 39-37 overtime clipping of Menasha on Tuesday night.

Hilbert found herself at the charity stripe with under four seconds remaining in regulation and the score knotted at 37. The Marines' standout was on target with both of her shots and the team's last-play defense did its job and kept Menasha's last second three-point attempt off target to take the win.

Katelyn Kuffel and Megan Veriha led the Marines with 10 apiece while Hilbert finished the game with six.

16-0 Start Keys

Peshtigo Victory

Opening the game on a 16-0 run and keeping Tomahawk scoreless until the 7:04 mark of period two enabled the Bulldogs to purse a lopsided 72-43 tournament win.

A total of 9 Peshtigo cagers made their way into the scoring column, highlighted by a 27 point outburst from Brittany Marquardt. The long range bombing Bulldog cashed in on 7 shots from behind the arc and 27 points. Overcoming some early foul troubles, sophomore guard Amanda Majewski added 14 points, Nicole Motkowski 9 and Carly Dietrich 8.

“I am proud of our girls and how they played hard until the end. Marquardt continues to shoot the ball well, but I think our balance was key,” Peshtigo coach Bob Kuchta said. “That 16-0 start got us going and gave our girls plenty of confidence. We scored a lot of points but also got sloppy at times. Have to try and clean that up. ”

Marquardt drilled a pair of three point shots in the first two minutes and Majewski one in the as the Bulldogs owned a commanding 16-0 lead at the first break. Dietrich added a pair of jumpers to key the early onslaught. Fullcourt pressure by the Bulldogs resulted in numerous turnovers and hurried shots by the Hatchets.

Tomahawk finally cracked the goose-egg on its side of the scoreboard when Devin Swan hit both ends of a two shot foul 56 seconds into period two. Sparked by three point shots from Talyn Jones and Jessie Harmon, Tomahawk cut the deficit to 24-11 before a pair of free throws by Marquardt along with a trey stretched the lead to 30-11 with 1:44 left in the half. Saige Ruleau scored on an offensive rebound with under a minute to play as Peshtigo took a 35-13 cushion into intermission.

After going scoreless for 2-plus minutes to begin the third quarter, Marquardt hit twice from behind the arc, Majewski turned a steal into a layup and Motkowski added a pair of free throws for a 45-20 edge (3:26).

With the outcome no longer in doubt, the Bulldogs closed out the post-season win with their highest scoring advantage of the game 27-19. Marquardt netted 8 points in the quarter, Motkowski 7 and Majewski 5 to key the offense.

Tomahawk used back-to-back three point shots by Harmon to close within 17 points at 52-35 at the 4:32 mark only to see Motkowski and Majewski answer with baskets. After Harmon drained her fourth trey of the final period for a 59-42 score (2:22), the Bulldogs watched Motkowski, Teja Tonn and Marquardt connect on shots to restore the upper hand to 65-42.

Harmon finished with 22 points for Tomahawk, including six three point shots.

Cougars Win Easily

If you thought that the beginning of the playoff season would have seen the end of Coleman's pattern of winning games without allowing opponents to score more than 10 points in any one quarter, you would have been wrong.

Pacelli made the trip to Coleman on Tuesday and couldn't manage any better than seven points in the first quarter. That was as good as it got. The visitors managed just one point in the third and two in the fourth.

Pretty good defense from the girls in green and white.

Meanwhile, everybody on the Coleman roster was scoring. Abby Bieber led the way with 14, Sammy Schaal had nine while Makenzie Sadowski and Raena Chucka each had eight.

-Division 5 Results-

Niagara Nudged

By Phelps 37-31

It was one and done for the Niagara cagers falling to host Phelps in the regional quarterfinals. The closely contested clash saw the Badgers trail 19-14 at halftime before the host team sealed the win with a 18-17 second half charge.

Brooklyn Wolosyn popped in 10 points to lead Niagara, including a three point shot.

Ashley Volkmann netted a game high 17 points for Phelps, which only connected on 3-15 free throws.

Cavalettes Lose

To NEW Lutheran

Scoring just 6 points in the first half, the Cavalettes (2-21) were no match for NEW Lutheran Tuesday night 58-24. STAA trailed 38-6 at intermission and was outscored 20-16 over the final two frames.

Riley Schultz pumped in 16 points to pace STAA, 13 of those coming in the second half.

Sadie Nier scored 22 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for NEW.

Lena Tops Sevastopol

The Lena Wildcats started the playoff contest against Sevastopol with some hot offense, jumping out to an 11-4 lead after one quarter and then going on to take the 42-34 victory.

Kayla VanLanen had 15 points to pace the winners while teammate Melissa Bushmaker turned in 14.

Rangers Bounced By

M-O Foe Suring 60-44

The Suring Eagles got big performances from their top players on Tuesday night at home against Wausaukee, overpowering the visitors 15-8 in the opening quarter en route to a 60-44 level one win.

Calley VanBellinger led Suring with 16 points while Jacquelyn Lenz, Kelsey School and Erin Fisher each had 10.

Alexis Ranallo had 13 to lead Wausaukee.
