State Medals For 6 Cougars

Margis Leads Way With Silver

At 138 Pounds; Lansin And

Seewald Finish In 3rd Place

It was another banner run at the WIAA state wrestling meet as six of the 7 Coleman Cougars who made it to Madison took home medals. Leading the medal haul for coach Kevin Casper’s grapplers was 138 pounder Jackson Margis with a second place finish.

Joining Margis atop the awards stand were third place finishers Marc Lansin at 132 pounds and Trevor Seewald 145 while 113 pound freshman Jordan Blanchard and CJ Pillath were fourth. Jensyn Schaal ended up sixth while Dexter Karban did not place.

“We had a very good weekend getting 6 out of 7 state place winners. I know there a few wrestlers that were hoping to bring back a gold but they have nothing to be ashamed of, just getting there is hard enough. For 6 out of 7 to place is excellent,” Casper said. “In all my years of coaching, I can't ever remember so many defending state champs and kids ranked at the very top getting beat. It shows the level of competition at the tournament.”

A four-time state participant, Margis (42-3) opened with a 6-0 decision over Ross Siegenthaler of Mineral Point followed by a 4-1 semifinal win over Trent Gottsacker of Random Lake (45-9).

Going up against highly touted freshman Micah Johnson of Boyceville (45-1) in the finals, Margis ran into early troubles and never recovered in losing 11-2. After a scoreless first period in the title bout, Johnson used an escape, takedown and two point near fall for a quick 5-0 lead.

“Jackson had an awesome tournament getting to the state finals, which is every wrestlers dream, and to have the opportunity to be part of the parade of champions. Jackson just got caught early in the second period with a head lock for a 5 point move when the score was still 0-0, ” Casper said. “He beat two very good wrestlers in the quarters and semifinals. I'm very proud of Jackson and his accomplishments, getting to state all four years, two time state place winner and will end up in the top three for career wins at Coleman.”

A pair of Cougars fought their way through the consolation bracket to claim third place.

Sitting at 38-5, Marc Lansin suffered a 6-3 quarterfinal loss to Stetson Clary before closing out his state stay with a trio of wins. Lansin posted a 14-2 major decision over Ben Adams of Bruce, registered a 7-5 sudden victory against Cole Large of Ozaukee then used the sudden victory route again in a 6-2 third place win over Jordan Corcoran of Aquinas.

Forced into five state matches, Seewald went 4-1 for a 44-3 readout. Seewald pinned Nick Bennett in 55 seconds in round one before dropping a 3-1 sudden victory to Zach Newton of Spring Valley/Elmwood in the quarterfinals. Seewald was up 1-0 with :02 left when he was called for stalling.

Forced to the consolation bracket, Seewald topped Ben Lincks of Waterloo 7-4, won by forfeit over Devin Lemanski of Edgar before getting another shot at Newton. Seewald didn’t let this opportunity slip away and earned some redemption with a 7-1 victory for third place.

“Marc had a great tournament taking third place which is excellent. He won two big matches in overtime to earn that medal,” Casper commented. “Trevor had a very good tournament coming back to get third place. Trevor pinned his first kid and then lost a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals when he led 1-0 with two seconds left. The ref called Trevor for stalling with two seconds left in match which then tied it at 1-1 to send it to overtime. I really don't think there should have been stalling called. In overtime, Trevor shot in on a takedown and the other boy countered and spun around for the takedown to win 3-1.”

Freshman Jordan Blanchard (38-8) found plenty of success in his first state appearance bringing home a fourth place medal at 113 pounds. Going 2-2 at the state meet, Blanchard lost twice to Adam Becker of Johnson Creek. Setback number one came in the quarterfinals 5-2 and the second loss in the third place match 3-1. In between Blanchard topped James Palmer of Boyceville (43-4) by a 6-1 score then pinned Anthony Glinecki of Stratford (43-5) in 33 seconds.

Sporting a 41-11 readout, junior CJ Pillath was fourth at 220 pounds. Pillath pinned Clayton Uselman of Johnson Creek in 3:39 before dropping a quarterfinal bout to Ben Shone of Cumberland 6-4. Pillath bounced back to whip Josh Pronschinske 11-5 and Casey Johnson of Manawa 10-4 before losing to Stone for the second time in a 2:03 pin.

“Jordan had a great tournament taking 4th place as a freshman...beat two excellent kids,” Casper remarked. “CJ had an excellent tournament as well taking 4th place. He pinned his first kid on Thursday night and lost a close match to a very good boy from Cumberland with a 41-2 record. CJ came back with two big wins, one of them being against Casey Johnson 45-3 who he lost to at sectionals the week before. For third he lost again to same kid from Cumberland.”

Jensyn Schaal (30-6) went 1-3 and came up with a sixth place medal at 126 pounds. Schaal’s lone win came in the opener against Trey Lundequam of Cumberland 9-2. After losing to Kyle Mezera (46-2) 6-4 and Tyler Berg of Spring Valley/Elmwood 4-2, Schaal forfeited the fifth place match.

Dexter Karban (39-6) lost both of his state matches and did not place. Karban fell 9-4 to Luke Nowak in the quarterfinals and 11-3 to Mason McCauley in the consolation round.

“Jensyn beat a very good kid from Cumberland 9-1. We knew the semifinal match was going to be the championship match with Mezera from Lancaster. Jensyn lost a very close match 6-4 match and that boy went on to be state champ. Jensyn had the flu the next day and wrestled the first match but couldn't continue for the 5th place,” Casper said. “Unfortunately Dexter didn't place and ended up losing to the eventual state champion. Dexter led in that match up until the last period where he just got a little out of position, got reversed and put to his back. Dexter has nothing to be ashamed of for he has had a great career at Coleman.”

Looking back on the state tournament, Casper said...“I'm very proud of all of our wrestlers and what they accomplished this past weekend. All their hard work and dedication paid off for all of them to have the opportunity to wrestle in the state tournament. These are things they will remember for the rest of their life and to be part of that rich Coleman tradition.”

Kelsey And Tousey

Fifth For Blue Devils

A pair of Oconto grapplers, Elton Kelsey and Brandon Tousey, captured fifth place medals in the Division 3 meet.

Sporting a 39-6 readout, Elton Kelsey went 3-2 in the 120 pound bracket. Kelsey topped Isaac Brockman 8-4 and Cruze Hurlburt 10-7 before running into problems. In the semifinals, Kelsey fell 9-2 to Brandon Roen of Riverdale (40-11) and 6-3 to Brandon Depies of Random Lake (46-4). In the fifth place bout, Kelsey posted a 4-2 decision over Austin Najbrt of Cadott (40-11).

Tousey (33-6) also captured a fifth place mark at 152 pounds. Tousey nipped Tevin Anderson of Unity 4-3 in his first match, lost 7-1 to Cullen Pedersen of New Lisbon (45-1) and then bounced back with a 4-2 sudden victory over Wyatt Weiler of Auburndale.

In the consolation semifinals, Tousey lost 3-2 to Scott Pittz of Mineral Point (36-14) before finishing with a 5-3 decision over Dan Tauchen of Bonduel (39-10).

Two other Blue Devils dropped their opening matches as Aiden Wusterbarth (35-6) lost 3-1 sudden victory to Ben Gobel of Cambridge at 106 pounds. Bryan Ozak (29-7) fell 11-0 to Weston Cracraft of Mishicot (46-5) in the 138 pound opener.

Krueger Is Second

Best At 145 Pounds;

Johnston Goes 1-2

After winning the state title at 132 pounds last year, Oconto Falls junior Dewey Krueger had to settle for second place at 145. Sporting a 41-3 mat mark, Krueger notched a trio of state wins before falling in the finals to Jacob Englebert of Southern Door 2-1.

Krueger pinned Dylan Winchel of Sparta in 1:50 to open his state work, posted a 12-1 whipping of Tristan Brewer before pinning Austin Worachek of Luxemburg-Casco in 1:13.

Going up against 49-1 Englebert, who beat him in the sectional final a week prior 3-0, Krueger came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision. The match was decided on an escape by Englebert with 9 seconds left. With both wrestlers earning an escape, the difference came down to a second period stalling call on Krueger.

Peshtigo heavyweight Andy Johnston opened on a winning note before suffering a couple of losses. Johnston (43-6) pinned Brodey Kemmerer of Ellsworth in 3:44 in round one before lasting just 20 seconds in a bout against Matt Halverson of Kiel (45-2) in the quarterfinals. Forced into the consolation round, Johnston got roughed up and later pinned by Thor Riemer of Osceola (39-7).
