Maroons Downed In District Finals 48-46

Despite putting together a late surge, the Menominee Maroons (8-12) saw their season come to an end in the District 64 championship game Friday night 48-46 at the hands of the visiting Escanaba Eskymos.

The Maroons earned a title game berth following a 50-42 semifinal victory over Kingsford Wednesday.

Escanaba (17-6) played in the regional tournament in Petoskey Monday and lost to Cadillac 55-52.

Maroons Survive Late

Kingsford Rally 50-42

Owning the upper hand for most of the game, the Maroons saw Kingsford close the gap to 49-42 with 0:21 ticks left before wrapping up a 50-42 district semifinal win Wednesday. Defense and the shooting of sophomore Adam Nolde proved to be the difference.

“Our defense played well the first half, active and hustling at times. Kingsford didn’t score its first basket until the 5 minute mark of the second quarter. Credit the kids, they worked on the defensive end, ” Maroon coach Pete Pericolosi said. “Nolde had a nice game shooting the ball, making 10 of 12 shots to finish with a season high 25 points.”

Nolde did most of his scoring damage in the first half, netting 9 points in period one and 4 more in the second frame. Over the final two quarters Nolde tossed in 12 points, 7 coming in the third quarter. Senior guard Devon Harris added 9 points while Tyler Howell chipped in with 6.

The Maroons finished with a 18-45 shooting mark (40%) and turned the ball over 10 times.

Menominee jumped out to a 10-2 first quarter lead (2:52) as Nolde connected on a pair of two point shots and a three while Harris hit 2 of 4 free throws. The 6’5 Howell worked free on the baseline and Nolde turned a steal into a buzzer beating layup for a 14-5 spread.

A three point shot by Harris to open the second quarter pushed the Maroon lead to 17-5 (6:55) before lefty Jack Glodowski snuck through for a layup and Kingsford’s first bucket of the game. Two more mid-range jumpers by Nolde, including one with 30 seconds remaining, gave the Maroons a 24-14 halftime cushion. Kingsford relied on free throws in the opening 16 minutes, making 9-12 tosses.

The Flivvers used layups by Chris Roell and Dan Harrington to close within 24-18 at the 6:06 mark of period three before Harris slipped through for a layup and Nolde added two buckets to restore the upper hand to 30-18.

Kingsford used a three pointer by Harrington and layup from Roell to cut the deficit to 32-23 with 1:50 left. But Menominee answered again when freshman Marcus McKenney scored on a drive, Howell a rebound while Nolde hit a late three pointer for a 39-23 advantage.

Another three point shot by Nolde followed by a Harris layup had the Maroons comfortably in front 44-27 in period three. The momentum switched sides moments later when Maroon senior Devon Barley was whistled for his fourth foul and immediately followed by a technical.

Kingsford’s Harrington swished both free throws for the technical then added a rebound shot and a trey to cut the deficit to 44-34 with 3:16 left.

“I thought we were ready to blow them out and the technical gave them new life. They made both free throws, hit a three, we miss two bunnies followed by another three and just like that they were back in the game,” Pericolosi commented.

The Maroons managed to recover thanks to the free throw line as Nolde hit a pair with 2:02 left, Ryan Woods went 3-4 and McKenney 1-2 with :09 left.

“We had a height advantage but didn’t use it. Our big guys would get the ball on the block or rebound and then dribble out with it. We needed to go right back up with it,” Pericolosi said.

Harrington, a 5’11 junior, paced Kingsford with 25 points and 9 rebounds. As a team Kingsford (7-12) connected on 13-38 attempts.

Season Ends With

District Finals Loss

To Escanaba 48-46

After losing to Escanaba twice during the regular season, the Maroons hoped the third time would be a charm. It nearly was as a balanced scoring attack that saw 4 cagers tally 9-12 points kept the Maroons close in this post-season clash.

Sophomore Adam Nolde fired in 12 points, freshman Marcus McKenney and Tyler Howell 10 points each while senior point guard Devon Harris added 9 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and two steals. The Maroons made 16-47 shots (34%) and turned the ball over 10 times.

“This was an exciting game that went down to the wire. We didn’t play very good defense in the first half, giving up 30 points and if Escanaba would have scored 60 for the game, we would have been in trouble. The second half we played better giving up just 18,” Maroon coach Pete Pericolosi said.

The tight tourney affair saw the Maroons use baskets by Nolde and McKenney to go up 4-0 before Escanaba battled back for a 10-6 cushion on a three point play by 6’5 Brandon Robinette.

Howell answered with a three point play of his own while a jumper by Sam Molnar and two free throws from Robinette with 53 ticks left put the Eskymos in front 14-9 at the first break.

Nolde got the Maroons rolling with a three pointer to open period two and a pair of bombs by McKenney gave Menominee an 18-16 edge (6:22). Back to back runners by McKenney and Harris extended the lead to 22-18 before Escanaba unleashed a 10-0 run. Robinette, who was named player of the year in the GNC, connected twice while Molnar added a clutch three.

Two free throws from Harris along with a buzzer beating bucket by Ty Clausen got the Maroons within 30-26 at halftime.

A slow start to the third quarter saw the Maroons fall behind 37-31 before Nolde found the touch on a three pointer at the 1:48 mark. Howell followed with a bucket, Devon Barley added one free throw and Harris a pair for a 41-39 deficit heading into the final 8 minutes.

With their seasons on the line, points were at a premium as both teams tallied 7 each. Two Harris free throws and a Howell layup put Menominee back in front 44-43 with 6:03 remaining.

A three point play by Molnar gave Escanaba a 46-44 edge with 3:19 left before Harris twirled the twine to knot the score at 46-all at the 2:56 mark. Working the ball around, Escanaba’s Ben Kleiman got free in the paint to put Escanaba up 48-46 with 0:46 remaining.

Getting the ball back, Menominee wore down the clock and was setting up for a last second shot. A potential three point attempt was ruined when Robinette knocked the ball out of bounds on a pass from Harris to Nolde. Moments later, Kleiman thwarted the Maroon comeback bid by stealing a pass from Howell to Harris with under 2 seconds left to seal the win.

“We had our chances a couple of times. With the score tied 46-46 and 2:10 left, I really thought about playing for the last shot. But we got out of sync and set up a three point shot for Nolde. The pass by Harris was deflected out of bounds and we got the ball in the worst place to throw it in, the corner. Got things set up and were looking for Nolde off a double screen, but the pass was stolen by Kleiman,” Pericolosi explained. “We put Harris on Robinette in the second half and he only scored 4 points.”
