THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Gilberte R. Leslie
Gilberte R. Leslie, 80, of Niagara passed away Monday, March 31 at Maryhill Manor in Niagara.
Born April 25, 1933, in Nice, France, daughter of Francois and Teresa Maria (Genovesi) Gelsi, her parents moved from Capoliveri, Italy to Nice and raised two daughters, Gilberte and Juliete, during the Second World War. The family went through hard times and she had to live with another family in the countryside during the occupation of France. She returned to Nice with her family and she learned to be a talented dress designer and at the age of 18, she married Wilbur L. Leslie on Dec. 30, 1952 while he was stationed in France with the Navy. The couple moved to Niagara and were married almost 49 years until his passing on June 22, 2011.
An excellent cook and renowned baker, her pie and cake making skills were legendary and she fed many family members and friends in her kitchen. Her skills included quilting, knitting, embroidery, sewing, reading, gardening and canning. She was always knitting socks, giving them as gifts to her family and friends. She made friends with anyone she met and enjoyed the time she spent with her friends at Stoney Brook Apartments. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, playing cards, dominos, going to the casino with relatives and friends, feeding and watching the birds from her kitchen window and picking wild berries to make jams and jellies. She had her own raspberry garden where she produced jams and jellies from and she also raised chickens and beef for her family. She loved animals of all kinds, taking in a stray or injured and nursing it until it was well or could be returned to its owner.
She is survived by her children, Gene (Donna) Leslie and Eric (Tina) Leslie, both of Niagara and Sharon (Marland) Carpenter, Omro; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a nephew Christian and two nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur and her only sister, Juliete.
