M-O Standouts Selected To Football Foundation Team

A pair of M-O Conference senior standouts have been selected as recipients of The National Football Foundation’s — Wisconsin Chapter Scholar Athlete award for 2014. A total of 11 students were selected and honored during the Wisconsin Badgers’ Spring Football Game on April 12. Members of the Scholar Athlete Team received a plaque and a WFF jacket.

Each high school in the state that offers football is allowed to submit one high school football player as a nominee for the 11-man Wisconsin Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Team. Applicants are required to submit an essay on their high school football experience, along with their high school transcripts, and a letter of recommendation from their high school football coach and a school administer.

The State Scholar Athlete team is selected on academic performance, ACT score, character, leadership and football career accomplishments. From those 11 chosen to the Scholar Athlete Team, the Board of Directors chooses the recipient of the George H. Christ Memorial Scholarship Award winner who receives a $1,000 scholarship from the National Football Foundation Wisconsin Chapter and Luke Stanley was this year’s recipient.

The Football Foundation winners from Wisconsin include Emmit Carpenter, Ashwaubenon; Beau DeLaet, Wausaukee; Jordan Eikamp Cochrane-Fountain City; Ben Fischer, Crivitz; Ben Mogilevsky Madison LaFollette; Mark Saari, Hurley; Max Scharping, Green Bay Southwest; Nicholas Schiedt, Janesville Craig; Spencer Fricke, Manitowoc Roncalli; Reid Van Gysel, Fall River and Luke Stanley, Menomonie who was also the recipient of the George H. Christ Memorial Scholarship.

DeLaet was the starting quarterback for the Wausaukee Rangers throwing for 413 yards and 4 touchdowns while rushing for 635 yards and 6 more scores. He earned second team honors as a signal caller and linebacker.

“From early on Beau has always put in a tremendous amount of work and effort in everything that he has done.  He was a leader in the weight room and responded well to coaching.  He has a tremendous amount of commitment and desire to perform well.  This commitment and desire is also there for Beau in the classroom.  He has worked hard to do well in all of his classes and has challenged himself to take rigorous academic classes over and above the standard requirements for graduation.  I strongly believe that this work ethic has been with him for a very long time,” Wausaukee coach Jared Deschane said. “ Beau has had players before him as role models that have had similar success on the field and in the classroom, and he in turn has been a role model for our younger student athletes coming up.”

Standing at 6’1.5 and running a 40 yard dash in 4.63, Fischer paced the M-O circuit in scoring with 140 points on 20 touchdowns and 10 two-point conversions as well as being the number two runner with 990 yards on 98 carries. Fischer will continue his football career as a preferred walk-on for the Wisconsin Badgers. The 2014 class valedictorian and owning a 4.0 GPA, Fischer is the first Wolverine to be named all-region and all-state since Joe Parks in 2002.

In talking about Fischer, Crivitz football coach, Jeff Ott said... “Ben was a fierce competitor who absolutely hated to lose. Most kids after a loss get on the bus or go to the locker room and they have a short memory about how much it hurts to lose. Ben took each loss and used it as motivation to get better. Ben is not a stats kid. He doesn’t know how many carries he gets a game or how many shots that he takes. He is all about the team winning.”

Continuing, Ott added... “the head recruiter for the Badgers is Ben Strickland and his direct quote to me was that Ben is the type of kid who will be successful on the field and in the classroom and he knows how to conduct himself off of the field. Over the years Crivitz has had a half dozen or more athletes play football at the Division 3 and Division 2 level since I got here in the early 90’s, but we have never a player with his combination of size, speed, mental toughness, and vision.”

In closing, Deschane said... “I agree with the WFCA when that say that being named to the WFF Scholar Athlete Team is arguably the highest honor any senior football player can earn in Wisconsin. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the ceremony and I can honestly say that it was a great experience for the student athletes that were recognized, and for myself as a coach.  The awards presentation ceremony was first class as they recognized each athlete individually with a bio of their accomplishments.
