Tough Week For Marines, Lose Two
It certainly was a tough week for the Marinette Marine baseball team losing 2 of 3 games to fall to 3-4-1 overall and 3-2 in the Bay Conference.
The Marines split a doubleheader with New London Friday, dropping game one 6-2 before bouncing back in the nightcap 8-4. Things got worse Monday in a 20-2 shellacking at the hands of West DePere.
Marinette will return to the ball diamond Friday with a make-up game at West DePere, Saturday hosting defending Bay champion Hortonville in a doubleheader starting at 11am before traveling to Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday, May 6.
Marines Earn Split
With New London
The Marines came up with a Bay Conference split against New London Friday afternoon, losing game one 6-2 before coming back to post an 8-4 victory in game two.
In the opener, the Marinette bats were limited to just two hits by winning pitcher Tyler Jagiello and reliever Joe Schuster. Jagiello worked 5 innings, walking 3, fanning 5 and giving up 2 runs on 2 hits.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Marinette used walks to Luke Johnson and Alex Servatius along with a sac fly off the bat of Colton Dessart and single from Jimmy Jackimowicz to produce the runs.
Aaron Benson absorbed the loss yielding 4 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts over 5 innings. Kevin Konyn hurled the final two frames.
The nightcap saw Marinette combine 13 hits and 3 walks to back the complete game pitching of Alex Gressel for an 8-4 win. The bottom of the Marinette order were 6-8 as Caylubb Maske and Gressel both went 3-4 with one run scored each.
Marinette pushed across 5 runs in the second inning on 5 hits, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Benson. In the third frame, Johnson walked and made his way round the bases on singles by Kolby Garza, Maske and Gressel.
Garza was hit by a pitch and saw courtesy runner Colton Dessart score on a double by Maske in the fifth for a 7-4 edge. Marinettes final run came in the sixth when Benson doubled and scooted home on a single by Blake Miller.
Gressel scattered 8 hits and fanned 3 during his 7 inning mound stint.
By Phantoms 20-2
In a Bay Conference mismatch Monday,visiting West DePere scored in all five innings on its way to a lopsided 20-2 win. Marinette trailed 9-1 after three frames before West DePere jammed the plate for 8 runs in the fourth inning.
Brad Pierre, Brandan Meissner, Mason Maus, Reece Lade and Zack Sanders had two hits each for the Phantoms.
Marinettes number two hitter Kevin Konyn reached on an error and scored on another error for 6-1 first inning deficit. In the third frame Jimmy Jackimowicz singled and scored following two fly balls and singles off the bats of Jacob Swenson and Blake Miller.
Jackimowicz was roughed up for 16 runs on 10 hits in just 3 innings of work before being relieved by Alex Servatius and Miller.
It was not a good game at all, like we didnt want to be there. Our pitchers gave up lots of walks and hits plus we had numerous errors, Marinette coach Dave Francour said.
