George E. Smith, 88, passed away Feb. 17, at Rennes Health Center-East, Peshtigo, where he was a resident.
Born on Feb. 25, 1925 son of the late George and Myrtle (Arseth) Smith, he graduated from Marinette High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 16, 1943, served his country in WWII and was part of the Normandy Invasion. After returning from the Army he worked at the Lloyd Plant in Menominee, then went to Milwaukee in 1947 and worked at various jobs including Pabst Brewing Co., City of Milwaukee, and A.O. Smith, retiring in 1978.
Survivors include a brother, Gerald C. (Alta) Smith of Nebraska; an aunt, Helen Kruse of Marinette, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly J. Rettke and her husband, Harold.
Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 am, Friday, May 16th at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.
