Drowning Saturday Near Caldron Falls
Michael Eugene Two-Rivers-Broeffle, 20, Green Bay, drowned Saturday afternoon, May 25, while swimming in the Peshtigo River Flowage below the Caldron Falls Dam off Boat Landing 8 Road in the Town of Stephenson.
He was swimming with two other men off the boat land when Broeffle went under and did not come up. His body was recovered about 8:50 p.m. by divers from the Marinette County Sheriff Department and pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner George Smith.
Sheriff Jerry Sauve reported dispatch received calls of a possible drowning shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday and deputies, Twin Bridge Rescue and Town of Stephenson Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Also responding were DNR wardens.
Wisconsin Public Service Corp., which operated the Caldron Falls Dam assisted by lowering the water in the area for divers to begin their search.
It was Marinette Countys first drowning of the year.
The U.S. Coast Guard advises swimmers and boaters to keep safety first. Included is no drinking and driving, double check all boating equipment and wear life jackets.
It was reported that in 2013 about 70 percent of all drowning mishaps happened when life jackets were not being used. A study by the American Red Cross reported that 54 percent of Americans cannot swim or perform basic swim skills.
