From our readers

Thanks Dad, I Love You

As I look back upon my life,

It’s hard to comprehend.

The fullness of my father’s love,

It seems to have no end.

His patience and his guidance,

And his kind and loving ways.

The special thoughtful things he did

To brighten up my days.

The love in his protectiveness

Which took so long to learn,

Was really there to show me

That he had a deep concern.

Now as I look through older eyes,

Your love for God made you so wise.

So these are just a few things, Dad,

I LOVE AND THANK YOU FOR.

Until we met again someday,

On Heaven’s golden shore.

******

Dear Graduate

As you travel down life’s road,

If in everything you do.

You rely upon God’s guidance,

He will bring success to you.

For it is not fame and fortune,

That brings us true success.

It’s peace and joy in knowing God,

That brings true happiness.

Both poems by Joyce Bedora

Dear Editor:

Ellen Sorensen’s resignation is a plus for Marinette County. Too bad we are still paying her.

We have some serious problems in other departments in Marinette County, in particular the Highway Department. Highway Commissioner Ray Palonen was unemployed from a county to our south when he was hired here. You have to ask yourself why was he walking the streets seeking employment if he was so good? This is not the first time the county hired a person from another county for the commissioner position.

Mr. Palonen lacks professionalism, credibility and people skills.

Example: Shore Drive and Cty BB. Palonen’s mentality is my way or the highway. He was force feeding the citizens that live on Shore Drive and BB. Palonen was demonstrating his power as Highway Commissioner, a complete misuse of authority.

Another question: did our executive or highway committees ever ask Palonen what happened with the construction project at the intersection of D and DD in Harmony? Does the committee know what happened? A company had to repour the curb and gutter due to poor engineering and grading.

It goes back to mentality of our Commissioner - my way or the highway.

How much did this cost the county? I know the commissioner will pass the buck on this one. Someone didn’t do their job. He will blame the employees.

West of Beaver, on County Road P, a huge farmer, and a very nice man, ran a six (6) inch hose through a culvert to pump his manure out to the fields. This farmer was doing the correct thing, but was issued a $50 citation for encroachment.

Doesn’t that make you proud to have this kind of mentality for a Commissioner? Again, my way or the highway. I was told the citation was to be torn up by a board member, but that’s not the point. The citation never should have been issued in the first place. I am totally convinced Sorensen sold our Executive Committee a bill of goods on Palonen’s qualifications. Both Sorensen and Palonen knew each other prior to Palonen’s employment as Highway Commissioner. Again, our Executive Committee was sold a bill of goods.

I don’t understand how our Executive Committee continues to employ rejects from other counties.

Take a look at the number two (2) highway position. Job Title: Patrol Superintendent. Reports to: Highway Commissioner. Joe Baranek holds this position. Qualifications for number two (2) position require an Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a two year college or technical school in Engineering or related field. He does not qualify. The position also requires six (6) years of experience in highway construction/maintenance or related field and two (2) years supervisory experience. He does not qualify. In addition, this position acts as Highway Commissioner in his/her absence. He is not qualified.

I strongly believe Sorensen and Palonen sold our Executive Committee on Baranek’s qualifications.

Right now, Ray Palonen and Joe Baranek’s main objective is to eliminate all employees who are eligible for the eight year insurance benefit plan upon retirement.

If they fulfill this objective, where is the experience going to come from to maintain our roads in Marinette County and do other projects? The people being hired right now do not have the experience or qualifications to perform these functions.

My wife and I were out to dinner one evening when a county highway employee sitting next to me was telling another person how he was moving up as the Commissioner was weeding out the older experienced workers by pulling them off their trucks and having them pick garbage along the road.

So, when all our experienced employees are forced out, those who have years and years of experience with the Marinette County Highway Department are gone, what happens then? The hard work and dedication these employees have given to our highway department is unparalleled.

Where would these dedicated employees find new employment?

Why should they have to because of two people?

Let’s get Marinette County back on track. When people are hired for key positions lets get the best people for the job not some other counties rejects.

I pray that Ray and Joe’s objective is not a directive from our Executive Committee and board.

My next letter will be asking the question why the County Board voted to let the highway department supervisors take home trucks costing taxpayers thousands of dollars a year. If the board voted on it when was the vote?

John B. Gaffney,

Town of Pound
