After Three Straight Victories, Legion Falls To Marinette 14-2

After stringing together victories over Oconto Falls, White Lake and Antigo, the Peshtigo Legion gang saw its winning streak come to a screeching halt Monday in a 14-2 loss to visiting Marinette.

Now 3-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Northern Division, Peshtigo will entertain Menominee Wednesday, June 25 at 5:30pm before heading to Oconto on Monday, June 30.

Peshtigo Slips Past

Antigo For 3rd Win

Making the most of 8 hits, Peshtigo tipped visiting Antigo 8-7 Wednesday afternoon. The local Legion gang fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first, knotted the score at 5-all after two frames before overcoming a 7-5 deficit.

Austin Marquardt was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Jordan Berth. Marquardt fanned 3 and gave up 2 hits over 3 shutout innings. Berth was roughed up for 7 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks over 4 innings.

“The win over Antigo was our third victory of the week,” coach Zeske said. “We hit the ball well and are becoming more selective at the plate. Our pitching has been solid while Austin Marquardt did a great job in relief.”

Trailing 5-0, Peshtigo closed the gap with 3 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Bero and Matt Zeske lashed singles to open the game, Sharkey reached on an error to score one run, Matt Borkovec punched a RBI single while another error enabled the final run to score.

Peshtigo got even at 5-5 in the second frame when number nine swinger Zach Neumann slapped a one-out single, Zeske a two-out single, followed by a walk, wild pitch and an error.

A RBI single by Cam Noskowiak and an error keyed a two-run third inning to put Antigo up 7-5.

But Peshtigo didn’t back down as coach Marty Zeske saw his diamond gang score twice in the fourth for a 7-all deadlock. Tyler Marquardt opened with a single and Neumann hit into a fielder’s choice for the first out. No problem. Bero and Zeske drew walks, Berth tallied a run scoring single and Sharkey a sac fly.

With the score deadlocked, Peshtigo put together the winning rally in the fifth. Austin Marquardt reached on an error and moved to second base on a grounder by brother Tyler. With two-outs, Neumann hit a bloop double just inside the rightfield line scoring Austin Marquardt.

Reliever Marquardt made that run stand up, setting down Antigo in order in the sixth, gave up a leadoff single in the seventh before closing out the game with two flyballs and a strikeout.

Peshtigo No Match

For Marinette 14-2

Looking to continue their winning ways, Peshtigo managed just 3 hits while suffering a lopsided 14-2 loss at the hands of Marinette Monday. Peshtigo starting pitcher Matt Borkovec was roughed up for 7 runs on 6 hits over 4 innings while reliever Zak Pickl gave up 7 runs on 7 hits during his 3-inning mound stint.

Marinette started early and never let up while socking out a season high 13 hits.

In the opening inning, leadoff hitter Derek Klegin reached on an error and strolled home as Bailey Brix blasted a two-run homer to right field. Aaron Benson was hit by a pitch and came around with the third run on a two-out single off the bat of Blake Margis.

Peshtigo scored single runs in the first and second frames to stay within striking distance. Jacob Bloch walked and scored on a single by Marcus Sharkey in the opening frame while Borkovec singled and crossed the plate on a hit by Derrek Maye.

Klegin launched a long two-out solo homer in the second inning while Benson walked and scored on a ground out from Blake Miller in the third for a 5-2 Marinette lead.

Marinette tacked on three runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.

Two walks, an error and single by Alex Nemetz resulted in three runs in the fifth for an 8-2 cushion.

In the sixth inning, winning pitcher Jake Sawinski, Kiefer Powers and Austin Wright (2 RBIs) cracked singles for an 11-2 spread.

Three more Marinette runners headed home in the 7th as Klegin walked, Brix and Sawinski lashed singles, Margis walked and Miller added a RBI hit.

Sawinski, who pitched for Crivitz this past spring, scattered 3 hits and 2 runs over 5 innings while fanning 8 and walking two. Kevin Konyn added 4 more strikeouts during two innings of scoreless relief work.
