Peshtigo Rallies Past White Lake

Issue Date: July 10, 2014

Despite a slow start, the Peshtigo Legion gang used a strong finish to rally past visiting White Lake Monday afternoon 6-5. Peshtigo fell behind 5-0 after 1 1/2 innings before pulling out the thrilling North Division win.

That was the lone good news of the week for Peshtigo, which fell to BayPort 17-U Wednesday 9-1 and had a Tuesday clash at Menominee get rained out.

Now 5-5 on the season and 5-3 in the North Division, coach Marty Zeske will send his troops to Antigo Wednesday for a 7pm clash before hosting DePere 17-U Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 11am.

Wiltzius-Coached

BayPort Dominates

Peshtigo Gang 9-1

Former Peshtigo Legion player and current teacher/coach at BayPort, Jesse Wiltzius, directed his team to a 9-1 non-league win Wednesday. Perviously Wiltzius pitched and played in Peshtigo for over a decade during his high school and Legion career.

Coaching the BayPort 17-U squad, Wiltzius saw his troops turn a 1-0 lead into an 8-zip cushion in the fourth inning on their way to the 9-1 win.

It is always nice to come back home and see familiar faces, Wiltzius said. The team I am coaching will be our juniors and seniors on next year’s high school team. We have some players that got on the field for the state run this year and all we are trying to do is get as many games as possible for them during the summer.

Peshtigo starter Jordan Berth kept BayPort under wraps for 3 frames, allowing one run before the floodgates opened in the fourth. In the 8-run uprising, BayPort used two-run singles by Conner Sullivan and winning pitcher Bryce Braspmnickx, RBI single off the bat of Mark Caren and a sac fly from Andrew Woeslaw.

Peshtigo tallied its lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Jacob Bloch drew a leadoff walk only to get erased at second base on a fielder’s choice groundout by Berth. A wild throw on the return peg to first allowed Berth to motor to second. He didn’t stay put very long as Darius Dohl dropped in a RBI single to left for an 8-1 deficit.

BayPort pushed across its final run in the sixth inning when Kyle Heinzem and Woeslaw singled followed by an run scoring groundout.

Berth fanned 4 and walked one during 4 innings of work while reliever Zak Pickl was nicked for one run over the final 3 frames.

BayPort starter Braspmnickx earned the mound win with 4 innings of one run and 3 hit ball with relief help from Wickman and Albrecht.

Late Rally Keys 6-5

Win Over White Lake

In a home clash with White Lake Monday, Peshtigo overcame a 5-0 second inning deficit to claim a thrilling 6-5 victory. Peshtigo starter Zak Pickl struggled early, yielding 5 runs on 6 hits as White Lake scored twice in the first frame and 3 more runs in the second.

Down but certainly not out, Peshtigo responded with solo runs in the second and third innings and a huge 4-run outburst in the sixth.

Jordan Berth blooped a one-out single to right in the second frame and scored on a run scoring double to left center off the bat of Zach Neumann.

Trevor Bero singled with one out in the third inning, stole second and scored on a single by Darius Dohl.

Facing a 3-run deficit heading into the sixth, the rally caps went on as Peshtigo sent 8 batters to the plate while scoring 4 runs on six hits. Bero and Derrek Maye got things rolling with singles, Trey Shepherd added a slow roller to third advancing the runners one base each.

Up stepped cleanup swinger Marcus Sharkey, who belted a booming two-run triple for a 5-4 deficit. After Justin Couillard whiffed for the second out, Austin Marquardt and Casey Bruso singled for a 5-5 deadlock. With two outs and brother Austin standing on third base, Tyler Marquardt ripped a shot which handcuffed White Lake third sacker Jon Smitts and then beat the throw to first for a 6-5 Peshtigo lead.

Trying to protect the upper hand, Peshtigo reliever Matt Borkovec had to survive a couple of hectic moments in the 7th. White Lake put runners at second and third with one out when Brad Kobesek dribbled a grounder in front of the plate. With Kyle Wegner trying to score from third, a diving Borkovec scooped up the ball and fired to catcher Sharkey, who snagged the low throw for the tag out at the plate.

With two outs, White Lake still didn’t quit. A single by Beau Bostus and walk to losing pitcher Jeremy Norris loaded the bases. No problem as Borkovec whiffed Matt Bowman to end the game.

The team had a great comeback, Peshtigo coach Zeske said. We started out slow, but managed to hang in there. Matt Borkovec did a nice job in relief and we got some huge hits at the end.

Borkovec hurled 4 scoreless innings of 4-hit ball, finishing with 3 strikeouts and a walk.

White Lake pitcher Norris had the Peshtigo batters off-balanced and over anxious with his slow pitches as 10 of the 18 outs came via pop ups.
