Doris M. (Ekholm) Gustafson, 91, of Escanaba, passed away Monday, Aug. 4 in Peshtigo.
Born Aug. 5, 1922 in Washburn, to Enok and Edith (Wickstrom) Ekholm, she graduated from high school and then from Stout College (now Stout State University) in Menomonie, Wi. with a teaching degree. She was a Home Economics Teacher for 32 years, teaching at Gladstone Public Schools for four years and then at Escanaba Jr. High School for 28 years, until her retirement.
She married Elmer Swanson in 1948 and he preceded her in death. She then married Jack Kivela and he preceded her in death in 1991. In 1997, she married Rudy Gustafson and he preceded her in death in 2004. She lived in Escanaba from 1948 until 2012 when she moved to Peshtigo to be closer to family.
A charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, she was also a member of the Escanaba Elks Club and the Escanaba Country Club, where she was the first women elected to the Board of Directors. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, sewing, needlework, quilting and having lunch with friends.
She is survived by four sisters, Amy Adams, of Rhinelander, Leone Edquist, of Marinette, Shirley Ericksen, of Ashland and Lois Carr, of Naples, Fla.; a brother, Harley (Jackie) Ekholm, of Port St. Lucie West, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three husbands.
Visitation was held Monday, Aug. 11 at Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba from noon until time of funeral services at 2:30 p.m. in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Chris Johnson and Rev. Scott Ehle officiated with burial in Lakeview Cemetery. A luncheon was served at Christ the King Lutheran Church after burial.
